So...how about that atheism?

@Rott: See, what you call a "great historical romance", I would call "flogging a dead horse". Most Jewish laws no real relevance in the modern world.

@Elfive: So contra Beholderess, you'd say lax morals are superior?

@Elfive Except to Jews, mind you, the people the laws were made for. The idea that members of other groups should follow them is frankly a modern idea.

Theres a difference between "lax morals" and "baby raping death engine", you know.

Its not neccesarily "modern" more based in strict biblical literalism, such readings were not popular for a while because 1. Not a lot of people could read and 2. Those that did were mostly employed by the Church who thought that biblical literalism is for suckers.

"lax" does not mean "fewer" Rott, so you are using the term incorrectly.

I think it's important to strike a balance. If it doesn't hurt anyone, can you really call it wrong? Besides, if you have one person following a lax moral code of their own volition, and someone else following a stricter moral code solely because they think a magic man in the sky will torture them forever if they don't, who really has the better morals?

@Midget: To orthodox Hindus, people who eat factory farmed beef might as well be.

Considering the amount of torture from birth to slaughter that entails, they have a point.

Do you count animals in your definition of "anyone"?

@Elfive Let's not make generalizations about why theists choose their moral codes, shall we? Not all of us care about Hell to such an extent.

And this is why atheism is a flame magnet.

I consider it acceptable to kill another living creature under one of two conditions:

1: You plan to eat it, or

2: It plans to eat you.

eh. I'd add a third acceptable time to kill something.

3: when its erxistence in an ecosystem is invasive and destructive to other native life.

@Elfive: Yeah, well, some people have higher moral standards than that.

Whosoever participates in the torture from birth til slaughter of Brother Pig or Sister Cow has low ethical standards. Of course, there's nothing stopping an atheist from being a vegetarian...

Who said anything about torture? I'm not advocating animal cruelty. I just don't see anything wrong with raising a cow in a field, then shooting her in the head when it's time for steaks. Quick, clean, painless.

Who said anything about torture?

Nearly everyone I know eats factory farmed meat. Christians won't even abstain for Lent anymore.

This fact has had profound influence on my view of human nature, and that people have differing views of human nature cuts to the heart of why atheism is controversial.

In a similar fashion, it isn't cruel at all to do this to severely retarded humans.

I wouldn't raise a human in a field. We can't digest grass.

Also, I've heard that human is quite gamey. And it's not efficient enough to put Mr. Swift's proposal into work.

Society is predominantly religious (in most places). Atheists in general have a bad rep. It's all Christian bigotry. Since their prayers obviously don't come true, and because of the obvious superiority of godlessness, they feel they must attack them.
