Clinton was far from perfect, but "handled them poorly" is not an excuse to rant "people I know were affected by the cuts." If we avoid decisions that affect us personally, nothing will ever get done.

(And I'm still advocating cuts in the Defense budget even though there's a very good chance I will be directly affected by them. I put my money where my mouth is.)

I feel cutting several R&D projects and expensive refits is a better way to cut than firing people. But that's something for another thread I suppose.

Stewart thinks we should have shown the images, although his point is a good one.

We should have been seeing images of the war like Aljazeera did, then maybe Americans would have seen the war for the ugly shit it really was and not some fucking Call of Duty game.

I can't deny that.

Still think the choice was a good one, let people get upset, there'd be more damage done if it spread. (Although he did offer the idea of letting famous journalists get a look at the picture)

Stewart said it was a good idea not to show the images, because no evidence in the world would convince conspiracy theorists.

That's what always bugged me about the media, we can go watch Saw, or Hostel and see somebody get hacked to death, but looking at a pic of the aftermath of 5.56 to the head is graphic and bloody.

It's not just that it's gory, but that it's potentially inflammatory.

No, but it could jump Muslim Hate from level 60 to level 80 just like that.

Real violence is also alot more disturbing than movie violence.

Watching a movie or a game, your brain KNOWS its fake. Watching the real thing however...

Its like that video of that cop being killed by a crazy ex vietnam vet. I actually got sick watching that.

Reuters has a few graphic photos of two (three?) of the other guys killed in the gunfight, for those who need to satisfy their bloodlust. They apparently bought them from a local Pakistani who arrived after the SEALs left and snapped 'em.

For that to be a valid criticism, you have to prove that the demographic that approves of those films and disproves of this is the same.

For what it's worth, I think Saw and Hostel are dumb. Much like this.

"These are graphic photographs of someone who was shot in the head. It is not in our national security interest to allow those images…to become icons to rally opinion against the United States," said White House Spokesman Jay Carney at a press conference Wednesday.

Carney said that the president does not want the photos used as propaganda or as a trophy of America's success at capturing and killing the al Qaeda mastermind.

Source

I think these are more of the reason than the fact that they are graphic.

I have to agree with Thom Hartmann here when he says this is one of the key things that differentiates Barack Obama from George W. Bush — Obama is a statesman who doesn't revel in brutality and doesn't celebrate bloodlust. It's a marked contrast to Bush's macho posturing and cavalier attitude towards killing (check out Bush's track record on the Texas death penalty sometime).

As President Obama said, "it's not who we are."

So, according to the news, Osama planned to bomb trains in the US on 9/11's ten year anniversary.

Yeah, you know what?

It's ok, neither are Californians.

California and New York suck ass, they are my two least favorite states.

But if I had to choose, at least California has nice weather. Why would I go someplace that has shitty frigid weather and a batshit insane legislature that hates guns even more than Cali?

And we're not much of a target for terrorist attacks. Because of the earthquakes we build horizontally, not vertically.

Not to give the bad guys any ideas, but an attack on the Long Beach harbor could do massive damage to the nation's economy.

And attacking the rails is a fairly obvious idea; look at the subway bombings in Europe for examples. A 10th anniversary attack is also rather obvious...
