Villains who are "misunderstood", misguided, possibly an Ends Justify The Means / Well-Intentioned Extremist, or flat out have a horrible past that almost justifies their cruel etc behavior. Someone that, at the end of the day, invokes more pity than hatred. Usually ends in their inevitable death, for either they can't be saved (from themselves?) or perhaps as an act of redemption once realization sinks in. Sometimes the realization will sink in as they're dying.

I know there are tropes of these things by themselves, but is there a trope that perhaps encompasses this kind of person/villainous genre?

I apologize in advance if there is an easier way to locate tropes besides blindly searching pages I think it might be listed.

Look on the Villains index to start.
