"There's more than one method of dueling"
Miles dropped the rapier, catching it in his left hand, drew his pistol, and fired.
There was a moment of silence.
"Kidding. That was a blank. Sorry. Bad joke."

It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve.Alexia stood in silence, both of her wrists at her hips.
"That was not funny!" Alexia said. That wasn't a proper way of dueling. Besides, if he was too close when he fired that blank, he might've hurt someone. She knew that from experience, which involved a boy's first time with a pistol. When she last saw him, he still couldn't see correctly out of one eye.
OOC: I see no one pointed out the Pothole pun yet.
Christina exploded through the bedroom door, a knife in each hand and an expression of cold fury on her face. She stood there frozen for a moment, eyes darting from the gun to the undamaged family. She fumbled the knives back into her pocket, a rare blush rising to her cheeks. "I, um...gunfire." she coughed. "Taking a nap." She closed the door behind her with painstaking timidity, as if apologizing to it for practically shaking it off its hinges.
Alexia jumped as she saw Christina burst through very quickly, and closed the door at the same speed. She was stunned yet again.
"So that's where she went." she thought, "Thinking about it, she has a weapon too. If things get too crazy, it would result in an all-out royale."
OOC: Wait, there's a bedroom downstairs?
The mansion appear to still have Victorian sensibilities judging from the decor and style, Clare decides. 'Ol Daddy-In-Law likes class, but he can do with a bit of change. She has been wandering the premises, exploring the crooks and nannys as she hauled her bags on her shoulders. Habitually, she prefers to prepare herself for contingencies in the event that something does happen.
Which, as she hears a thud echo, might be the case. The sound almost reawakens her wartime memories.
She strides down the grassy cloves to the houses where the guests are meant to stay. Deducting where the gunshot might have come from, she picks one of the houses out of the blue — and wandering down the hallway to the bedroom, she smells the raw iron smell of fired cordite. Slowly dropping her bags, she peeks inside the room.
Miles' pistol is still smoking. The mist still lingers in the air. Who or what was shot, Clare can't tell at first.
"And what might be happening?" Her raised voice carries authority, such that you'd know it in your gut of your guiltiness. "Why are we shooting?"
"Bad joke. Terrible, in fact. You have to be here to understand it. Oh, and by the way, that is a form of dueling, actually... It's the back-country west virginia version."
It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve.Alexia ran into the room, while carrying the edges of her dress.
"Mom! You're back! Miles and Daniel insulted each other, and started a duel. As you see, Miles used a blank for a very bad joke." She looked away in a Shakespearan way, "Our reletives are so dysfunctional."
"It was a blank. And I can promise you, if I shoot anyone in this family, the bullet won't have been wasted. The bullet will have saved my life."
"And you're one to talk! Which one of us can't keep from popping a sweet into their mouth every five minutes? Have some self restraint! Moderation, Alexia!"

"Put that pistol away. We're not going to fight each other. I'm not going to act like your strict schoolteachers, but I want you all to plant more sense into your flaccid minds. It'll do you good in the long run."
He nods. "I understand where you're coming from. And I hope it doesn't come to that, as well... I've seen too many die... I have too much blood on my hands without my own on them."
It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve. That reminded her. Alexia reached into a hidden pocket stiched into the outside of her dress, and popped another piece of hard candy into her mouth. She rolled it on the side of her mouth.
"I can't help it," she said through the side of her mouth, "It's a habit I developed since I was eight. Besides, it helps me stay composed and occupied. When you started talking about your cooking, I stopped popping sweets into my mouth and I started getting all emotional and stuff."
Thinking about it, she over-reacted. But also, the sweets helped her get more calories to fuel her power. If her blood-sugar level went too low, she would become non-responsive, possibly putting herself in danger in several different ways.
Lucia blinked, slightly disoriented at the rapid chain of events, having so many people talking at once. It was like she wasn't even there.
Witty repartée is not my forte. Pronunciation and grammar are."Oh, hey, that reminds me! I need to pick my room!" Lucia interrupts.
Witty repartée is not my forte. Pronunciation and grammar are."No," Alexia said, pointing upstairs, "My room is upstairs. You should see the bathroom. It's like a spa."
She looked at Miles, "Blood on his hands? What does that suppose to mean? Wait..."
"Had you ever send a defendant you knew that was innocent to his or her death?" Alexia asked Miles, quietly, "You do have a perfect record."
"No... I've never doubted my victories... The evidence was absolute. The jury was impartial... What else could I do, but my best... but... There's bound to be at least one who was innocent... and..." he looked up. "I have to wonder... each time I walk into court... Is this person innocent? Am I going to ruin their life for something they didn't do?... And there's blood... that isn't... court related..."
It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve.OOC: I lied. I'm staying on for just a little more?
"What's with you rambling off all of the sudden?" Alexia asked, getting closer to him. Looking at him straight in the eyes, trying to see what was going on in that head of his. Even after just meeting him, she was starting to read off some stubtle clues. Not enough to detect if he was lieing (Christina was a horriable lier when she was around), but...
She was worried. She thought that Miles was trying to hold back some emotion with his stone-hard face, "What do you mean, not court-related? Does that mean...?"
OOC: Ah ha! He'll do anything...

Lucia looked at her brother, worried. This was a side of him she hadn't seen before.
I guess...he really has changed...

"Spar." Daniel said, holding up a finger in correction. "However, we seem to be having a slight compatibility problem, how shall we ever settle our differences now. Oh woe is us." He said, touching his chest in a particularly faux-melodramatic gesture. "Whatever shall we do?"
