This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
More specifically, read this post
for some guidance on what we don't want to see.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom
. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers
.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Yeah, Labour are the ones who bought in devolution, Heath refused the recommendations of Wilson’s Royal Commission, the 1978 Scotland Act was passed by Labour under Callaghan, the 1998 Scotland Act was passed under Blair and established the Scottish Parliament.
Like with most things, Scottish autonomy has been in damage control mode since 2010.

Another step towards reversing devolution. The Tories have never liked us ruling ourselves, there was always going to be some sort of precedent set to start rolling back the powers they begrudgingly gave us.
In Wales, the Tory Party has a permanent manifesto pledge that if they ever get into power, they will remove Welsh devolution completely. They never advertise this point in elections, but it's always present in their manifesto promises when you read them.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Does the Welsh government even have the authority to remove devolution? The Welsh government was established by the Government of Wales Act 1998, which was passed by Westminster.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranVery few people actually read manifestos, so it’s still said very quietly.
The reason things get put in manifestos nationally is that the House of Lords won’t block a law if it was part of the winning party’s manifesto, so you can dodge a long drawn out fight if you put it in your manifesto. No idea what the logic would be for an assembly election manifesto. Maybe it protests against intervention from Westminster?
As for why they want to do it, most of the Conservative vote in Wales isn’t Welsh from my understanding. It’s people who identity as English but live in Wales.

Duke of Sussex -v- Mirror Group Newspapers Limited (the case about phone hacking): Mr Justice Fancourt rules in favour of the duke, awarding him £140,600 in damages.[1]
Ex-tory peer Michelle Mone seems to be intent on making the Tories' week worse.
After the unsurprising revelation that, yes, she did profit from Covid and the supply of dodgy PPE via the VIP lane.
- She admitted that she lied to the press (and got lawyers to lie to the press on her behalf), but said "that's not illegal".
- After Sunak criticised her, she said that she had never lied to the government and they'd known this all along. Which implies they remained silent knowing she was lying to everyone else.
- She's also blaming Michael Gove and others for buying more from her company than they really needed.
She is, reportedly, under investigation for several related crimes
: allegations of conspiracy to defraud, fraud by false representation, and bribery.
Currently the Parliament website still shows her as a Conservative.[1]

Peter Bone, a member of Parliament for two decades, was removed because of allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct against a staff member.
Now a by-election must be held, this is the seventh one since July that the conservative party has had to hold, and the party lost five of the previous six.

"Yup. That tasted purple."

Confirms that, yes, veto power over devolved legislation that would impact application of non-devolved legislation works?
