When did you start to distrust the government?

[up][up][up][up]: This. You'd be surprised how many good, hard-working people you can find in the public services. Additionally, politicians don't always have it easy... it's not easy to articulate a well thought out position on a complex and controversial issue, but it is very easy to run a fear campaign

I realize my government is fallible, obviously. Also, I know that some members may be untrustworthy. But I don't go around actively distrusting the government. That just seems silly to me.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

^^^ When I got a jury summons a few years ago I wasn't like "crap what can I do to avoid this?" I was curious. In the sense that "Hey I wonder what this is actually like?"

Needless to say I was one of those selected for the jury of the case.

Never did Jury Duty. I wouldn't mind doing it, but I've had a deployment coming up right around that time and been excused, or didn't want to do it at the time so I managed to bullshit some military orders saying I needed to be excused anyway.

I got out of jury duty for several years of college on account of being way too far away and in classes. Didn't really have any problem doing it when they called during the summer. It was actually kinda cool.

Gimme a break, black helicoptor theories aside, did ANYONE here ever fit the mold of boyscout-like true blue patriotism, without the slightest air of cynicism or frustrated resignation to basic civic duties like juries or taxes?

Well no, but we could at least ask to not have our laws written by this.

You mean besides when we were six?

But yeah, I see the US Gov't as largely Lawful Incompetent, and yet still better than the alternative.

What was the case like?

Domestic violence, sexual assault and the like, you know the drill.

Needless to say the evidence didn't stack up on any of the charges save one.

I almost got selected to do jury, for a breaking and entering and assault case. But the case would've pushed into my school term.

^^ Only the most minor charge of assault stuck. Everything else was not guilty.

I do trust the government. Most of the time.

It's not always efficient (in fact usually it's terribly inefficient), and it's not terribly benevolent (or at all) to people besides its citizens, but to it's citizens it's pretty damn good.

I mean, it could certainly be better, but I don't see why everyone hates it so much. It's got a better track record than most large organizations.

Honestly I’m astonished the Republicans and Democrats haven’t merged in to The Party.

Nineteen Eighty Four is a tad impossible to pull here. Between Fox News and all the gun enthusiasts and nobody willing to go along with a formation of The Party...yeah you get what I'm getting at.

@tnu: Oh please. The government is easily the organization that does the most for you in everyday life.

Do you use money? Roads? Do you enjoy not being murdered? Do you expect that if your house is set on fire, someone will put it out?

Do you enjoy houses that don't fall apart? Paint that doesn't kill you? The Internet? Your garbage not being piled up outside your house? Non-toxic water?

How do you like being able to read? Or add? Do you like being educated, in general?

I could go on for a few pages, but I think you get my point.

No for the reason that most of these things could be handled without government and frankly should be. You're going under the assumption that a centralized government is the only way to attain these services when it pretty much sucks at doing that.

Do you enjoy houses that don't fall apart?

Bad example mate. Houses are never built that shoddily, government regulation or not. (If you had phrased it "do you enjoy houses that don't fall apart in a 5.0 earthquake or F1 tornado" then you might've had a point.)
