This sentence from the Gender Bender description has always both intrigued and annoyed me (because no "answer" is given or even theorized):
The popularity of this and similar themes, among an audience that is predominantly non-transgendered, has been a widely noted phenomenon.
So, it's been widely noted, but are there any generally-accepted theories as to why it's a popular trope in Japanese works, exactly?
I'm curious as to what cultural differences might be at work, but mainly irritated by just having that "widely noted" hanging out there with no idea what's being noted, and by whom.
