This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
More specifically, read this post
for some guidance on what we don't want to see.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom
. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers
.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Posting the entire text of the King's Speech - even in a folder - isn't really following the forum rules

The British government delays the wine cellar report for the fourth time
This is the official Foreign Office wine cellar for "guests of the government, from home and overseas", so it shouldn't have been getting much use during the Covid lockdowns and restrictions.
The lack of any transparency on this is stirring up some cynicism on that, though.
The current workaround for GFA compliance is that the U.K. does not run border checks on good at the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it instead runs the checks at the border between Northern Ireland and mainland Great Britain.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMan, ten years ago if you'd have asked me if I thought the House of Lords was an undemocratic institution that should be dismantled, I'd have said yes.
But now?
Over the last eight years its felt like the House of Lords is one of the few bastions of relative sanity in British politics.
What a sorry state of affairs.
HMTK was admitted to the hospital for an enlarged prostate.
Lawrence Fox, founder of the Reclaim party, has lost a libel claim involving two men he called paedophiles.
He made certain comments about Black History Month, for which he was widely criticised him online. He responded by lashing out at two of his critics and calling them paedophiles.

King Charles has cancer says Buckingham Palace, no form specified.
Damn. He is 75, and human, but I think most of us figured we'd be seeing him for 15 years or more. No guarantee it's serious/fatal of course, but he's not exactly young so there's presumably only so much his body can do to fend it off and that extensive invasive treatment could do without causing severe harm.
Obviously it's not time yet for doommongering, but the possibility exists at least that this could be a short reign.
All I can say is a cancer diagnoses is obviously no fun at all whoever you are. That said as King, Charles has quick access to expert medical care and options that most people don't get so while I'm sympathetic I'm not that sympathetic.
Good on him for continuing what duties he can. I don't envy him having to talk to Tory P Ms every week.

The Palace have also said that he made the decision to go public specifically to raise awareness of the need for men to get their prostate checked. Using one’s own illness to engage in public service is commendable.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's prostate cancer, apparently, and the news says he's already feeling better.
Also, people who get cancer deserve sympathy no matter who they are. I don't do class warfare, certainly not over someone's health.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesIt's specifically not prostate cancer - that's the one thing that was confirmed.
"Although Buckingham Palace has not revealed what form of cancer the king has been diagnosed with, it is understood not to be prostate cancer."
As he was in hospital for a prostate issue, they wanted to confirm it wasn't that (although it was identified while he was there)
