Well, I stand corrected on the name quality thing. :)
Spell Blade: So we'd create a new page for the "old" definition of Nightmare Fuel in that case?
No to a straight merge, because then you'd be throwing a perfectly valid trope...or is it Audience Reaction?...out with the bathwater. Maybe Nightmare Fuel needs to be called Childhood Nightmare Fuel but that would be a separate proposal.
I also support a rename because it's a misleading snowclone that's missuse fails to be justified by any Grandfather Clause
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianNightmare fuel renamed could work...but it shouldn't have to. Nightmare Fuel is a preexisting term. The wiki users just tend to misuse it.
High Octane Nightmare Fuel is not a preexisting term, and if it is to blame for misuse with another page it is only superficially related to, I think it should be changed. Intentionally scary counterpart to Nightmare Fuel is Defanged Horrors, Defanged Horrors has more to do with Nightmare Fuel than High Octane Nightmare Fuel does.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackIf we're going to rename either of them, it should be Nightmare Fuel. Renaming it Accidental Nightmare Fuel will do far more for sorting things out than renaming this one.
I don't support a merge. They aren't the same thing.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickUh, what? The name is from MST 3 K, and while the context there did create the definition we use, it's certainly not used that way in the actual episode.
I'm willing to spend great swaths of time changing wicks. I'm not saying it would be easy. And to all the people with one-word "no" or "oppose" answers: PLEASE verbalize why!
Fzzr Miller because underscores are brokenIf you insist, since Nightmare Fuel is for kids stuff and High Octane is for the adult side, keep the High Octane name, and change Nightmare Fuel to, oh, I dunno, Gonna Give Kids Nightmares?
Because that's what it means.
Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.![]()
The trope is widely misused as Nightmare Fuel But More So. While there is no way short of telepathy to be 100% sure that the name is responsible, it very much sounds like Nightmare Fuel But More So, so...
It's not being misused as Nightmare Fuel but more so. All those uses are correct. If it's scary, and it's supposed to be scary, it's in the right place. The problem is, that people are misusing Nightmare Fuel.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickLemon Demon made a song called Nightmare fuel which is basically the page's trope description.
MST 3000 started in 1989, Lemon Demon started in 1986, yay for Bing!
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackBut the page description insists the Trope Namer is MST.
You're not calling the description wrong, are you?! :)
Beh, the NightmareFuel page used to list that Lemon Demon song as its quote. Fast Eddy deleted it because it was too long a quote, its in the page history if you don't believe me.
If its insisted MST did it first I guess I'll just have to take the troper's word for it, I don't feel like doing more research over this.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackAccidental Nightmare Fuel does sound like it would go a long way for preventing misuse.
I like that. I still think a merge is an even better idea, but that is a pretty good alternative.
I propose a multiple proposition crowner (not necessarily right away, we're not quite ready yet) with at least the options "Merge with Nightmare Fuel" "Rename" "Do Nothing" and "Cut".
Fzzr Miller because underscores are brokenI don't see the need for a distinction; see my post in the merge thread here
.
There already is a trope for that Leaper, its called Defanged Horrors.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackHowever, I personally agree that that's a pretty pointless distinction. I support a merge, and definitely support putting up a crowner so we can get something more substantial than "I think it's a good/bad idea" posts.
Let's see... subjective trope, difference between forms is related to inferred intent... yeah. Considering how many tropes exist in the subjective envelope based on Alternate Character Interpretation of either characters, authors, or both, it seems rather silly to separate things according to whether it was intended to be scary or not.
Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.
Crown Description:

If we just merged the Nightmare Fuels, we'd fix a lot of misuse across the wiki.
I think we discussed that in an older thread - I'll see if I can find it.
