So assuming you decide to get into music, imagine you're being interviewed about this question or you need to take out an add and you want the bands who find you to know where you're coming from artistically. Who do you list as your musical influences?*

Mine would probably be...

Bands:

People (items within parenthesize explain respectable points in order)

  • Semitic music, apparently
  • Soundtrack music all over the spectrum
  • Kajiura Yuki
  • Rush
  • folk music from all over Europe

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.

So this is basically "list your favorite bands filtered by the genre you'd like to make music in"?

[up] Or do make music in...

I'm less one to act on direct influences than follow on ideas that appeal to me or accept certain minor affectations via osmosis. I'll assemble a proper list when I figure out how to organise it, but for now, I'll keep to the maxim that brevity is the soul of wit:

John Cage. Yeah.

So brevity's the soul of your music too?

[up] Not quite; more often than not, it's quite epic in scale. Rather, I prefer to remain laconic when describing my own work, as I hope that it is capable of speaking for itself beyond the simplest gestures of title, presentation and so forth.

Well, currently my music is IDM experimental/ambient techno with an electro house and occasionally minimal undercurrent, so:

  • Autechre
  • Aphex Twin
  • Monolake
  • Pan Sonic
  • Daft Punk
  • Digitalism
  • Justice

A Breeze from Hell was amateur experimental techno mixed with wannabe rock, so Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails*

.

I do make music but it rarely ends up sounding like I imagined it to or the actual influences I thought were behind them.

But I guess I'd say Frank Zappa mainly. Also Genesis... the early years that is. And uh, Gentle Giant is of course phenomenal when one considers arrangement for the rock band. Their music should be in a textbook or something in that regard.

As a saxophonist I'm mainly influenced by Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Junior Walker, King Curtis and Lou Marini. I'm nowhere near as good as any of those guys, though.

I don't really know if anyone particularly influences my piano playing. I'm a pretty limited pianist (I was only really allowed to learn exam pieces for the better part of a decade, so I feel that skills are pretty stunted) and I can't improvise very well on the instrument or play it originally.

My bass playing influences consist of my school's music teacher and some random guy in a Youtube video.

Seeing as I have been just a bit active in the music business locally for a while, I've been asked about my influences a couple times and funnily I wind up naming artists not really related to the genre that I would belong to.

I often refer to:

  • Sade
  • Björk
  • Miles Davis

when talking about non-genre-related inspirations and

  • Ice-T
  • Wu-Tang Clan
  • Jedi Mind Tricks
  • Z-Ro

as genre-related inspirations.

Any gil drops from at least an inch above my wide open palm. Thanks in advance.
