Snyder really has a fetish for Jesus-Imagery. Quite disturbing, really^^

This is weirder than that time Joker defaced a Christ statue by Jokerfiying it.

...Is there ever going to be a point where Snyder doesn't associate superheroes and supervillains as deities?

It was fine-ish in MOS, it got grating in BVS, and now with Joker-Jesus, I'm surprised the Vatican didn't respond with a press release saying "Bruh."

Something that amuses me is that in Shazam in his film he is treated as if he were a mere local celebrity.

The funny thing is the JL are intended to be like a Pantheon of Gods, due to being the strongest heroes on planet Earth that can battle all manner of beings from Gods to Eldritch Abominations.

They aren't supposed to be fucking Jesus.

This reminded me of a joke I had with a friend about Superman going 'Praise Rao' whenever someone compared him to Jesus.

But the JOKER of all characters?

I'm guessing the Joker using that imagery is supposed to be deliberately ironic. Because, he's the Joker. He's pretty much the exact opposite of what a Christ-figure is supposed to be. I can see him dressing up to highlight the absurdity of religion and self-sacrifice. Maybe. Kind of...

I mean, it's not like the actor playing him has evoked cult imagery before or something right? Right?

At his core, Clark Kent is just a farmer trying to do the right thing with his powers. Turning it into a Jesus class is overkill.

I can't really fault Snyder for the "Superman as Jesus" symbolism, since that's been used since at least Superman: The Movie. Of course, as avert as that film was at points with Jor-El's speeches, it wasn't as blatant as to literally refer to him as a god several throughout the story.

It's rather ironic Superman became a Christ-figure when the character was created by two Jewish-immigrants. His origin really has more shades of Moses to him than Jesus.

[up][up]Mehhhh is not like other writer havent asociate superman with divinity, he want to be a farmer but he can pretty much flex is muscle and kill humanity if he wants, is kinda imposible not to see that way.

[up][up] I could grant that. While yeah, the films need to stop with the Messianic archetypes and deification already and remember that Superman is an actual person with an actual "human" (so to speak) character, he was not the first person nor even the first filmmaker to fall into that archetype for the character and he probably won't be the last.

Though, that said, Snyder's take on Superman always felt like a response specifically to those older movies rather than an adaptation of the character as a whole, which imo is still part of the problem his films have had.

The DCAU had tons of Superman stories without relying on the Messiah elements, so various film versions constantly having to resort just feels like a lack of imagination.

Like [up]x2 mentioned, I think it's more along the lines of "the Donner films and nostalgia for them colors how Hollywood approaches the material" more than just "lack of imagination."

[up] You know what is surprising? That there were people who still believed in it.

I knew from day one it wasn't happening since Ryan hated the experience of Green Lantern. He's made the movie his go-to punching bag ever since it came out. Heck, he even teamed up with Taika Waititi to disavow the movie when they were promoting Free Guy.

My assumption is that they'll want to wash their hands completely of the 2010 version and just go with John Stewart anyway to capitalize on his popularity, but who knows?

The man literally put a gag in the Deadpool 2 credits of Deadpool killing Ryan Reynolds to prevent Green Lantern from happening.

If that doesn’t clarify his feelings on the matter, nothing will

For the record, it isn't just that green lantern was a mediocre and underwhelming movie. Apparently reynolds was cast behind the director's back by the studio, when said director wanted someone completely different and didn't particularly want to work with someone else. This led to a very tense and unpleasant work environment, of which the only positive for reynolds was meeting his wife.

Dimes to Dollars the Director wanted a lesser known/unknown for the role but the Studio needed/wanted a 'name' for investors

[up]That seems to be a fairly common issue. Taika Waititi ran into that when he was asked to direct Akira. It's why he bailed to focus on the new Thor movie.

Also, apparently Green Lantern was heavily butchered in post-production, with Martin Campell having pretty much no say in the final edit of the movie:

One thing I feel needs mentioning: this is not Martin Campbell's cut of the film, but the studio's. I live in New Orleans where it was shot, I read the shooting script, all of which was painstakingly filmed with intense research, and all of that was left on the cutting room floor - a sort of combination of what happened to Daredevil and Watchmen, respectively - character development sacrificed for CG, scenes made irrelevant by removing their setup. The movie in the theater starts with an explanation of mythos that is made redundant by the more natural, scripted questions from Hal when he gets the ring. Ten minutes of childhood Hal, Carol, and Hector that sets up Hal's first ring construct is reduced to an awkwardly placed flashback in the middle of another scene. The training with the ring is almost completely excised except for one minor scene. Most appallingly, the ending completely deletes the fact that Kilowog, Sinestro, and Toma-Re arrive at the end and help Hal defeat Parallax. Not to mention Parallax was supposed to be a 3rd act reveal after we spend the film worried about Hammond going evil, not the main villain for the entire film. I sincerely hope we get a director's cut or at least all the deleted scenes on the video release.
