Does anybody need that many avatars? No.
But does it matter? Unless they start taking up too much space, no.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderI really meant more of N Os with reasoning behind them. But points for the unexpected.
But really, unless they're really taking up a lot of space, there's no point in a limit.
But some people have nearly 1000 (possibly more — the highest I've seen is 936) of the things. Surely those galleries take up some space.
Infinite Tree: an experimental storyStorage isn't where the cost comes in. Bandwidth to serve them up is where the cost comes. That's the reason for the crackdown on posting bunches of them in an individual post — they have to be served up each time the page containing that post is opened by anyone.
And not all avvies are 20K, either. 20 K is the maximum. I have 16 in my gallery: 2 are near 20. 1 is almost 15. 2 are about 5K. All the rest are between 1K and 3K in size.
Personally, I don't see the point in having 1000 different avatars — let's face it, that means if you changed your avatar every day it would take 2 years and 9 months to use each one once. Seems kind of pointless.

if it isn't causing an issue there's no reason to impose a limit.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I agree that 1000+ avatars is excessive, but I don't think we really need to impose a limit unless it's actually causing problems. Even if it is a problem, it's pretty freaking low on the priority list.
Reaction Image RepositoryYeah, I think if somebody wanted to attack tvtropes, there would be more effective ways of doing so.
Reaction Image Repository

This is something that I have noticed after awhile. Normally avatar galleries range from 1-40 different avatars depending on the person, and they rarely get accessed. I can see this as reasonable. Then there comes people who collect 5 or more different avatars every day and upload them to TV Tropes, and continue doing this everyday. They don't really use them, but stockpile them into their Avatar galleries to never see use for extended amounts of time or to use in Avatar games or mini reaction images.
Does anybody REALLY need to have 700-1000 or more different avatars in their avatar galleries? Does anybody really need to upload that many on a regular basis? How much space to they take up anyway?
Perhaps there should be a limit to how many avatars one person can acquire, perhaps 200 or 300.
