In light of Japan's incredible tragedy and massive ongoing crisis, does anyone know how the manga and anime community of creators and actors has been impacted? With 10-20,000 people still missing and so many unhealthful conditions about, I feel for all the Japanese people, but my mind keeps wandering back to these particular creative types. Any word up or down on anyone?

There's a huge list of people who confirmed they were okay (via blog or twitter and such).

So far, that magical girl anime from JC Staff is the only anime that was dreadfully impacted by the quake and tsunami, because JC Staff's facilities were in the area of the flood, and the anime hasn't had a new episodes since early March. And this Summer 2011 shows a harsh shortage of titles than usual.

And there's the whole thing with the last two episodes of Madoka Magica, which are allegedly delayed because the disaster shown in the final episodes would be a bit Too Soon.

[up][up]Are you talking about Madoka? That is made by Shaft and not JC Staff.

The only confirmed death is the one of Hiroshi Kakoi, a producer of Macross II.

I think a better question to ask, rather than "who is alive?" would be "who is dead?" instead.

The earthquake was bad, but the % of people killed is comparatively low.

A list of "who's confirmed dead" would be much simpler and shorter...

But apparently the earthquake or tsunami destroyed a paper mill or something. Now THAT will impact the industry.

Also, I worry about DMW...would that anime be Too Soon ?

Shueisha confirmed all of its own, including by extension Lynn Okamoto. Thanks.

I wonder what fiction and format within Japan itself will be the first to broach all this, and when. All the Godzilla movies, but most especially the original, take on a new light for me now.

Well, there's always the one from two years ago.

I guess it is.

Halting those big web-fed printing presses for the 3 hour rolling blackouts can't be helping the manga industry, either.
