Sounds like fascinating stuff! Umm, is it okay if I simply post my answers to the questionnaire on here rather than using my personal e-mail address? Might make the thread more interesting as well if people put their answers up! Having said that, I don't know whether that might affect the ethical viability of the research if the responses aren't anonymous... stupid research ethics making things needlessly complicated

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." - Some guy with a snazzy hat.Right then, here goes. Click on the ratings for more in-depth comments on each of the four tracks.
Track 1: 1/10
Track 2: 7/10
Track 3: 3/10
Track 4: 4/10
- Age group: 18-25
- Gender: Male.
- What is your main source of information about new music?
The internet. Primarily Drowned in Sound, The Silent Ballet and TV Tropes. - When purchasing new music, does the opinion of music critics factor into your choices?
Yes. But only if I don't know the musician already, and if the reviewer is someone whose opinion I know I can trust. - What are your 4 favourite genres of music? In no particular order:
Post-Rock, Ambient/Minimalist Electronic, Baroque-Pop, Choral Classical - Did your parent’s record collection influence your listening preferences growing up?
Yes. Lots of Folk (Steeleye Span in particular), Classical and the odder end of 70/80s glam-rock and left-field pop. David Bowie, Kate Bush, Talking Heads, T-Rex, you get the idea. - Do you feel your friends music tastes inform yours?
Online, yes. IRL, no. I love making your data collection complicated!
- Do you play a musical Instrument?
Yes. - If so, Which One(s):
Alto Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Tenor Vocal. - Is your occupation somehow connected to the music industry?
No - Is music an important part of you occupation?
No - Do you regularly read any music publication?
Not magazines, no. - Do you use any social networking sites?
Yes - If so, Which ones?
Facebook - Would you say you spend more than 20 hours a week on social networking sites?
No - Would you say that Social Networking sites inform your music choices?
No - Do you believe that social class is an issue that affects your day to day life?
Yes. I am at university
- Do you feel that certain genres of music are associated with different Social Classes?
Yes - If you had to, which social class would you say you belonged to?
Middle Class. Very, very much middle class. - Do you feel a sense of Cartharsis in Associating your favourite music to your social class?
Umm... no? I might need a bit of clarification as to the meaning of this question, maybe I'm just being a bit stoopid. - Do you find that you mostly socialise with members of your own class? Or is your circle of friends a mixture?
A mixture.
Hope this helps, I would be interested in seeing the results
One question I want to ask of you though: Are tracks 2-4 all deliberately of similar genres? I know it's not the done thing to question the questionnaire, but I'm just intrigued!

Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!Song 1: 0/10
Song 2: 6/10
Song 3: 4/10
Song 4: 5/10
- What is your age group?
10-18. 18-25 if stretching those two months left until I'm 18. - What is your gender?
Male. - What is your main source of information about new music?
RYM
.
- When purchasing new music, does the opinion of music critics factor into your choices?
I don't buy music, but if I respect the critic then yes. The only critics I seem to agree with are Greg Prato and Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic
and I hardly rely upon that website anymore.
- What are your 4 favourite genres of music? In no particular order
Technical death metal, experimental electronic, ambient, atmospheric sludge metal/post-metal - Did your parent’s record collection influence your listening preferences growing up?
(Your typo is oddly appropriate seeing as my parents are divorced and my dad lives in another country) Seeing as mom's not huge on electronic music or metal, no. Thanks for alienating me further from my parents, Internet! - Do you feel your friends music tastes inform yours?
No, that would be more in the reverse direction. - Do you play a musical instrument? Is so, which one(s)
Keyboards; didn't play for a long time though. - Is your occupation somehow connected to the music industry?
Unemployed. Kinda. Being a private teacher in English and getting paid about $5 per hour is not a job. - Is music an important part of you occupation?
Again, unemployed. - Do you regularly read any music publication?
Nah. - Do you use any social networking sites?
I guess Last.fm doesn't count here. Nope. - Would you say you spend more than 20 hours a week on social networking sites?
No, hate that shit. - Would you say that Social Networking sites inform your music choices?
Again, don't use them. - Do you believe that social class is an issue that affects your day to day life?
Yea. - Do you feel that certain genres of music are associated with different Social Classes?
Nay. That's a thing of the past in my opinion. - If you had to, which social class would you say you belonged to?
Lower. Life quality of middle, but definitely lower class financially. - Do you feel a sense of Cartharsis in Associating your favourite music to your social class?
No. - Do you find that you mostly socialise with members of your own class? Or is your circle of friends a mixture?
A mixture. A couple of my friends are middle-higher class.

Song 1: 1/10. Horrible lyrics, horrible song. No art to it all, just mass-produced pap. It's less music and more a vehicle to make money.
Song 2: 7/10. Obviously a bit of a classic, and obviously a good song, although it's not my typical fare and not something I'd listen to all the time. Solid, though - it's catchy, nicely politically aware and with some feeling behind it - I did like it.
Song 3: 3/10. Generic late 90s sounding poppy stuff. Meh. I didn't particularly enjoy it lyrically or musically, though it wasn't as outright horrible as the first song. It would do better if it sounded a bit less like every other song released around that time. The acoustic guitar with the electronic-y stuff and far too much inappropriate scratching underneath, the generically American voice, lyrics trying to be a bit 'goofy' and clever by referencing a load of other things and not really working at all... yeah. It's not great.
Song 4: 5/10. Oh, this? Wasn't this on the soundtrack to one of the old SSX games?
Again, I think it suffers from sounding a bit generic and late 90s-early 00s. You get the feeling it could've been put out by pretty much any pop-punky band from around that time, although the way it changes up halfway through raises it a bit above most of the other songs like it. I thought the vocal line was pretty catchy, but again it sounded a little generic, and the singer's voice is rather annoying.
What is your age group? 18-25
What is your gender? Male
What is your main source of information about new music? the Internet.
When purchasing new music, does the opinion of music critics factor into your choices? Not particularly.
What are your 4 favourite genres of music? In no particular order Progressive rock, ambient, progressive metal, post-rock.
Did your parent's record collection influence your listening preferences growing up? Not particularly, although there is still some music we both like.
Do you feel your friends music tastes inform yours? Again, not particularly, though I have one friend who tends to give consistently good recommendations
Do you play a musical Instrument? Yes.
Is so, Which One(s) Drums.
Is your occupation somehow connected to the music industry? No - I don't have a job.
Is music an important part of you occupation? Again, don't have a job.
Do you regularly read any music publication? No.
Do you use any social networking sites? Yes. Facebook. If last.fm counts, then last.fm too.

Would you say that Social Networking sites inform your music choices? In the case of last.fm, yes.
Do you believe that social class is an issue that affects your day to day life? Yeah.
Do you feel that certain genres of music are associated with different Social Classes? Again, yes.
If you had to, which social class would you say you belonged to? Lower in terms of where we live and the money we have, but middle-class in terms of attitude
Do you feel a sense of Cartharsis in Associating your favourite music to your social class? Not really.
Do you find that you mostly socialise with members of your own class? Or is your circle of friends a mixture? It ranges from people who are definitely middle to upper middle class down to people who are definitely lower/working-class.
On a scale of "worst sound ever conceived by humanity" to "heavenly organized acoustics" (or to make things easier: "three times worse than Friday and Enmity's repertoire combined" to "makes Scar Symmetry sound like crap"):
- 1: 3/10
- 2: 6/10
- 3: 5/10
- 4: 8/10
Dude, it was tough to work with that scale. Never gonna do it again.

What are your 4 favourite genres of music? In no particular order. A: Metal, metal, metal and punk rock. Well, if you consider metal as only one genre, it might be metal, punk rock, classical and electronic.
Did your parent’s record collection influence your listening preferences growing up? A: Just a very tiny little bit. Ok, actually it might had a big influence I don't know of, but stuff I listen today is totally dissimilar to what my parents listened way back.
Do you feel your friends music tastes inform yours? A: Not much, but I did get a few friends into metal.
Do you play a musical Instrument? A: Guitar (although badly), I fare a little better if you count DA Ws though.
Is your occupation somehow connected to the music industry? Please Elaborate; A: Nope; I'm a student and don't have a job and, even if I did, it would be related either engineering or chemistry.
Is music an important part of you occupation? A: Well, not really, but I do find that music helps me study sometimes
Do you regularly read any music publication? If so, which one? A: None.
Do you use any social networking sites? If so, Which ones? A: Not really use it that much, but Facebook and Orkut.
Would you say you spend more than 20 hours a week on social networking sites? A: I don't think so.
Would you say that Social Networking sites inform your music choices? A: Yes, I got lots of recommendations from users on Orkut.
Do you believe that social class is an issue that affects your day to day life? A: Yes, how could it not?
Do you feel that certain genres of music are associated with different Social Classes? A: Not as a rule, but where I live social classes indeed have their respective saturation of genre X.
If you had to, which social class would you say you belonged to? A: Around middle, maybe a little bit on the higher side.
Do you feel a sense of Cartharsis in Associating your favourite music to your social class? A: Yes.
Do you find that you mostly socialise with members of your own class? Or is your circle of friends a mixture? Mixture.

Aww, did I hurt your widdle fee-fees?Song 1: 2/10. It's catchy. That's everything positive I can say about it.
Song 2: 8/10. Funny thing; it's been a while since I last heard this song, and it's grown on me since then.
Song 3: 6/10. Well-written (nice music, too), but kind of generic. I could easily find a good dozen bands that sound like that.
Song 4: 5/10. Generic again, but upbeat and hooky enough to keep my attention (in a crude way).
Personal questions:

- Word-of-mouth, blogs, Wikipedia
- Only slightly
- Metal, electronic, hip-hop, jazz
- Yes, but that influence faded.

- Middle class

This looks like fun. OK, here goes!
Song 1: 3/10 - There is nothing inspirational or artistic about the lyrics, and the music sounds like every other Top 40 hit from the radio.
Song 2: 7/10 - Catchy groove, amusing and somewhat horrifying lyrics. Pretty entertaining.
Song 3: 5/10 - It was...OK. The lyrics seemed a little too rambling for me. Reminded me of Sublime's "What I Got"
Song 4: 6/10 - Typical radio rock. Not great, not horrible.

thank you very much everybody, I look forward to hearing from you all : )

I'm a music student currently in the second year of my BA in professional musicianship, I am currently doing my research project for my final term and have chosen to ascertain whether there is a link between music tastes and social class. I wanted to open up a discussion on this site because I feel it is an excellent platform for reasoned and sound debate, and I could glean some intriguing nuggets of wisdom from all you wonderful tropers :)
I have created a facebook, blogspot, and linkedin page for a questionnaire which I am using to gather quantitative data for my project, I'm aware that the internet is full of these, but if you could please take the time to fill one out I'd be really grateful :)
