This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
More specifically, read this post
for some guidance on what we don't want to see.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom
. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers
.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

only difference is the public will side with the strikers, this is nothing like the miners strikes, The Winter of Discontent had came before and turned a lot of people off the unions, right now all they see are the doctors being abused by a Tory government looking to dismantle the NHS piece by piece
advancing the front into TV TropesI've been seeing in the news that today the Hillsborough inquest has concluded that the disaster there 27 years ago was definitively caused by poor design of the stadium and by failures on the part of police and ambulance services. Wonder what this will mean for, say, re-litigation.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt was found by a jury that they were unwalfully killed, meaning it's possible that the folks responsible could be charged with something, be it manslaughter or something else.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat seems to be more chonic stupidity and anti-Israel sentiment then anti-semitism, the posts seem to have been about Israel, not Jewish people. I mean it's still an asshole thing that acts as if the Israeli people have no right to self determination.
It being mainly anti-Israel is not to say that it's not incredibly stupid and that the party shouldn't have someone who checks parliamentary candidates social media history for stupid ass comments, but I'm seeing more bone headed stupidity/disregard for self determination then anti-semitism.

Hunt said:
Does he mean history will judge him the same way it's judged him over the comments
he made in 2010 that linked the Hillsborough tragedy to hooliganism?
I'm quite sure history will indeed remember Hunt. I'm just not sure the reality is going to be quite the same as the little fantasy he's got playing inside his head.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Well BBC breaking news just said she's been suspended from the party for the comments, because duh, they were pretty fucked up comments.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think it's also running into the social media generation problem, it's got a fair number of folks who were active on social media before going into politics starting to come out he ranks, many of them them have said stupid thinks that previously would have just been said at a private event and never known about.
Though again I stand that while the statements were clearly outrageous, stupid and anti-Israel they don't seem to have been specifically anti-Semitic. Though when you're throwing away the right of a people to choose their own fate doing it based on nationality instead of ethnio-religious grouping seems a pointless distinction.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBecause someone who believes that kind of thing is not wanted in the party, now she might have reformed but generally we're pretty careful about letting former bigots become M Ps, plus she only apologised when caught. It's not bolting an empty stable so much as going "shit we had no idea".
Speaking of all this, Red Ken Livingston has also been suspended after defending her.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranNot Ken's first brush with antisemitism allegations by a long way.
In 2005
I had to tell a customer that my company didn't allow me to make political comments.

Ken's statement for the curious.
I'm just gonna go ahead and bang my head against a wall for a bit.

I think Ken went a long time ago.
Winter 04/05 a journalist who Ken was annoyed with mentioned that he was a part of the local Jewish community to which Ken replied "No you're not, you're a concentration camp guard"
Never mind being slapped by a minder, he needs Bob
A "journalist" is going a bit far, he said that to someone who worked for the Mail, one of if not the most racist, anti-Semitic and bigoted papers in the country. I think his comparison was off but I can understand being confused at a Jewish person works for a paper that supported Hitler (and has continued to thsi day to express views in line with that past support for Hitler).

It wasn't the Mail, it was the Evening Standard — although, at the time, both were part of the same group (Associated Newspapers
), and the journalist was Andrew Gilligan
, the journalist who had previously coined the term "sexed up (dossier)".

Keep Rolling On

Guardian Op-Ed: Jeremy Hunt could have stopped this doctors’ strike. But he wanted it.
