Holy crap, this thread is still around!
Watched (and rewatched) a lot since my last post. For anyone interested, here's the list
. Thanks to Diabolik DVD and WipFilms.net, I've managed to get ahold of a lot titles I had previously been unable to find, though I still need to get to most of them.
Lately, I've been looking into "slasher novels". I've ordered Apeshit, and have been looking for a few others (specifically Joyride
◊, Slay Bells
◊, and Deadly Detention
◊) but so far, no luck.
A while ago I found The Slayer from youtube
. Decent film and the climax had nailbiting tension, but the ending left me flabbergasted by its straight use of "all just a dream".
God, I fucking hate that twist, and similar ones ("Sorry protagonist, it was all just an elaborate ruse we all pulled on you, LOL!")
Bought Texas Chainsaw 3D (and ManBorg) yesterday. I also have the Andreas Bethmann films Rossa Venezia, Exitus Interruptus, Exitus II and K3: Prison of Hell on order.
I also intend to go to the local library to see if they can get me any of those slasher books I mentioned. Probably not, but hey, worth a try.
Don't know much about slasher books, but I've heard that Jack Ketchum's Off Season is rather slashery.
Found Don't Go into the Woods from youtube. That film's soundscape is just mindnumbing. No music, and most of the dialogue is made of unconvincing screaming and the Final Girl saying "Huh?" or "Peter!" But it did make me get up from my seat and wash my dishes.
~Don't go out in the woods tonight, you probably will be killed~
Hard to believe that was ever Video Nasty. Of course, quite a few of those only seem to have made the list due to Insane Troll Logic ("I don't need to watch them to know there EVIL!").
I still need to see the recent Vincent D'Onofrio film of the same name. I hear it's also awful. Too bad, as a musical slasher could have been cool.
Night of the Scarecrow was fun. The kill scenes are supremely ridiculous. Thrill as vines shoot out of a girl's boobs. Gasp as straw works like a Flechette Storm when blown at people.
The director seems rather dismissive of the movie on the commentary...then again, he seems dismissive about several of his films(like the Puppet Master ones he did or Pumpkinhead II.)
Also, Fiona Dourif let slip an image of her with Chucky in Curse of Chucky, not expecting it to go viral, but it did. I guess the fanbase is more rabid than people suspect.
The new Chucky doesn't look too bad. It's kind of nice to see him back to normal, even if the stitched up and scarred look was pretty cool.
The last slasher film I watched was Sex with a Stranger, a horror-porno based on And Then There Were None. It was bearable until the twist ending, which caused my opinion of it to plummet. It's a Faux Horror Film. The mostly offscreen deaths include a tumble down the stairs, electrocution via vibrator, poisoning, drowning in photography chemicals, and the combination of a spike through the head and a knife in the back (the only truly bloody moment).
I found the three books I was looking for; Joyride is the one I'm looking forward to the most, as it was published during "The Golden Age" and is apparently quite gory. Slay Bells also sounds interesting, having a Bad Santa running amok in a shopping mall during a snowstorm.

Two Thousand One Maniacs. Robert Englund's a trip.
I do kind of wish all slashers weren't Shoot the Shaggy Dog stories, because then there'd actually be some suspense, but no big deal.
Bought Reazione a Catena. Good stuff, though it is a bit confusing by the end. Also, this is probably the first film I have seen featuring a bill hook as a weapon.
Discovered and ordered another "slasher novel" - Clawhammer
◊.
Watched the Rapist Rampage Double Feature; I had already seen Wet Wilderness, but not Come Deadly. I wrote elsewhere that while it was slightly more competent than Wet Wilderness, it was also less "fun" due to being nowhere near as sleazy.
That is NOT cranberry sauce!
I remember when I first saw this. I was expecting a completely generic and run of the mill slasher, and was taken totally off guard by the level of gore, especially that awesome split head.
I hope it gets a new DVD, one that isn't cut to shit.

That's Not Cranberry Sauce would be a great title for a Thanksgiving-set slasher. In fact, it should have been the title. Nightmare at Shadow Woods makes slightly more sense than Blood Rage, I must say. Oh, well.
I edited to say I only just realized now that the only reason Terry is stopped is because he changes shirts. Awesome.

Paramount has apparent gotten the full rights to the Friday the 13th series back, in one of those deals where you either use them or lose them within a set number of years.
Arrived, and holy crap! The Rossa Venezia's case is the size of a goddamn laptop!
First three books got here! Suh-weet!
Started reading Joyride ("More TERRIFYING than Halloween! More GRISLY than Friday the 13th! The ULTIMATE Terror Trip!")
From reviews I've read, the killer gives the impression of being Captain Ersatz of Cropsy. Hope to have a page up for it sometime during the week.
Watched "Open House" last night.
It's quite a bit like Funny Games, minus the You Bastard! message and with better pacing and more blood. David's kind of a more sympathetic Peter (though I can't say if he was actually inspired by him), and he's played by Eldridge.
I liked it.
I still need to see that one. I rewatched the 1980s Open House (unrelated, but I thought I would mention it anyway) a few weeks ago. The potentially interesting plot was brought down by the dullness (it felt so long) and it's inability to decide on exactly what kind of film it wanted to be. Still, it did have the villain (I honestly could not tell if he was black or not) kill a realtor and her client with a plunger covered in razor blades.
I'm about halfway through Joyride (I've been preoccupied lately) and so far, so good; though I keep wanting to skip over the chapters set in the killer's past. I've also ordered another book called Black Christmas
◊ (no relation to the film, which did have a novelization).
Teaser
for the upcoming Easter Sunday starring Robert Z'Dar. This, Easter Bunny Bloodbath, Easter Casket, Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill!... no can complain about a lack of Easter slashers anymore.
Watched Summer's Moon and Needle.
Bizarrely, they had a Bittersweet Ending and an Earn Your Happy Ending, respectively. I did not see that coming.

Same with the hockey mask from Rape Squad, or whatever it's real title is.
Checked out Camp Daze/Camp Slaughter, a Summer Campy slasher with time travel and a "Groundhog Day" Loop. Great ideas, terrible execution.
Bought American Mary. Not a slasher film, but thought I would mention it anyway, because I feel obligated to shamelessly shill any recent horror from up here in Canada.
