...ah. When you said the south, you weren't kidding.
Oh, here's one you should definitely sample if you see it on draught in a pub: Doombar. It's a Cornish ale that tastes as good as its name is awesome.

If the customer knew anything about Scotch he'd have ordered a single-malt anyway.

Local brews, eh? Well, back in Edinburgh we have the mighty Deuchars IPA and McEwan's Export. Its a rare treat when you walk into a pub and they have Export on tap.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiI love a good IPA, but the local one (I'm from a fairly rural county, so we only have on brewery) called the "Union Jack" is really quite mediocre. Sierra Nevada (not actually local, unless you consider in-state local, which I don't) has an few excellent picks, including the "Torpedo" and "Ruthless Rye"
I'd rather the world betray me, but I won't betray the world.I'm more into my browns, porters and stouts (which is one reason why I like Wychwood so much: they know how to treat those segments nicely). Having said that, I'm not adverse to all blondes and IPAs. But, I can get a bit picky.
Bog-standard cheap larger? Is for-emergencies only. Or, when in a restaurant that doesn't offer much range. <_<
I also like me a good cider or perrin. Even if they don't always like me.
Oh, and if I can get my hands on some proper krieks, I'm in there like a shot. Complex little numbers that can satisfy on a number of levels.

So yesterday night, I went to a bar and had three bottles of beer (Molson, Miller, Budweiser) and three drinks (gin & tonic, rum & coke, vodka & Red Bull). Mostly my head felt hot.
No hangover, just slept more than usual (8 hours compared to usual 5~6). My liver and kidney probably hate me right now, though.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.Mostly cruddy, when I lived there.
Think "you're lucky if it is as good as Carling" levels of sis-tog. Things have improved a bit, with many more breweries starting up post-apartheid and the giants have had to do restructuring. (Nobody in their right minds will truly miss the death of Lion Lager once they've had much better — well, apart from the Nostalgia Filter brigade.) But, I don't really have a handle on the current scene. Sorry. -_-
The big one is still Castle Lagar, though. And, yeah: gnat's piss.
Back in the day, home-brewing was where it was at, if you wanted anything like variety. Also, it used to be the only way to get traditionally brewed... beers (not all traditional brews are technically "beer", even if they are close and use wild ferments). Warning: they get very medicinal — acquired taste alert!
In short: wine was where the variety was at. Beer was just there to get cheaply drunk on. That, or regulate the temperature of the fire with.

It's my birthday, and I'll drink the Irish if I wanna!
No really; today I turn 35 and I decided to nab a pint of Bushmills. So far it is treating me right proper. In the context of tonight, Irish whiskey for the WIN!
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~I'm almost exactly a year older than you (though all I had last night was an Ommegang pale ale). Happy birthday!
The child is father to the man —OedipusChocolate stout is a lot better this time around. It helps that I've warmed up my palate with a few other drinks, and possibly that it's called "Charlie and the Chocolate Stout".
Fresh-eyed movie blogSo, it turns out that I really like porter ale. A few days ago I went to a pub/brewery... and seriously, that roasty taste just blew me away. I'll have to try my hand brewing something like that when I return home for Christmas.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.Well, I'm guessing that I've been on this website for a good deal longer than most of you, though I may not necessarily be older, so I assume it's no longer inappropriate for me to be on this part of the forum.
I have a decent lineup of beers I've been excited to try right now, which are mostly locals besides Sierra Nevada Flipside, which looks promising. I don't know if any of you have tried it, but I'll let you know how it is.
So I tried alcohol for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago. I had what amounted to about...two shots...I think?
Anyway, I took a larger sip than I did before (which was still a small sip) and it triggered my gag reflex and...well...yeah.
I was a bit of an asshole when tipsy, but out of curiosity, is there any alcohol that isn't so...obvious in the alcohol bit?
Read my stories!Isn't so ...alcohol... as what? I mean, what did you have?
If it was vodka or tequila, hell yeah, there's lots of stuff out there that isn't so alcohol-y.
If it was scotch or bourbon or some other whisk(e)y, it depends. Some of them are very smooth, others are very alcohol-y.
If it was an alco-pop, like one of the flavored malt liquors or a frozen daiquiri, no, there's not much that will be less alcohol-y tasting, because those taste far more of the flavor than the booze.

Go for cocktails to get used to alcohol. My standbys are Margaritas and Tom Collinses.
When I go to a bar, especially a new bar, I'll usually order one of those first because I get asked for a drink order before I've had time to assimilate the menu. The place I went to this week, however, didn't appear to have anything but house-brewed beers. My first one was the one I enjoyed least, but it was pretty good for a light-colored beer.
