"A flower will bloom over Hell."

NOTE: As Of 1/1/2013, Everything Here Is Subject To Drastic Change

Mythril Aces and Aeris Gaiden. The forum RP Gs set in the year 2099 AD. It sets two interstellar nations, the Earth Federation and the Centauri Confederacy aginst each other in a war over a cluster of habital planets rich in the fuel source "mythril" that powers everything from space ships to the giant robots that act as the primary weapon of the military. The two have been in an on and off conflict for the last 100 years actually but now it seems things may be winding down/ heating up when a secret conspiracy has been discovered that may have been prolonging the war...

That is what know. This thread for what we don't know, what we want clarified, what we would like to build upon, the history, the worlds, the figures of the galaxy of Mythril Aces. Here the players and anyone passing by can world build without clogging the discussion thread, so that can be saved for gameplay and story and Pokemon derails.

Alright;

Point of Divergance: 2100ish, a large project initiated by a religious group and supported by several governments launches a sleeper ship at Centauri.

I don't know if we ever settled on whether it was a sleepership or simply FTL with isolationist policies, I'm inclined to say the former and put off the year of actually discovering FTL until 2800s for the Cents and 2700s for the Feds.

They initially set up shop, but a plague [as well as what I would imagine was a massive lack of infrastructure to support a population that large in the first place] decimated and fragmented the population. This resulted in a few hundred years of gradually rebuilding technology and preserving information. This is the Centauri Dark Ages, which were finally emerged from under Eduard. [Canonically 2662]

The Cents likely lacked a great deal of productivity during these periods and based their culture more off of a recovery of technology and traditions than splitting off, but weird syncretism and anachronism results. Considering environmental conditions being completely different than Earth's, I imagine modern cultures look nothing like their ancient Terran equivalent, an Eden Gaul may look more like a 20th century Kenyan than a Frenchman, Terrans ironically have probably more accurately kept this distinction but suppressed it to the point where it became largely irrelevant to them.

Meanwhile:

Earth Federation seems somewhat similar in that it was formed in the wake of economic collapse [2515] and it seems that it suffered a few stagnant centuries. The Federation however seems slightly more culturally hegemonic, with small cultures existing more as a practicality than something encouraged and preserved [Compare Cent references to culture to those made by the Federation].

The Federation culture seems somewhat technocratic with the same sort of dogmatic progressivism that's sometimes attributed to communist nations; eliminating false distinctions such as race and creed to the best of their abilities.

First Contact War

It's been clearly established that the Federation refuses to recognize external sovereignty and so their first combat was likely over laser rounds.

I'd imagine the war of First contact probably took place only after both were fairly well established, probably only a hundred years ago. Possibly on the outskirts of the Centauri system proper, which would have ended in Centauri victory.

Frames were, considering the cultures, likely a Centauri technology originally granting them an advantage against the Federation which was equalled by Federation numbers and superior tactics.

War was mentioned as having been on and off for a century. I imagine that most mobilisations are largely skirmishes rather than total war focused on deposits of Mythril rather than annihilation; if they weren't than they would have finished each other long ago.

Competition and Syncretism:

The Federation have become more tolerant on religion, this is likely due to Centauri contact, while the Centauri have likely become a bit more secular due to it.

I imagine during the war of first contact technology was probably radically different and both have been playing catch up to each other for a decent bit.

Judging by Canon, I'd give the Cents the edge in Drone, Nano and Laser technology. While the Federation has an edge in Electromagneticism as a power source and generally rely more on mass-production and industry than fancy weapon technology [though their frames do tend to be more gimmicky].

Nukes&WM Ds:

Gundam did this with both sides Nuking each other to hell only to have the remaining sides shake hands and promise not to use them any more for fear of mutual annihilation. With Cents and Feds, I think one unfortunate planet being reduced to a smoldering crater might have forced the two sides to see eye to eye and do likewise.

Focus on the 21st Century:

Because of difficulties on both sides surviving, culture seems to have gotten rather sparse for a few hundred years. Ideas and cultures from the crash and dark ages still exist, they're just poorly recorded by all odds and more effort was put into recovery than actual production. This means that what was worth preserving was produced before the split for the Centauri and before the crash for the Federation and both have cultures which highly value it.

Then, further more, considering the split, the Federation and Centauri would probably look for an find most of their common ground before it. Anyone hoping to deal with the other side or bring them into a room together civilly would be to have them talk about before the whole thing happened, so most friendly cultural exchange has happened in those terms, further strengthening the classical and anachronistic elements of the cultures.

So the (early) 21st Centaury is the Enlightenment/ Renaissance/ Lost Golden Age for both sides?

Fauxlosophe Since: Aug, 2010

Lost Golden Era would be closest. Renaissance would be around 2700s for the Feds and 2600s for the Cents.

Enlightenment doesn't really have much of a sci-fi equivalent, since the Feds seem to have a very Enlightenment Era culture while the Cents have a Counter and Post-Enlightenment culture.

One major question, and you and me have already discussed is scale; how densely populated could these planets be? Some probably have an indigenous population who arrived much like the Cents nine hundred years ago, they could probably support billions. But assuming only the Feds and Cents have FTL and both only developed it a couple centuries ago, those initially claimed by by Fed and Cent settles couldn't number that high, maybe a billion, at most. Assuming people bred like rabbits or there was cloning afoot.

That would depend on how close these planets are to Earth and Eden, if any terraforming had to be done first and how long that took, and how many colonists chose to go.

Eden got a head start, being the first planet outside the Sol System to be colonized with a very large set of colonists and it didn't need to be terraformed. Even with all the break down in the early years, they had a big enough population to bounce back quickly.

Other worlds close to (Before FTL) and similar to the motherworlds probably grew faster. Less time to terraform and more colonist willing to go. Places like the Tallen System and Natsumi System were like this and just naturally grew fast from native birth and continuous immigration, Kinda like New York. Then you have places like Atlantica or Aeris, which for a variety of reasons aren't the most hospitible of places and attract far less colonists.

In short, the more Earthlike a planet is, and the longer it has had humans on it, the more likely it is to have a billion people, a mega planet, so to speak.

From the list I compiled earlier, the Centauri have Eden and four other mega planets (and by extension, those planets' star systems). I don't recall how it is with the Federation though I would presume with Earth and a terraformed Mars they have at least those two.

Don't forget that the Federation began as a pretty harshly autocratic government. They fought the war to retake the former colony worlds, and that sort've set the precedent for Federation actions in the next century or two... Hence their demands that the Centauri 'rejoin' the Federation. Of course, considering that the first leader's opinion of his planet was "Earth is a planet of ten billion hatreds, and only war and a common enemy can keep it from shattering" (paraphrased) he'd probably approve of this whole war.

And the Federation have several 'megaplanets', I just haven't gotten around to actually thinking about their star systems yet.

  • Earth and Sol: Earth, Mars, Venus and a few of the various moons are colonized to varying degrees, with the most populous being Earth and Venus with Mars behind by a slim margin. The moons of Jupiter and other planets are less popular due to their extremely high radiation levels, which is caused by being Jupiter's moons. It has a protective sphere of defensive emplacements orbiting the system, all equipped with extremely advanced and powerful jamming equipment to prevent attacks but let friendly ships through.
    • The Moon deserves a special mention, since while it has not been terraformed it has been honeycombed with colonies and structures. This has led to some rumors that the tides are being ruined by this action, though the government maintains that that is blatantly impossible.

  • Tsumankyo: While a major front of the war, Tsumankyo has largely escaped unscathed from the devastation of other front worlds, like Aeris. Founded by Asiatic colonists, it preserves many traditions and stories that would have been lost to time if not for them. The planet is densely populated, but larger physically than Earth- Large areas of untouched land are common. Produces much of the Federation's food supply.

  • Berez: A successful world behind the lines, Berez was one of the first Colonies regained and has since grown fat off of trade with Earth for its various resources, including the main 'homeland' deposit of Mythril, mined by the Lerner-Baker Corporation. Infamous for its huge superhighways (to permit the movement of Frames and such) which every teen wants to drive on someday and turn the planet into a giant game of connect the dots at night, with its clustered cities connected by the lit roads.

Just some ideas off of the existing planets.

According to our guide, Tsumankyo is the name of the star. Kyotame is the planet.

Also it would help to know which planets are explicitly Federation and which are Centauri and which are currently being fought over.

Both sides would have 'frontier' regions, expanding in a direction away from each other, I was wondering if these were at all defined, and if there is any Cent planet by the name of 'Persephone'. If the answer is no, it's really yes but I'd like to hear the no first.

They don't follow any pattern. I assumed they were named by their orginal settlers using whatever method they liked best.

Though if you're talking OOC, I named on after the city of Atlanta and several others after cities in Pokemon and Lucky Star characters.

The Bannikberg Regiment (Currently consisting of Lorraine, Jimmy, and Annabel, recently joined by Roxy and Alexei with the Castellan serving as the flagship) is serving as an honor guard for the Centauri delegation while the 195th Ace Squadron Jaedong, Hobbes, Flint, and Piper act in the same manner for the Federation with the Seraphim. The opening ceremonies go off without a hitch until an unknown force (ROZUM) attacks the delegates, killing Centauri Prime Minister Ehrich Kahling.

16 February ’99 – Treaty is not signed and declared void. venne Bannikberg Regiment deployed to Geist System, picks up Earl along the way. 195th sent to capture the battleship Inspiration, commandeered by Moral Dor of the Shahal Republic. Battle between Seraphim and Inspiration ends with capture of Inspiration. Nicholas and joins the squadron in the battle. Hardekker joins a little later.

17 February ’99 – Bannikberg Regiment arrives in Geist’s orbit. Prison break-out aboard Seraphim results in the hijacking of a shuttle and the escape of Dor.

18 February ’99 – The Regiment lands on Geist in time to thwart a pirate raid on mining facilities. 195th goes on leave. Begins prep for trip to Yokolit.

21 February ’99 – Crazy shit happens. Bannikberg Regiment arrives on Yokolit minus Jimmy, 195th arrives on Yokolit shortly after with Gerry Mack (and Sune Arrows) expecting to meet them but Piper staying behind due to illness. Colette Fortescue crashes on Yokolit and joins the Centauri. James arrives late to join the regiment as well. Jaedong deserts. Lorraine is kidnapped. Earth: Top brass rethink their war strategy.

22 February ’99 – Jimmy and Keller get promoted and Julia Zalez takes Keller’s place. Knights and Aces cut vacation their short. Nathan and Rex meet up with Jaedong and then rendezvous with ROZUM’s Carradel Rice. The 195th takes in Rohiko Testbug. Lorraine finds herself imprisoned with other kidnapped service members. Bowchikawowow!

23 February ’99 – The 195th enters a space battle to protect a convoy, no sooner is this wrapped up do the face a giant robot lobster and Captain Quasp has a breakdown. Afterwards they have a pleasant chat with Lovesant. Knights arrive on Ubekon only to come under attack by a Federation raiding party. After a pitched battle the Federation retreats while the ROZUM prisoners manage to get out a distress signal.

24 February ’99 – Bannikberg Regiment intercepts ROZUM prison ship and engages in battle. Prisoners are freed and ship is captured, only to self destruct several hours later. Interrogation of sole enemy survivor reveals organization known as ROZOM is behind this chaos. Barney Joseph and Lee (and Mod) “dock” on the Seraphim as new Aces for the squadron. Piper recovers.

25 February ’99 - Bannikberg Regiment arrives in Yolut System. Romelia officially takes command of the Castellan while Leonard Reitman arrives on the ship where he has a weird mind-link moment with Piper for a moment. Juriaan Gerlach arrives a little later. Isaac Alesci even later. Federation Admirals Lean and Hanson gave a discussion concerning their peers.

26 February ’99 Jaedong deals with intruders while ROZUM leadership holds a conference. Knights arrive at Persephone and Leo and Piper have another mind link moment. Knights assault Fort Purgatory, take it and its men.

27 February '99 Knight leave for Ossetia. Elliot, the reporter, comes aboard.

28 Knights arrive on Ossetia and do some sight seeing before going to Lorraine's family reunion. Julia and Elliot have a chat. 195th chooses their next mission.

I'd like to bookmark one of the Langesh system worlds for expansion, where 'geographically' is it? In relation to the disputed zone and the centers of the two regions?
