Running the register is a social and technical job. I'm probably just getting by on the social side, but I'm highly proficient tech-wise. People who had been around long enough to get settled when I started ask me for help with advanced functions or refer newbies to me. If they needed trainers right now I'd probably be a strong candidate.
But the people who schedule see "new hire, part time".
The next two weeks have me in for more time though. And I'm not in a position where the lessened hours are making me decide between food and rent.
Fresh-eyed movie blogNobody said anything, I just know I'm not as friendly as others. I do my best, but I'm not very talkative.
Just saw how many hours I have week after next: 21! That's only 10 hours less than I got used to in November.
Fresh-eyed movie blogThis is probably a temporary ramp up to Valentine's day, come to think of it.
I had a few people surprised I was still working there.
Fresh-eyed movie blogI dunno. I hold the opinion that every job that has you interacting with clients/customers should have you perform some sort of engaging interaction with them. This kind if thinking was mostly drilled into my skull during my first year training in the tax office, where client retention is key. Still, I've been able to use that in other aspects of my professional and social life, so it definitely helps.
Personal opinion, though.
Well, yeah, the social part is important, but only when business is slow enough for you to not hold up the line by having a chat. When I was still a cashier at McDonald's I could talk to regulars all I wanted in the early or late shifts, but during rush hours I could barely get in a "hey (name)".
So, try talking to customers when you don't have much to do.

Well folks I am officially the only guard at my post. All other guards are either working at other sites, flex officers (any site that needs a short term guard), or looking for other employment.
This means I am reponsible for everything during the hours I am here. I get the joy of waking up various indidividuals and possibly making them grumpy.
We are playing it by ear this week because a key person had important life event they needed to attend to. So likely next week I will get the polished process.
Who watches the watchmen?Dang, Tuef, that doesn't sound like a lot of fun at all. I hope the chaos really does straighten out soon.
I've finally gotten a call back from the spa. There was a misunderstanding. This week, the manager is only scheduling interviews for people who had applied for massage therapist positions. People such as I, who applied for retail positions, will get interviews within the next two weeks. So I have to wait a while longer, but at least I'm not in limbo anymore.
I was hurt by a circular saw tonight at work.
Fortunately, I work at a retail store, and it hurt me by bumping aganst the scanner (inside the box) when my finger was between the two.
DG's current assignment got extended too...by how long we're not sure but they told her to come back Monday even though it was supposed to have ended today. Thank God, we can use the cash...though every time I drive at night its a risk because of burnt out headlights (and a lack of car insurance). I got a ticket for this two days ago that amounted to $750 all told, and having a ticket pending is no defense against getting another one.
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~Car headlights are outrageously expensive. Put any thought into modifying cheap bulbs to fit your car?
Fresh-eyed movie blogDrunk: Is it just the bulbs or the headlights as a whole?
The bulbs are thankfully relatively cheap. if the head lights themselves are crapped out I suggest trying to find replacements at a junk yard. They will also be relatively cheap. Well relative vs buying brand spanking new facotry lights.
Who watches the watchmen?@Tuefel: it's the car. While the bulbs are cheap, there's a short somewhere in my electrical system that makes them burn out really quickly. I've replaced both headlight units at one time or other and that didn't fix the problem. And I don't have the cash to pay someone to go digging through my car with a multi-meter looking for the short.

Mr Dolomite: Practice!
Paradox: Man, that sucks. I hope things improve for you.
My brother advised me to wait a week and see if the manager returns my call before I ask to schedule an interview again. It has been two days and I keep worrying that the position has been filled.
I'd say the waiting is like pulling teeth, only I worked at a dentist's office and they informed me that pulling teeth other than wisdom is actually pretty easy.
