It's a really unfitting joke weapon for something that only listeners of one language might get, when there's plenty of other places they could do an Actor Allusion for if they wanted to, and actors are temporary.

I don't think they've yet done an Actor Allusion in this series.

So basically, that's not simple. Consider, no one here had any idea what you were talking about, and if they did, they didn't say it.

Honestly, it'd make more sense if Siegfried received something like the Giant's Knife or Broken Goron's Sword (although that'd be difficult without Nintendo's involvement/approval). At least then, even if the shared seiyuu joke flies over people's heads, 1) the weapon still fits Siegfried's style and 2) players would likely interpret it as a nod to Link (similar to how Talim having ocarinas as a joke weapon in IV was seen as a shout out to the Link/Talim pairing that originated in II).

[up] Then how did Nintendo approve of Talim getting Ocarinas in the first place then?

Nintendo doesn't own ocarinas any more than they own flutes or clarinets.

Basically, that. They probably could've inserted the Fairy Ocarina or Ocarina of Time into the game as a Lawyer-Friendly Cameo, but a normal ocarina is no more exclusive to Nintendo than anyone else.

I'm trying to picture Nintendo trying to do something of that effect right now.

Anyway, is Soul Calibur 5 worth getting? I saw it going cheap in a second-hand shop.

I think it is. The story is kinda eh, but the gameplay is really fun.

We already knew about that.

From the info, Lost Swords is to V what Tekken Revolution is to Tag 2. We might see characters not in V, but I expect the V guys to get first dibs.

In other words, if Sophitia is in it at all, she won't be with the initial cast list.

[up][up]I actually mean about Sophitia being in the game; I found out about this F2P Soul Calibur from this very thread. smile

And me, I expect Sophitia to be in the 'opening' roster, as their means of trying to goad long-time fans into playing Lost Swords. tongue Judging by that trailer, it looks like she's getting several new moves - probably to differentiate her from Pyrrha Omega.

Now I'm wondering about the specifics of this game. Will there be CAS, or are they relegated to 'random' opponents in Arcade mode or whatever? Will it be able to play against SC5 owners (which would mean that SC5 would need an update to add the stat-based stuff, which is unlikely at this point)? That mention of 'single-player, mission-based campaigns' makes it sound like this is going to be classic Chronicles mode, just entirely separate from the 'core' version.

Oh, sorry. I didn't know that Sophitia actually was in the trailer, due to it being too laggy for me to view initially, and the article making no mention of her whatsoever, despite previous news just saying that only Siegfried and Mitsurugi were confirmed. You'd think that more characters being confirmed would be news worthy, but apparently not.

Also, I didn't notice her using any new moves, but then again, Soul Calibur isn't really the type of game where you'd notice those kinds of alterations to a character's moveset from trailers and such unless they are radically different.

Also, why is the enemy fighter in every fight a custom fighter with Nightmare's style?

The enemy fighters are what's making me wonder if there'll be CAS. Tekken Revolution is pretty bare-bones, so I'd be surprised and amazed if they decided to include it here, too.

As for Sophitia... some of the moves I don't recognize are that Brave Edge-looking launcher and the aerial shockwave followup, along with that last move that looks like her Critical Edge (which looks kind of like Patroklos').

@ Hellman: For story purposes, not at all. SCV is definitely one of the better games in terms of gameplay mechanics (though you're bound to see a lot of ridiculousness at higher levels of play from almost every character out there). It's hard to beat out III and II in my books, but V comes close.

@ wander: It's the same VA for Sophitia that she's had for a while now (dating back to at least III, if not II), who also happens to be the VA for Elysium. Sounds like they ripped her quotes straight from IV.

My guess is that Project Soul is trying to do damage control by including Sophitia since fans (well, the ones who were more concerned about the story as opposed to the gameplay) didn't react well to the news/nature of her death or her children replacing her in V. Of course, this is all rendered moot if Lost Swords ends up non-canon (and there's a 95% chance it will) since she'd still be, y'know, dead.

It looks like her basic style is unchanged, so, given the moveset streamlining in V, Project Soul probably used Elysium's Pyrrha Omega move listing (which was pretty darn close to Sophitia anyway) as the basis for Sophitia here.

I honestly can't tell if any of the moves we saw were her Critical Edge. They all looked like Brave Edges to me (and one of them has the properties of Elysium's Eleusian Initiation), but done in slow-mo?

And for the love of Algol, can we get those extra costumes for Siegfried, Nightmare, and Cervantes from Legendary Souls in this game? If Siegfried's going to be stripped of most his tools, can I least have an outfit symbolizing my fond memories of the good old days?

Yeah, I did find it kinda strange that they have the models for SCIV Nightmare and Sieg, Soul Edge!Cervantes, and models and data for their weapons...and it's Legendary Souls enemy only. Jeebus.

I might be in the unpopular opinion here, but I kinda don't want them to retcon Sophitia's death, in part because I actually kinda like Pyrrha and Pat's stories (in concept; the execution is a bit iffy) and Sophitia being alive basically completely derails things for both of them.

Also, I honestly can't see what else they could have her do after IV. Her story in IV does seem like what events in II and III were leading up to, and either she fails and dies as in canon, or succeeds and retires. Either way, she is out.

...and this has been "OA says something most folks won't agree with theater".

Patrick is a gormless douche, and Pyrrha is a stereotypically useless DID. That established, I do not find it completely inconceivable that their story could have been executed in a less hateable way.

[up][up] Wait were you saying that 8 way run cared more about the story than the gameplay or the other way around?

Only way they're gonna make me put time in this game is if it is a Story Mode F 2 P game with all of the leftover assets from SCV they couldn't include. I like Patrokolos he just got insufferable post switching styles and became too goodie goodie for me.

I wouldn't have minded one of those two options, but I'd have preferred a success and retirement, and her actually working alonside people who could help her (Cassandra and Taki), and maybe even Setsuka coming in.

But her kids suck.

Also, I wouldn't like a 17 year time skip. It only seems to be there to make those two matter.

Because those are the only two the story we got focuses on. The profiles and such implies that everyone except probably Voldo and Ivy got their stories moved forward to new material thanks to the time skip.

...We just only get glimpses of it.

But most of them don't really seem like 17 years worth of new material, from what I've heard. Or in the case of Kilik and Xianghua, I don't like their kids anyway.

Idk most of the Plots and Profiles in SCV are basically (and almost purposefully) skimming over details concerning older characters which didn't happen in previous Soul Calibur games.

That said I don't have any ill will for the Alexandria Siblings. I actually like all of the new characters introduced in SCV...then again I don't mind full rosters being switched out with brand new characters so I may be alone in that.

@ Other: I'm not saying they should retcon Sophitia's death (though they should definitely get Cassandra out of Astral Chaos because honestly, what's up with that?). At this point, there's nothing we can do about that and having Sophitia still be alive would basically derail SCV's "plot" (although there's a lot of people out there who say the next game should just disregard the Time Skip, pick up from where IV left off, and go in a completely opposite direction). All I'm pointing out is that, while it's nice to see Sophie again, it's going to mean squat in the next canonical game.

@ Knowless: Basically. I'm assume only having a 1/4 of a story is a big part of the problem, but Pat is a badly-written character in a badly-written plot that relies heavily on half-baked "explanations" to justify why he's the main character.

@ Mike: Other way around, and sometimes notoriously so. There are times when it seems like they can't grasp that a sizable amount of the fanbase (if not a plurality) plays the games for the plot as well as the gameplay (or just for the plot, since the Soul series was an example of a deep fighting game with an actual, well-done story). For example, while I don't entirely agree with this post, the guy brings up some good points about why SCV was an example of poor storytelling. Most of the responses to his post were rather condescending.
