@Hungry Joe: The adserver is telling me to date guys and women. Well, at least it got my orientation right, I guess.

I do like Lady Gaga, but "Born This Way" seemed less like a song and more like shameless pandering to me -_-

IS THERE NOBODY IN THIS WORLD FOR ME, AD-SERVER?

@Malk:Billy Joel is a thousand times better and you know it. Sir Elton is a distant second.

Given the choice I'd probably take Joel. I mean, Elton John didn't make Scenes From An Italian Restaurant.

Elton John is a pretty fabulous fellow, but he's still masculine. He'd be a much better rallying point.

Yeah, "fabulous" doesn't always mean "unmanculine". Seems a lot of people miss the memo on that one :/

WTF.

Anyway, on topic, yeah I also find it wrong. Even worse than the usual stereoripes.

Ironically, I dislike Lady gaga and Born this Way is my favourite song by her. It's purely musically, I don't give a fuck for her lyrics.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. They did not just appear out of nowhere.

There are black people with afros.

There are black people who speak in jive.

There are black people with big lips.

There are black people who play basketball.

There are black people who are "sassy."

There are black people with heavy set curves.

There are black people who are very, very tall.

Those are all traits that are "stereotypes" of a black person. More or less. Now, I can say with confidence that I have met each and every stereotype, at least once in my life.

HOWEVER, that does not mean that every black person is a jive speaking, afro wearing, sassy acting, basketball playing person.

And that is the difference.

Yes, there might be gays that do speak effeminately. It's a stereotype, but that doesn't make it completely untrue. What makes it untrue is when you automatically put it together with EVERY OTHER stereotype in the WORLD.

Everyone is a litle stereotypical and every stereotype is a little bit true, otherwise the stereotype wouldn't BE a stereotype to begin with.*

The key is to separate traits from associated traits, and not assume until proven.

I'm with AHR here. In my opinion, stereotypes are averages; traits one can reasonably expect to see in a group of people associated stereotypes. That doesn't mean ALL of said people have one of those traits; hell there are black people who don't fit any of the black stereotypes.

I think the gay stereotyping began after they started to become more visible.

I dunno, I'm not really qualified to talk about social issues.

I wonder how many gay people actually fit the stereotypes compared to those who don't.

Meo— There are enough stereotypes that they probably fit one or the other. I've tried writing unstereotypical females for a long enough time to know that it is near impossible to escape complete stereotype.

I have a couple gay uncles who don't fit any of the stereotypes. One of them has a softer voice, but not the stereotypical gay voice.

And those guys are some of the coolest people I've met. I'd wager a lot of gay people don't fit the stereotype.

The adserver - and not just the TV Tropes adserver, but seemingly every adserver on the entire Internet - has been trying to get me to date single moms for several months. It was when ads for single dads showed up that it got creepy.

I find it odd when adjectives like 'gay' are used as plural nouns.

Does anyone go around saying "I'm a gay"?

@ OP

"are you really surprised? Didn't his collection of Hummel figurines clue you in?"
Yeaaah..

"..Otherwise, they're just trying to act cool!" -

I hardly ever even hear of people actually predicting this kind of thing in the absence of pretty suggestive evidence (which, to be fair, conforming to the stereotype to a large extent would be.) So although this kind of thing is definitely happening, it may not mean what you think it means.

I kind of agree with Counterclock[7] .. it gets more acceptable, then it's cool to have 'known it all along'. Not really, but people do seem to derive some satisfaction from that supposed superior state of knowledge.

@ Ukonkivi:

Funny thing is, we Bisexuals don't seem to get too many gender role stereotypes, like being butch or effeminate. Just that we're universally incredibly slutty.

Think that's an awareness thing too? People in general don't seem to take bi-ness seriously, like, we*

don't really exist. I think it's fair to say, just like it used to be for gay people, bisexuals don't exist as persons to many people (possibly a majority) — they aren't familiar with any bi people, so what else do they have than media portrayals to estimate from? It's kind of like the difference between a 2.5d cutout (gay) and a flat one (bi) :/

I get the feeling that a lot of gay men do this because think it is what they're supposed to do. "Oh, I'm attracted to men. This is what the men who are attracted to men on TV act like. This is what I should act like as well."
This! definitely. Stereotypes reinforce themselves — if you want to be recognizable as an X, conform to the stereotype of X. I've certainly considered doing that myself * .

(also, how did I not notice this was a snowclone?)
