Guys this seems to be spiralling off topic at an alarming rate.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

I think we're still collectively boggled by the last few posts from Major Tom.

@rjung: Major Tom is not the topic, nor is any other troper. That goes for the rest of you, too.

And yes, this is going a bit too far away from the topic. Back to Obama's leadership, please.

The demonym for a person from the United States of America is "American", so Barack Obama is an American leader, not good leader. Hope that answers your question, OP.

Not originally, but currently. But topic, and being off it; PM me if you want.

Personally, I don't think he is a great leader, but I don't think anyone who made a serious bid for the 2008 presidency would have been any better, and most of them would have been worse.

I think a good question would be whether Obama is still worth supporting in 2012, unless he somehow loses the nomination.

Most likely though he'll just be considered an average president long after all this.

How can...he lose the nomination?

Simple, somebody challenges him for it and wins. Typically, the incumbent runs either unopposed or the opposition is so poor the nomination process goes off smoothly in the incumbent's favor.

There is no such thing as "automatic party candidate".

Yeah, the thing is. Theres very very very little chance theyre gonna run someone against Obama given his poll ratings at the moment are pretty damned good and he hasnt done anything worthy of beinga suicidal candidate running for re-election.

Let's see, running against a sitting president for the nomination.

Slim odds on that happening. I'd rather bet on the Yankees to win the Superbowl in a 37 lap route of the Red Wings.

It's pretty darn close to an automatic nomination.

Not totally close, because the Democrats won't work as an actual party, and so some idiot may try to run against him, but he'll almost certainly get the nomination.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

The last time I asked about this, the most recent time somebody won the nomination against a sitting incumbant was Johnson in 1968, and the ONLY time somebody ever won the election after being nominated in such a way was Pierce in 1853.

I hope he'll win, so hopefully he'll actually do something, and ignore the republicans.

Given the fact that he started more military intervention, I propose that Nobel Prize Commitee takes it from him and gives it to me, as I never participated in any war (other than Flame War) and probably never will. I deserve it more!
