Building a Magic System for a Vague Canon

Building magic systems is fun; there's no doubt about that, especially in original fiction. When it comes to Fanfiction, there's usually something for the author to build off of (unless they're writing Canon Defilement and just completely wreck it).

Inuyasha doesn't really have very much at all on this in The Canon - just Ki Attacks and no revealed system for how in the heck the powers/abilities work, except in the case of The Hero's BFS - and even that's sketchy.

I've seen it done interestingly before, in a particular Original Flavour fic, but I'd like to do it differently. Reading the Magic and Powers page, I'm thinking of utilizing Blood Magic (in a sense - powers vary from individual to individual, especially with the impure blood of the Half-Human Hybrids, which accounts for their powers' instability/extreme variability), along with Elemental Powers (a la Kagura, Sesshomaru, etc.), Functional Magic, Ritual Magic (in the case of most humans who can use it, like the priestesses), Pure Energy, and possible Summon Magic.

For those who know the fandom, what are your thoughts on this? Can you help?

For those who don't, how would you put these powers together with Empathic Weapons and Ki Attacks?

Thanks so much!

Here's an idea that I haven't seen, but then I don't watch/read much these days (including Inu Yasha). Suppose magic is based on intelligence, which is more like an energy field than a process restricted to brains. It does accumulate mainly in brains, but in the case of an Empathic Weapon it can also inhabit objects that don't have brains. Maybe these objects need to be enchanted in some fashion(s) first.

Certain people can read the field around them, which gives them telepathy. Others can gather and focus the field, which gives them Ki Attacks—they are destructive only to the extent that the target resists the user's ethos. Magical battles become debates, loud and flashy, but still debates over deeply held convictions.

Under World. It rocks!
