This thread exists to discuss British politics.

Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.

More specifically, read this post for some guidance on what we don't want to see.

    Original OP
(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Confirms that, yes, veto power over devolved legislation that would impact application of non-devolved legislation works?

Another step towards reversing devolution. The Tories have never liked us ruling ourselves, there was always going to be some sort of precedent set to start rolling back the powers they begrudgingly gave us.

Pretty sure the Tories weren't involved in giving anyone anything, unless I've completely forgotten timelines.

Yeah, Labour are the ones who bought in devolution, Heath refused the recommendations of Wilson’s Royal Commission, the 1978 Scotland Act was passed by Labour under Callaghan, the 1998 Scotland Act was passed under Blair and established the Scottish Parliament.

Like with most things, Scottish autonomy has been in damage control mode since 2010.

In Wales, the Tory Party has a permanent manifesto pledge that if they ever get into power, they will remove Welsh devolution completely. They never advertise this point in elections, but it's always present in their manifesto promises when you read them.

Gotta wonder why it's in the manifesto instead of being a secret agreement among the party elites. After all, once devolution is reversed, they don't have to campaign again.

Does the Welsh government even have the authority to remove devolution? The Welsh government was established by the Government of Wales Act 1998, which was passed by Westminster.

That's a very weird case of saying the quiet part out loud too.

[up][up][up][up] because if it's in the manifesto and you win you can say you have a mandate and it's the will of the people to do it.

Even if it isn't.

Very few people actually read manifestos, so it’s still said very quietly.

The reason things get put in manifestos nationally is that the House of Lords won’t block a law if it was part of the winning party’s manifesto, so you can dodge a long drawn out fight if you put it in your manifesto. No idea what the logic would be for an assembly election manifesto. Maybe it protests against intervention from Westminster?

As for why they want to do it, most of the Conservative vote in Wales isn’t Welsh from my understanding. It’s people who identity as English but live in Wales.

To clarify, it has passed the 2nd reading in the Commons. It still needs to pass a 3rd reading and then it would need to go to the House of Lords and get through there.

Ex-tory peer Michelle Mone seems to be intent on making the Tories' week worse.

After the unsurprising revelation that, yes, she did profit from Covid and the supply of dodgy PPE via the VIP lane.

  • She admitted that she lied to the press (and got lawyers to lie to the press on her behalf), but said "that's not illegal".
  • After Sunak criticised her, she said that she had never lied to the government and they'd known this all along. Which implies they remained silent knowing she was lying to everyone else.
  • She's also blaming Michael Gove and others for buying more from her company than they really needed.

She is, reportedly, under investigation for several related crimes: allegations of conspiracy to defraud, fraud by false representation, and bribery.

Sky News are now reporting that she’s no longer a member of the Conservative Party, presumably having been expelled.

Peter Bone, a member of Parliament for two decades, was removed because of allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct against a staff member.

Now a by-election must be held, this is the seventh one since July that the conservative party has had to hold, and the party lost five of the previous six.

So it seems that the Daily Express is angry that Brexit means Brexit and that we won't get to be included in an EU transport network plan after we left the EU.

Not sure why I am surprised at Brexiteers getting angry at getting exactly what they knew they were voting for.

"Yup. That tasted purple."
