Yes it does.

But asides from aesthetics, I mentioned already, it discourages, doesn't wipe out, but discourages people forming stupid cliques, it reduces the pressure for certain students to conform with the other kids and buying new clothes whenever a new fad comes along.

And then theres the fact that it's more orderly, and it makes it easier to see if a kid belongs in your school or just a tresspasser.

Schools, or atleast the officials keep on trying to raise "school spirits", and uniforms are a good way for students to identify with their school.

And nothing looks better than a group of students in uniform standing straight and marching in and out of assembly halls in an orderly way.

Ah yes. The trespasser thing was another reason my school instituted the policy. That and the threat of gang violence as well as the fact that nobody followed the former dress code. We also banned use of lockers due to problems related to drugs and violence. The locker thing sucked, but most teachers simply adapted to either keeping the books at home or at school all the time. Many had classroom sets.

You have a very very strange definition of what looks good.

Oh, and as far as different school stuff, my school had everyone wear bagdes so you'd know who belongs to your school. Uniforms aren't the only means of solving that problem. (Although I hated the badges too. Ugly things.)

Son of a bitch, I wish MY school did that! It would save so much trouble and made life so much easier...no need to worry about someone sneaking in a giant battery powered tools to break open lockers, no need to worry about leaving books at home...lighter backpacks...no need to run back to lockers between classes...

Everyone needed to buy a sturdy lock if they wanted their lockers safe.

Oh yes...things like that are very good looking. Sadly no one marched around our school halls in such a cool fashion. It was more organized chaos with cute uniforms. Most of the time anyway.

Note that I only said MOST teachers Signed. There remained the good few who made you bring them too and fro all the time. I got very unlucky in 7th grade and ended up with a list of teachers who had you carry the things back and forth either because they lacked class sets or just because they did. I had at least one who would never let ANYONE use the class set books.

My school would not have given teachers enough books to have everyone in the class keep a classroom set. That means if we didn't get our lockers, we'd be carrrying seven textbooks with us at all time...

They didn't ban lockers, but they did put cameras in the hallways after I picked the lock on the locker belonging to a guy I hated and left a rotten egg in there over a three day weekend.

Oh and then came high school...Where some of the classes had classroom sets but no one was allowed to use them except as punishment for not bringing your issued copy. To which I could only go "WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHY".

I still kinda want to make my own school and teach at it... but I'd think most parents would refuse to send their kids to my school if they ever found out what I've posted in Fetishes.

I thought I would like to be a teacher. Then I realized that I hated students and would be driven insane by having to teach them and deal with all the shit teacher's deal with.

I think we're getting dangerously close to turning this thread into another Fetishes.

Personally, I'm in favour of school uniforms. Why give students yet another avenue to compete with and/or mock each other over?

As long as the uniform design isn't something horribly uncomfortable, I don't see the problem with them.

I already got mocked in high school for dressing like a forty year old out of uniform. I'd rather not have people view me clothes first and personality second.

Besides, I just found it way more convenient. Instead of 5 outfits a week, all I had to worry about was 3 sets of the same thing, skirt and top, comfy shoes. So much less fuss.

Be not afraid...

@Loni: Except that you still get mocked for your clothing. Also, uniforms are usually quite expensive, and it becomes easier to pick out the poor kids because of excessive wear on the clothing.

I hated not being able to wear the nice clothes my family sent me, because the uniform shirts were around $40-45 each, and my parents could only afford to buy me one. So I was the kid with the shirt that was faded and starting to tear, and had odd patches in my pants. Not to mention that polo shirts make me look huge, so even though I was a size 14, I got picked on a lot for being "the fat kid".

My uniforms were rather cheap things. Cheaper than the clothes I would wear outside of school. It was great. I never did get the skirt I wanted though. I had this ugly fucking skort thing. Unlike a sensible skort it was just a pair of shorts with a flap of fabric in the front. All in all I only needed three maybe four of these.

In my experience people didn't pick on people based on clothing. Nobody's uniforms were particularly worn or horrid looking. We found other reasons to pick on people. Like interests or whether or not your face looked "good". I myself went through more or less unbullied. The one bully I had was kept away by an older friend I had.

But aren't regular clothes expensive too? Seeing as you have to buy more of them?

I'd rather find long-term solutions to having people learn how to treat others properly... as previously mentioned....

^You need to buy them anyway, unless you plan to wear your uniform around all the time.

@Loni: No? The last time I bought clothes in the past two years were work clothes, and I spent less than $50 total on them.

Some of those skorts are nice sensible ones that look like a skirt all around but have a pair of shorts stitched in underneath. The one I had only had a stupid flap in the front...it just...fucking hell man. WHY.
