Speaking as a Japanese language student (studying it since 5 years ago), and as a fan of the Tokimeki Memorial series, the (arguably) Codifier of the Osananajimi trope in Japanese media (read: Dating Sim, Visual Novel and Anime):

While not as vindictive as Sackett, I too was, and am not really pleased by the Osananajimi name. It's not as mainstream in Western languages as you want to believe, only hardcore anime fans may know it (so I'm counting out the casual and average anime watchers). It definitely doesn't compare to Tsundere or Yandere in English mainstreamness. Plus, it's a real Tongue Twister and hard to write for non-initiated English audiences.

In short, I support the idea of using a general English name. I do have to agree the proposed names so far aren't terribly attractive either: Harem Childhood Friend has negative connotations, Anime Childhood Friend has the risk of getting the "Anime-only trope" flak, "Childhood Friend Love Interest" is way too close to Childhood Friend Romance, and Childhood Friend As Stock Harem Character is too long to write and has negative connotations.

I've looked at Japanese dictionaries for Osananajimi, and found something interesting: aside from the standard "childhood friend" translation, two of them gave the following alternative translations:

  • "Childhood playmate"
  • "H.T.H." (short for Hometown honey): A childhood friend love interest [who resides in one's hometown].

So, why not picking a little from those alternate translation, and use something like Childhood Honey or Stock Childhood Honey ?
