Not trying to give an actual example, but ironically I do not know if your first sentence is sarcastic or not. The interjection threw me off, as it could be either way.

I'm not sure why exactly, but I always seem to default to women when writing. Need a main character? Woman. Need a random passerby? Woman. Need a group of people in a magic ritual? Women — all of them. I think it might even be the cause of me not being able to write men well, instead of the result.

Finally feeling okay after being sick for what seems like forever (YAY!), which is good because my actual word count for the last few days has been shot to hell (^*%#!). Still need to wrap up my Big Bad restaurant scene, still need to figure out what's going on in chapter three, still need to figure out what's missing from chapter two.

Thankfully however, I actually managed to sleep last night, which means I've got the entire day ahead of me to do all of that. Now I'm just waiting for the sun to come up enough that I can type and get warm at the same time.

I tend to default to males, and have struggled with making likable females. I think this has to do with the fact that I find males attractive, and thus they get all the zany personality traits as well as a huge exposure to wacky male characters, and more straight-man-esque females.

I actually was very proud of myself when I turned a flat female character into a boisterous type, since it was proof I was able to move past gender when it came to giving characters quirks.

For some reason, my female protagonists are more varied than male protagonists in terms of appearance. The female ones tend to have a wider range of skin tones and races, hair style, and body types, while my male protagonists suffer from a literature version of Only Six Faces, or even Only Three Hairstyles and Only One Body Type. The only real common trait between the girls is that they have small endowments. It's strange, because I'm a boy.

In terms of personality, however, both genders tend to be more varied. I have the Shrinking Violet, the Genki Girl, the Determinator, etc. with both genders.

My characters tend to be pretty varied, mostly because my influences are pretty varied, and my characters tend to echo their influenced work a bit.

Yuki = Setsuna Sakurazaki
Leo = Naruto Uzumaki
Lena = Kurumu Kurono
Mordecai = Mordecai
Amaya = Konoka Konoe
Keaira = Evangeline AK McDowell
Holy crap, until I did that I didn't realize how much of an influence Negima was on me...

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like pinning these four threads at the top of the forum has vastly improved the quantity and quality of conversation going on.

Cool.

I wish it was summer so I could get back to writing. Averaging 9 hours of homework & class a day does not leave much time for anything.

Look, you can't make me speak in a logical, coherent, intelligent bananna.

I have finally completed Chapter Twenty-One: Counterattack! Two Great Armies Clash!

Now onto the last chapter of the second act and onwards to revising, repairing and re-writing the earlier parts in line with both the style of the later chapters and better ideas I have in place of what is written in several spots. Once that is complete I can begin the penultimate arc of the first book of Endless Conflict "The Siege Of Dreyorball".

Also since I got Open MPT I might try my hand at getting the soundtrack in my head for the book out into tangibility.

I'm bad at writing women. It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy - whenever I try and make up a female character, I tense up thinking "Oh no, I'm bad at good female characters" and then I overcompensate by making her Marysuish.

So I'm debating on re-working an Old Shame fanfic while I wait for Na No to roll around.

Can't really think of what to start trimming, though. I definitely need to cut all but about three lemons (the ones that aren't plot-relevant), but since they were filling in a large portion, I'm not 100% sure on how to fill in the gaps.

Maybe I should look to the source material for some ideas...

[up][up] I used to have that problem. I used to think that I had to make my female characters not have too many flaws, or I would come off as sexist. Fortunately, I learned better before any female Sues became members of my creation multi-verse.

The only female characters I have who aren't flat as cardboard (I have about 3) I got by working out the basic personality traits and role before assigning gender.

I think whatever I was sick with last week gave me an ear infection. Its a bit infuriating, really, because I don't usually get sick all that often.

Other than that, though, I'm feeling good and coherent, which is really nice after feeling hazy for a whole week. Hopefully it will stay that way, because I'm tired of staring at a blank screen and having no idea what to write.

My story has a character who remodeled a whole castle he found into a genetics lab. It employs, like, forty scientists who were all turned immortal by a lab accident. I need to find names for every last one of them, the place seems like a rich source of plots. :D

And suddenly I hate my wuxia story's characters again. I seem to be Tsundere towards them. I still like my setting, though, so yay.

I... I don't think I've ever heard of a writer being tsundere towards their characters... I don't think I've ever heard of anybody being tsundere towards a character, now that I think about it, though...

In relation to the above: I generally work out the basics of personality and traits before I assign gender, for the main characters it all happens before a pen hits paper (or fingers hit keys) though. Now if only side characters were so easy...

I rarely think about character gender; they tend to come out gendered, though sometimes this changes (but without my intentionally thinking about it, most times). It seems I default to female most of the time if I haven't specifically intended a character gender.

I sometimes assign gender first for my supporting characters and I have no problem deciding their basic personality. My male protagonists however...

I'm still trying to figure out my under-represented woman problem...

Funny thing, in 2030 you would think there would be more women serving. Then again it takes a alternate history after WWII and the culture stagnates at the early 2000's, so maybe from one point of view it is believable that socially the same struggles have been going on for many more years.

If I add a female antagonist, I have a really good way to do this... I think it will really add to some dynamics. Hehe... not spoiling anything just yet.

edit: I'm a fucking genius I just killed three birds with one stone. I'm doing it! I'll mention it later when it is more developed.

Just wanted to post my new idea, see what you guys think of it.

A semi-Slice of Life set in a present day Steampunk world. Revolves around the lives of creative teens that like to think outside the box and want something from their government that they aren't getting. Possibility of a Villain Protagonist.

I don't follow the "Villain Protagonist" and 'not getting things they want from the government' part. Can you extrapolate?

You had me at Slice of Life in a Steam Punk world. You would need to do a bit of world building though, and hopefully it wouldn't turn to be a life sitcom IN STEAM PUNK.

If you can avoid that, it sounds like it'd be an awesome idea.

By Villain Protagonist, I meant that the lead character/characters would be against the government. Not really anarchists per se, but they are doing things in this world they shouldn't be.

Also, the plot might also include inklings of Clock Punk. The working title is Renaissance, named for both the changes from Clock Punk to Steampunk as well as other new discoveries being made and things changing culturally, as well as the character development of the teenager characters in a coming of age story.
