I put up a picture of someone holding up a magazine, but Sean Murray I keeps pulling it, claiming it's just words. I say it doesn't meet any "bad picture" criteria, even if the trope is conveyed by the cover, but that just means I insist it doesn't get pulled for now, not that we can't find a better picture later.

I see no big deal about it.

I'd like something better, ideally, but it's definitely not a pull-on-sight image.

Considering this is a Stock Phrases trope, I doubt we can find a good image that isn't text-heavy - this one is pretty good - it's easy-to-read and colorful.

I find the image "meh". It's not terrible, but it's not very good to me.

The purpose of picking an IMAGE is to demonstrate a trope VISUALLY.

When demonstrating tropes entirely through WORDS at the top of pages, like this "picture" does, we make something called page quotes.

You cannot reasonably say that this suggested "picture" has any added benefit to the page over:

"500 Reasons Why Krull is Better than Sex."
American Dad

Page images are supposed to help convey tropes to readers with less words—not entirely with words.

Nice bolding skills, but what would you suggest that we do to demonstrate this dialogue trope in an image?

We don't.

A dialogue trope does not need an image because it is all conveyed through READING.

Again, images are supposed to be for looking at—not reading.

This is only a colorful page quote, at best. It's not an image.

[up]Would you kindly calm down? You seem to be against tropes having words at all, judging by all of your previous posts regarding these sorts of matters. I would honestly say for you to calm down, take a deep breath, and quit it with the random bolding.

That said, I wasn't able to see the image because it got pulled before I looked at this thread. Somebody mind showing me it?

Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.

Sean, we're supposed to post images in the thread if we get consensus that they're images that need pulling on sight. You pulled it after the thread's creation despite what's looking like consensus (except for you) that the image isn't bad enough to be insta-pull worthy and then didn't post it here.

Please don't do that.

Here's the image.

Yeah, suuuuuuuuuuure it is.

^^I am not against page images conveying content through words, provided that there is visual content present within it to provide additional information to conveying the trope. For example, see Trust Me, I'm An X; the character using the Stock Phrase seen holding a chainsaw provides visual information that helps shape the trope's use that the words DON'T provide by themselves.

All I am against putting what entirely amounts to a page quote in a box in place of any actual visual representation.

This anti-word stance thats developing around images is getting pretty damn ridiculous.

Look, is it somehow too much to ask for an image that uses actual imagery to help convey a trope?

Does putting a page quote in a box set a good standard of quality for something calling itself "Image Pickin'"?

I'll agree to that stance when it's a visual trope. For example, Wrench Whack shouldn't have a picture of a guy saying "I'm going to hit you with a wrench." But when it's a dialogue trope, if we're going to depict it, it's going to be a picture that at least includes text.

Also, could you please cut the bolding out? It's annoying and it makes you seem far angrier than you really should be after something as minor as a page picture argument.

Again, I've yet to see it explained what added benefit this so-called "image" has over a page quote.

What does that picture say to any of us that the below options don't?

"500 Reasons Why Krull is Better than Sex."
American Dad

From American Dad, everybody!

The former is worse because it doesn't sound like something someone would say, and therefore looks weird as a page quote.

The latter is worse because it was made specifically in order to be a bad image, and doesn't include anything other than text.

How? Both clearly demonstrate the trope. In fact, they contain all the relevant material to explain the trope from the original picture.

It really should not be too difficult to, at least, get something with a little extra visual reference though, right? At least an image of a person holding up a cake exclaiming, "This is Better than Sex!" would include a visual reference for what someone is saying is better than sex and not just spell it all out in words.

This is nothing but a box full of words. It's a very low standard to set for picking images—even for Stock Phrases and dialogue tropes.

Yeah, I'd like a better image but from what I've seen I'm pretty sure the grounds for pulling an image without a replacement are:

  • Copyright sign
  • Not demonstrating the trope
  • NSFW-ness

Not "we can do so much better than that," which is what applies here.

I agree with Sean Murray I on this one. The image is a poor demonstration of the trope. It's just a Title Drop and...that's it. It doesn't add anything meaningful.

Title Drop != good image.

I went through the examples list...there's not anything that could really work as a pic except for the Loserz example, and we can't use it because it's NSFW. The Simpsons pic is alright, but it's just alright. I'll side with "no pic".

[up][up][up]The trope is a stock phrase (first sentence), which actually means those words are part of the trope, not a title drop.
