I have nothing against Off-topicness, I was just pointing out how radical the subject changed.

I'm also curious as to what that argument is.

It's very simple: Hold up a Carl Barks graphic novel or a collection of Marvel Masterworks, and watch the manga fanboys weep.

I'd question the logic of holding a view, and yet knowing of an argument that you feel proves it wrong.

It just shows you haven't lived long enough. A good believer is one who knows what's wrong with his beliefs but still feels strongly about it (as opposed to being pig-ignorant and just pretending the flaws aren't there, which seems to be the route most TV Tropers take).

"Logic" is limited. First off, it depends on there being proof, and yet things can happen without anybody being there to see it. I'm holding up three fingers—or am I? You don't know. People who rely on logic are easily pwned not only because of things like this, but because logic causes people to think predictably, so anything that happens outside their expectations is instantly mind-blowing to them.

That's why the "just show them a Marvel Masterworks book" ploy above would work. See, nerds like to quantify everything "objectively" and the above would be reminding them that art is not objective and doesn't have to be weighed on a scale. They simply wouldn't know how to respond to that, except with sheepish marginalizations and bleatings of "nobody cares so I'm going to go play video games with my imaginary girlfriend" (and then proceeding to post every five minutes, proving he neither has a girlfriend nor is he playing Bubble Bobble).

And why would anybody weep at the sight of those?

To put it simply: Just like how saying "Batman" is good shorthand for summing up everything that is wrong with comics, saying "Carl Barks" or "Marvel Masterworks" is good shorthand for everything that is good or at least appreciable for what we yankees do with our funnybooks. It's making a big statement, one that needs no elaboration, with just a simple gesture.

Sometimes, less is more.

[up]No it is clearly Superior do to the fact that it can encompass all the genre's manga and comics do, and can be 10 times as varied, and it varies from books that have one author to books that have many authors. Plus it doesn't have to relay to visual effects to make up for lackluster parts .

[up]It also has tons of schlock, aswell as books made to pander to groups of people (like all the vampire books that were made after Twilight.) For every well made, great book there is, there's another book that's the complete opposite in every way. The only thing that really puts it apart from comics/mangas is that anyone can be succesful at it, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

And books do rely on visuals, it just has to devote a few paragraphs or a whole chapter to describing it, which a comic/manga doesn't.

It's no better than anything else, but it loses points for Twilight.

On Topic: My friend hates Inuyasha and Bleach and associates all of anime with those two (except for Cowboy Bebop).

[up] All I'm saying is books have been around for 1000's of years, comics and manga a little over the last century. Plus having sects of different books that pander to different tastes is a plus not minus in it's favor even if that plus does come from Twilight. That being said books don't have to dumb down the intensity of it's work with pictures and actually requires the reader to use their imagination to visualize instead of laying it out in front of them.

And it is not easy to write novels at all, it is a very difficult to master art form which is slowly dying out do to the dumbing down of a society which replies more on short burst of visuals than intense intellectual thought .

[up][up]You're saying that writing/drawing a good graphic novel isn't a difficult art form?

What's precedent ever done for us?

Sorry, but it takes little more than comprehend language to read comic and manga (and less for tv and animation). Where all the gritty details are shown instead of described.

I dare avid manga/comic readers to describe their environments properly and then compare your results to that of someone who actually reads novels.

[up]No just saying, that writing is no easy art form.

Can't we just say that no art is easy and that they all have their strengths and weaknesses while we enjoy a good cup of tea? Because seriously? Seriously? FUCKING SERIOUSLY?

All I'm saying is books have been around for 1000's of years, comics and manga a little over the last century.

A.K.A. the dumbest excuse for liking something more than something else I've ever heard. What does that have to do with the quality of the books or what they're about? Just because something came first does NOT make it better.

Plus having sects of different books that pander to different tastes is a plus not minus

It would be if it was done to tell a good story, rather than just to make money.

requires the reader to use their imagination to visualize instead of laying it out in front of them.

No, it only lays it out for the reader in a different way. It's the same as me telling you what my friend from school looks like, I can show you a photo and save time, and therefore get to the fucking point.

And it is not easy to write novels at all, it is a very difficult to master art form which is slowly dying out do to the dumbing down of a society which replies more on short burst of visuals than intense intellectual thought.

[up]Well since twilight seems to be the only book that they could think of, I figured I'd throw in someone modern as an example. Since their argument against it seems to be one book that has been around less than a decade.

Honestly, it's funny that you mention Shakespeare, considering he wrote plays, which are meant to be viewed visually. Also, Shakespeare was lower class entertainment in those days. Thridly, there's the Branagh version of Hamlet (I know he has more, but Hamlet's the only one I've seen) and I'd say the quality is comparable to the play in the movie version.

[up][up] No Dostoevsky too. Or Sartre, Camus, Stoppard, Kierkregaard, etc.

Again, literature has been along for much longer than comics or manga - well, as a coherent art form - so it would make sense there would be much more great works as well as horrendous works in literature compared to any other art form. Just because so many more people have spent so much more time on this art form.

But again, every media has its pros and cons and of course everyone has their favorite media.

Niel Gaiman, Johnathan Maberry, Alan Moore, Peter David, Gerard Way, Robert Kirkman, Frank Miller, Phil Hester and Garth Ennis. And last I checked all of them are still alive and have written something in the past 2 decades.

Books are not better and you've said absolutely nothing to prove that they are. For every Philip K. Dick there are tons of shit writers. The sooner you stop having a hard on for them the sooner you'll realize that they are not better nor worse than anything else, but you're so far up your own ass right now, that I doubt that will happen.

In short*
