Okay, so I have no objection to what was being called Nightmare Fuel being re-termed, but changing all the existing uses of it was a terrible way to enforce the change. Since most of the uses were incorrect according to the definition, hence the rename, now everything says Accidental Nightmare Fuel when it should mean actual Nightmare Fuel or High Octane Nightmare Fuel.

Now it's even more work to fix, since we changed all the frakking incorrect uses to a trope name they don't match. Great.

Now that we've freed up the term Nightmare Fuel, we can use it to describe all the improper uses of Accidental Nightmare Fuel, since people misusing it anyway. We no longer have need for High Octane Nightmare Fuel except as The Same But More, since we can just say "Nightmare Fuel" instead. Then people will stop complaining and it will work.

Trouble is, according to the last crowner, the majority specifically did not want to rename HONF.

I don't see why not, but there you go.

As for the complaining about old trope names changing, well, I think the attitude that it's okay to let widespread misuse go because you happen to like the name (and/or just because it's old, and by some logic therefore sacrosanct even if it's not one of the Tropes Of Legend) that causes the misuse is a lot more damaging than the actual changes.

Could someone kill the automatic pothole rename thingy? It turns a lot of things into nonsense now.

[up][up][up] They were incorrect before we changed the name. They're just more obviously incorrect now which means they're more likely to be fixed.

No. Forcing people to fix them by making them more wrong is not a solution. It's incredibly inconvenient in every way. Nothing wrong with changing the name, but if you're going to change all the Nightmare Fuel entries at once, they should redirect to High Octane Nightmare Fuel, since that's what most of them already refer to. We renamed it because of rampant misuse. Denying the misuse and forcing us to fix it manually is contradictory.

[up] They are not more. Wrong. They are the same amount of wrong. They are just a more obvious wrong. Redirecting it would just make it wrong in the other direction and wouldn't fix anything or get anything fixed. The only way to fix them is manually because most of them aren't either trope at all and just need to be deleted.

So, if ANF is for stuff that is unintentionally scary, and HONF is for the intentionally scary stuff,I think we should put some of the Video Game folders into HONF. I'm pretty certain, for example, that the scary stuff in Kingdom Hearts and Legend Of Zelda was intentionaly scary. Other than that, I think I'm alright with the change.

[up] There are all ready a number of Video Game folders and pages, but feel free to add more and move things into the correct category.

You know...now that the "Nightmare Fuel" name is free, we can use it as the middle ground. Specifically, we use ANF for unintentional examples, NF for subjective, scary-for-some examples, and HONF for stuff that makes thirty year olds cry.

So, can we move the page to Accidental Nightmare Fuel and change the original page's custom title back?

^^^ I think Nightmare Fuel would be more fitting to an index now, for tropes relating to that which is scary, intentionally or unintentionally. I do not think the distinction between accidental and high-octane nightmare fuels is that clear-cut either (perhaps something was intended to be SOMEWHAT scary but ended up being much more so; or vice versa) but creating a middle ground would leave us with examples ambiguous whether they belong there or Accidental Nightmare Fuel, or whether they belong there or High Octane Nightmare Fuel, etc... it would not solve the ambiguity, just create more of it. Any reason for the current distinction to be oversimplified doubles as a reason why a middle ground is not much better.

Some Nightmare Fuel isn't supposed to be truly scary, just unsettling. Therefore, its neither Accidental Nightmare Fuel nor High Octane Nightmare Fuel. Plus, with the new database actually using the words as written, some Troper Tales (et. al.) have "Accidental Nightmare Fuel" where it used to be Nightmare Fuel. I suggest MERGING the two: Accidental Nightmare Fuel and High Octane Nightmare Fuel into just Nightmare Fuel.

I don't think it needs further renames... although maybe nightmare fuel should stay as is, and Accidental Nightmare Fuel become a new trope, after all, sometimes writers do try to make things scary without it being high-octane nightmare fuel.
