This is for a short humor comic.

The Gentlemen's Organization of Demonic Pugilism is a secret society composed of compulsive gamblers who summon demons to do battle and gamble on the results in the sewers of London.

Demons are summoned using magical items camouflaged as mundane objects like canes and pocket watches. The actual mechanism of tying a demon to an object is left unspecified currently. But breaking the object will result in death. Summoning demons drains the life out of people and causes premature death and subsequent damnation.

While the fact these men can't think of a better reason to use the powers of Hell is a running gag, I'm not sure how plausible the whole thing is. The organization is not particularly large because the objects for summoning demons are rare so their conspiracy isn't wide to start with. Though one line I want to keep mentions dumping a demon into Loch Ness.

The demons are fish like or amphibious. They aren't particularly intelligent and don't speak anything humans can understand.

I'm not sure if the sewers are the best venue. Prior to the sewers, they would go to each others' estates, but they kept fighting over who had to pay for collateral damages to the landscaping, some of them filled their ponds so they didn't need to host, and some servants blabbed. But sewers are under the city and dark magic works best at night so I'm not sure if people can sleep through the sound of eldritch abominations cockfighting at 2 AM.

Though how plausible does a setting for humor have to be??

For humour? Personally, I don't think anything has to be plausible as long as it's for comedy's sake. I mean, just look at the air bubble or Megamaid in Spaceballs. Or the Proton Packs in Ghostbusters But back to yours. Yeah. it sounds plenty plausible.

Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.

This sounds like something that would show up in a Dr. McNinja webcomic. Which is pretty awesome.

Carry on.

I mean, if it's plausible for the world you're building, where demons and supernatural exist (although they might be hidden, as the GODP does appear to be a secret society), then this would totally make sense.

"Plausible" goes out the window as soon as magic shows up.

So long as you can keep it internally consistent, though, suspension of disbelief shouldn't be hard.

I guess I'm mainly worried about how difficult it would to keep a secret. I don't particularly like Extra Strength Masquerade, and they don't use magic besides summoning.

Maybe they should pool their money and buy a place way out in the country specifically for the fights?

I've been mulling between the two

Countryside:

  • More out of the way so less people are around.
  • More fresh air
  • If the battleground a river, whoever is downstream might notice the demon blood and guts floating down. I'm not sure how to upkeep a lake/pond.
  • Might need more accommodations. I figure if it's far away enough that there's no one around, it's a long carriage ride or a long train ride so they might want to rest before going home or eat something in addition to coming to summon demons. So that would require more servants around to keep at least a small sort of clubhouse and more people get involved. Most of the members of the GODP don't like to work much if they even knew how to do it.

Sewers:

  • Under everyone so excessive noise might be noticed, but fighting under the poorer parts of town might mean the people above don't have much clout in complaining.
  • Demons smashing against the walls could be dangerous
  • It smells (though they might wear masks, and they can afford to bathe often and just buy new suits constantly)
  • Dangerous on especially rainy days.
  • The fact it's already dirty makes the demons' messes less obvious
  • The GODP headquarters is in London. (When they're not playing with black magic, they're actually a fairly normal gentlemen's club)
  • Less servants involved assuming at least one of the GODP members has the arm strength to lift a manhole cover.
  • Multiple sections to do battle in and multiple entrances

I support this idea.

And yeah, I could see the trouble this could cause in keeping it hidden. I guess you could have the demons evaporate upon death?

I guess they could evaporate. Initially I was thinking they'd return to Hell or the Abyssopelagic Zone, the body definitely disappears.
