"Huh." Sora experimentally moved her shoulder and ran a hand over where some of her bruises were. Her body still ached a bit, but nothing too serious.

"...awesome! Alright, so, my place, fighting games - right? I'll call my dad and tell him I'm bringing some company over."

The spirited girl flipped her backpack over to the front of her and reached in to grab her cellphone. She then noticed a sizable number of texts and missed calls.

"...ah, whoops. Hold on a moment; gotta call Ito-kun to tell him I'm not dead..."

Noa watched Rei heal Sora. Woah. That'd be a handy power to have. I wonder what my special ability is? It didn't really pop up during the fight with the witch...

"Good job Rei! I doubt I could have done something like that." She reached up to scratch the back of her head sheepishly with a grin.

"And yeah! Video games!"

"Alright. Alright. Alr- you can stop asking questions now! I'll see you in class tomorrow, okay? Alright. Good night to you too Ito-kun. Yes, I'll study."

Beep.

"Okay, got that out of the way... So, what game do you feel like playing tonight?"

"Healing is a basic ability of all Magical Girls, Fujimiya-san," said Rei, quietly observing Sora's cellphone conversation with an amused expression on her face. This Ito-kun really was worried about his friend, wasn't he? "It's something you just know. You'll understand once you start getting hurt, but do still try to avoid injury: as I said earlier, we are not invincible."

After a couple of minutes or so, Sora finally ended the interrogation call, stuffing her cellphone back into her bag. In response to the girl's question, Rei replied "I'm fine with just about any game, really. Do you have anything specific in mind, Fujimiya-san, Minori-san?"

"N.. no, I don't really play games. I'd love to come along, but I have no preference in what you do..." Minori thought these were some of the stranger magical girls she had met... but then she hadn't really met that many...

Sora frowned a bit. "Alrighty. Well, Noa-chan, it looks like it's you and me who get to decide what we're playing today! Lesse... school was that way, so home would be... there!"

The girl pointed in a seemingly random direction. "I'll race you all to my house! Let's go!"

Without bothering to give the other girls instructions on how to get to her house, Sora immediately took off running, completely ignoring the fact that she was covered in bruises just a few moments ago.

"Everyone is so energetic. Good! A good spirit and a good heart is exactly what a Magical Girl needs." Minori watched the girl run, wondering where she was going since the way she pointed was the quickest way out of the city...

As soon as that thought popped into Minori's head, Sora proceeded to turn and run left on the coming intersection, bumping her shoulder on a nearby fence as she did so.

"Ah no wai-"

Too late. Sora had already sped off.

"..."

Rei hesitated for a moment. She had wanted to go to the grocery store (which was nearby, by her design) to visit her parents (because she almost always did so), but this girl!

... She knew how to get back to the store. Sora's house, on the other hand, was currently in a completely unknown location.

With that in mind, Rei promptly began pursuing the energetic girl.

"Ok-"

Sora took off quite abruptly, leaving Noa standing there still trying to get her whole sentence out.

"Hey wait!" She took off not long after, laughing heartily the whole way. At the same time she couldn't help but realize that for the first time since moving to this city, she'd finally had some real fun. If only she could've become a magical girl earlier!

"C'mon, at least try to keep up!"

Sora laughed as she took a... rather unorthodox route to her home. Running down inconveniently crowded sidewalks, running through various pieces of playground equipment at a park, hopping over more fences than really should be necessary... More than once did Sora unnecessarily swing on a tree branch or around a pole, and more than once did she bump into some obstacles she should've been able to avoid...

It's not the destination that's important; it's the journey!

Sora finally made it to a seemingly nondescript house with the family name "Yamamoto" written in English on the front wall by the gate. Taking just a moment to catch her breath, she looked back to see if the other two girls had caught up.

After a while, Ayaka stood up, taking one last sniff of her precious flowers.

"I'll be back tomorrow, okay?" she said to nobody in particular.

Turning her back on the clearing, she carefully made her way back into the city, gazing up at the evening sky. It looked like she'd make it back just in time-it was starting to get dark outside. Ayaka began walking at a relaxed pace, taking care to watch for the cars, tossing her key into the air and catching it as she did.

"I wonder what we're going to have for dinner...." she asked herself, hearing her stomach grumble as she approached her apartment complex.

"Kiku! You're bath is ready!" Akane called from inside the bathroom.

"Alright... then... take your time, Kiku-chan. I hope you enjoy it" Akane said to her sister just before she closed the door to the bathroom.

Standing outside she let out a little noiseless sigh... just before she decided on her course of action. With purposeful steps she made her way to the little terrace on the roof of the house.

"Kyubey? Can you hear me? We need to talk... alone"

One of the potted plants on the balcony shifted slightly, causing a little scraping sound that startled Akane. Kyubey stepped out from behind it, then settled down, looking up at the girl. "What is it, Akane?" he asked amiably, tail swishing. "Whatever you need, I'm sure I'll be able to help."

It's been fun.

Kiku laid back in the bath, trying to relax. Time to think about this magical girl business.

She'd already decided she was going to keep fighting. She'd just been caught off guard by the sudden appearance of a second witch, that was all. She rather hoped that she didn't keep having to fight two in one day.

It had been terrifying. She was still scared, even now. But Akane was right. She'd been warned by Kyubey that it would be dangerous. It would be cowardly of her to run away from her responsibility. Jeez. Responsibility. Akane's rubbing off on me.

Prepared. She needed to be better prepared. Fortunately, she already had quite a few ideas. I won't be caught off guard next time.

Akane brought her hand to her heart and let out a breath to calm her heart after being startled. After that she tried to regain control of herself as she faced the small animal.

"Kyubey... I'm sorry, but we'll have to cancel Kiku's contract. She isn't ready for such a thing... and after what happened today I'm sure she'll rather not be a Magical Girl" Akane explained, trying to remain as calm and composed as she could "That pen she carries... you gave it to her, right? Well no problem, you can take it back but she cannot be a Magical Girl anymore"

Kyubey sat still for a moment, then licked a paw and swiped at his ear. "What are you talking about, Akane?" he asked, seeming almost amused. "The contract can't be canceled. Magical Girls are Magical Girls until the day they die." He tilted his head to one side, still looking directly at Akane. "What a silly question, really! Our end of the bargain has been upheld. Why on earth would we cancel a contract?"

"There has to be a way to annul the contract. Kiku-chan hasn't been a Magical Girl for even a day! Also... it's not like her wish was something too hard to undo. Please Kyubey... my sister made a rash decision, she isn't ready to deal with this!" Akane begged of the white messenger.

Mustn't run away. My sister is counting on me. I can't let her down. I have to be strong for her. Don't think about (the knife swinging down, slicing the flesh from that woman's arm) think about protecting her, it's not just her either, it's everybody that suffers because those horrible things exist. Once I kill all the witches in this city, there will be peace again, and I can go back to being a normal girl. Just stay strong for now. Stay strong.

"I suppose there is one way," Kyubey mused. "And it's your choice whether you want to accept it or not. But even I don't know if it will work for certain," he admitted, hopping up onto the railing. The sun had been hidden by the mountains some time ago, leaving the city draped in grey twilight; the little white creature's eyes caught the light from behind Akane, reflecting it pure red. "Want to try it, Hanami Akane? Make a contract with me and become a Magical Girl in your sister's place."

It's been fun.

On the television sets of a number of homes in Yamanaka...

"...reporting to you live from outside of the family restaurant known as 'Ameriburger' where, just a few hours ago, a bizarre and most gruesome incident had taken place.

"According to eye witness accounts, during the restaurant's early evening hours when a fair number of costumers would come in to have dinner, more than a dozen chefs paraded out from the kitchen - each armed with a knife. With a voice on the restaurant speakers cheering them on, they proceeded to assault their customers and coworkers, trying to, quote, 'cut the fat from our bodies.'

"Thankfully, however, a number of individuals did what they could to incapacitate the crazed cooks and though a number costumers and servers were admitted into the hospital, none of their injuries will be life threatening.

"One tragic irony of this event is that while no customers have been injured as a result of this incident, a number of chefs have been critically injured, and some have even turned up dead. A female chef, presumably part of the chefs which threatened the restaurant, was found with her skull crushed inward by an unknown blunt object. A second chef, found laid against a chair in the kitchen by a recording device and a security display, had apparently slit his own throat - but not before slicing slabs of his own flesh from his body. He is presumed to be the man who communicated over the restaurant's speakers.

"Of the chefs that survived, one who had attacked the customers on that fateful evening had his shoulder torn, rendering his arm useless. And it wasn't just the chefs that were part of the assault that were injured: in the kitchen, a number of chefs who didn't join in the attack were found mutilated, some suffering from severe gashes and cuts while others suffered from severe burns. Of all the chefs in the restaurant at that time, only five or six were not severely injured, all of whom the police suspect were involved in the incident.

"The chefs that didn't have immediate medical needs were taken into police custody for further questioning about the incident. The cops are still investigating the reason behind the events, and the motivations behind the suspects. We'll update you with more details surrounding the event as they get uncovered."

Make a contract with me and become a Magical Girl in your sister's place

Could it really be that easy? Could she really just throw her future away in place of her sister?

Yes

Of course she could. It didn't matter if she was afraid... there was nothing more horrifying than imagining her little sister caught in all this mess. Akane didn't want to see her suffer like that ever again.

She was ready to contract already, right? Then it should be fine to simply exchange one selfish wish for the other.

Akane remembered Kiku's words... how she shouldn't contract, how they should figure this out together, how she would step up and take responsibility for her actions. If she agreed to this then Akane would be betraying her little sister, her trust, her ideals, her determination...

And yet she would still do it.

Kiku can hate me for this... If she never wants to speak to me again then that's fine! As long as she gets her future back, that's enough for me.

"If it doesn't work... then what would happen, Kyubey? Would I become a Magical Girl even though you didn't grant my wish?" Akane asked, her hands made fists, her gaze filled with determination.

"I don't know," Kyubey replied honestly, balancing with no visible effort on top of the railing. "That might happen, or rather, I can't say that's not what's going to happen. Any number of things could happen to you. Even so... if you make a contract, I will do my best to grant your wish."

A wish for a girl's life is a lot more hopeful than a selfish wish like Kiku's... hello, net profit.
