Might want to put a warning for that picture.

But yeah, this is pretty awesome.

The first thing Wiens could smell was lasagna at the hospital, which smelled "delicious," he said. And he remembers smelling hibiscus and other flowers brought into his room.

[awesome]

Added warning of sorts (I don't think it qualifies as NSFW, so not that kind of warning).

Heh, I wouldn't call it either NSFW or squicky, but the Nightmare Face trope exists for a reason.

I don't know how PC it is to say that he looked like the Pale Man in the before pic? In any case the after pic is amazing.

Awesome. Looking at the first pic alone, I honestly wouldn't have thought it possible to get him to the second pic.

[up][up]Nah, he looks more like The Question.

[up]I agree. It's a miracle of modern science that he even survived.

Wow, the first pic ._. If it wasn't a real pic, I'd call it awesomely creepy, but since its real, I feel horrible for the guy =/ Anyway, awesome that it worked.

I had a Face/Off joke ready, but I don't have the heart to make it in light of the amazing recovery. Good on him smile

Though I do wonder what kind of donor procedures go on. I mean, is this live donation?

I seriously doubt it. They're taking the skin and muscle. A live donation would leave the donor in worse shape than the recipient was.

So I'm guessing he'll still be blind though?

^ Currently yes, but they've already done experiments that give some form of sight to blind people. Can't find a link atm though, argh. From what I remember it involved hooking up sensors or a camera or something directly to the brain.

Oh, here.

In 2002, Jens Naumann, also blinded in adulthood, became the first in a series of 16 paying patients to receive Dobelle’s second generation implant, marking one of the earliest commercial uses of BC Is. The second generation device used a more sophisticated implant enabling better mapping of phosphenes into coherent vision. Phosphenes are spread out across the visual field in what researchers call the starry-night effect. Immediately after his implant, Jens was able to use his imperfectly restored vision to drive slowly around the parking area of the research institute.

Article said he's still blind. (One of his eyes was completely gone, and the other won't work anymore.)

It's interesting how his new face doesn't look exactly like the person who donated it, or exactly like him. Someone else's skin and muscles on his bone structure makes an entirely unique face smile

Be not afraid...

Another case.

Protip: chimpanzees do not make good pets.

Still good that she got it fixed, though.

Wasn't that all over the news last year? Like, she put little dresses on the chimp and everything, but it was still a wild animal.

It was her friend who owned the chimp.

The chimp was also supposedly on medication for depression or something. Medication intended for humans. Dunno if that had a role in things.

Anyway, yikes. I did hear about that last year but I wasn't aware of the extent of damage chimps are capable of. Wow.
