Oh that sounds super nice. Also I was expecting you to blow up at me for not getting it lol. I am so glad you were nice and patient with me. Living for redemption and to make up wrongdoings is an awesome ending.

Now I REALLY want to watch the new Latin American dub. I felt meh about Scar's end, I felt meh about the show overall. I really wanna see that happen.

This passage from a Tumblr post about Mustang and Hawkeye relates to my opinion on Scar:

Roy has vocally expressed his disgust in this action by saying, "He took the easy way out. What a cowardly bastard."
Roy now sees self-destruction as equal to running away from life and passing one's suffering to those who cared for him.

See again this is what I find so compelling about 2003!Scar. He remains set against the state military to the bitter end, and his final action is kill a bunch of them. Whereas Mangahood!Scar is working with them to rebuild his state. The state they genocided... I don't know has a bad ring to it in my mind.

2003 Anime Scar ended in a very cynical place because he was a much darker take on the character but the anime itself sometimes falls over itself with its navel gazing and wangst. With Scar I think it worked because there felt like this is a good place for his character to eventually wind up, sadly it didn't work as well for a lot of other characters.

Manga Scar of course ends in a more idealistic place, but I felt like it worked after a certain point he is at the "And Then What?" if he goes out in a blaze of glory murdering his genociders and their alchemists does that doesn't mean he has done anything for the plight of his people but only satisfying his own rage and resolves instead to work to make things better hence the symbolism of creation and destruction.

I do understand the apprehension about joining hands with the oppressors to try and make nice message though.

Well I wouldn't call 2003 cynical. I'd call it more in the center of idealism vs cynicism. Is it really very cynical to kill thousands of soldiers of a genocidal expansionist state? It's certainly a dark ending, he's using all those souls to power a essentially a soul machine, and the series isn't immune to humanizing those same soldiers. But he's also doing it to save Alphonse. So there's a Heroic Sacrifice there as well. I would call it more central between Idealism and Cynicism.

I do like how Brotherhood handles it, helps that Roy is in charge and he was tried for war crimes. The entire point was to hold the Amestris state guilty for its actions in the Ishvalan genocide, and Roy managed to succeed.

I still find it hilarious how the 2003 anime had Bradley be Pride and have one of his final acts be strangling Selim to death...and then later on we got the manga reveal for who Pride is.

Manga Pride I definitely liked more than 2003 Pride. Bradley was far more intimidating as Wrath than he was as Pride.

Manga Pride was terrifying. It's one thing to be an arrogant asshole, but having the power to back up said arrogance, and the specific power being based on shadows and slicing through things. He truly felt like an otherworldly demon hiding behind the façade of an innocent boy, not only able to kill at easy but proud of being able to do so.

Scar died in 2003 doing an idealistic thing. He killed the Amestrian soldiers trying to save Alphonse's life after Kimblee transmuted Al's body into a bomb and Ed wasn't around to turn him back, plus he was doing it to stop them from massacring Liore's population. Scar had no idea if it would work given he wasn't an alchemist, but decided he was going to try anyways because he didn't want to see someone else's brother die if he could do something to save them. He decided to take his revenge and try to make it mean something more.

It was still a horrific action, but it's cathartic that he put Kimblee down and his last act was saving someone. 2003 has a recurring life/death juxtaposition thing going on and it's illustrated again with the ending and how death in one world fuels life in another (alchemy isn't always life-giving, but the Homunculi come from humans, for instance). Call it wangsty but I like the cosmic horror elements in 2003 as well.

I prefer 2003 Wrath to Brotherhood Pride. Brotherhood Pride's redemption felt wholly undeserved to me, whereas we got to see that 2003 Wrath was an innocent that got the short end of the stick over and over again and was manipulated into evil. His end in the movie was just tragic, being left as a broken death-seeking shell.

Bradley wasn't all that developed in 2003 though. He was really just a monster to get put down.

I am totally mixing up with the 2003 anime, you'll have to forgive me. I completely forgot the context of Scar's final dance with Kimblee.[lol]

Anime Wrath was a great character but I feel like he was one of the characters in the 2003 series that lacked closure.

Yeah, the movie decided his closure was becoming a Death Seeker after his mom died. Which is incredibly sad.

I wouldn't say Brotherhood Pride is redeemed so much as he is reset. He is no more redeemed than Masayoshi Shido is after his heart being stolen or the Lich is after being turned into a giant baby. The original Pride all but dies after Ed beats him

I mean, the Lich is complicated in that he's a hive mind eldritch being and Sweet-P was a single incarnation of him. But that's besides the point. I dunno, it really bothered me that Pride got to live even if he experienced Death of Personality.

It's clear the writers of Shamballa were big history nerds and wanted to show it, I'll say that much. As a history nerd, I liked the attention to detail.

I kind of wish it was a full season rather than a movie though, because to say the Amestris portions were rushed and the villain was undercooked is a huge understatement.

Yeah I feel like Shamballa would've been so much better had it gotten the Mini Series treatment as opposed to the movie. Would've had more time to go over Winry and Mustang, Izumi and Wrath, maybe more characterization to Gracia... At least Hughes leaves the Nazi party at the end.

Totally Not Mark, known for his character and arc retrospectives on Dragon Ball and its spin-offs, has spent the last month blindly reading and reviewing the Full Metal Alchemist manga. This is the last part of the analysis, but if you are interesting in starting from the beginning:

Ah, because you live in Japan? Yeah all of Mark's content is region locked there due to the way he was content stricken by Toei a long time ago. Youtube restored his content in all regions except Japan as a compromise.

Well here's lowarts video series all in one video where he compares each series to each other and goes over their differences in structure and philosophy (maybe you'll be able to see this one?):

I really liked Lowarts series (like his videos in general).

2003 is very open ended so yay alot of the characters are left open and Co S pretty much rushes through them like candy

Hohenheim and Envy are in the movie just to be gotten rid of

That said Co S was clearly not the Ending people wanted

I want the Brothers united!

Okay!!!

Not like that Mcfly!

What?

It just 03's ending... but worse cause you know whats about to happen in Europe in a 5 years!

______

When it comes to the Sins... I do really like the fucked up twist with Sloth in 03 -Who knew a simple hair style change and coloring could be so effective-

This is an outrage against Luminara!

Seriously, why hasn't anybody compared or made crossover content between Fullmetal Alchemist and the True Lab from Undertale? The True Lab has everything:

  • Dead people brought back to life with terrible results; Flowey is a special case as he's a Golden Flower imbued with the essence of Asriel without a SOUL
  • Fused creatures in constant agony
  • Experimentation on human SOULs to harvest energy
  • A scientist who was put in charge of research by the king and immensely horrified at what happened
