Pirates of the caribbean?

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

[up][up]Right idea, but no.

[up]No. (Check the clues on the dates.)

The Dies Irae is played by the high strings around the 2:15 mark in this song.

In the finest tradition of Nintendo Hard musical clues, like in the VG Music thread.

The movie...

  • Not part of a series.
  • Not animated.
  • Made within the last 20 years.
    • Not made within the last 10 years.
    • Not made within the last 15 years—and I'll answer no more questions about the date until the game's progressed a little.
  • Big-budget.
  • It is released by a major studio.
    • American.
    • Not Disney, but arguably it's associated with Disney.
    • Not associated with Dreamworks.
    • Not Columbia.
    • Not Fox.
    • Not Universal.
    • Not New Line.
    • Not Warner Brothers.
    • Not Buena Vista.
    • Not Touchstone.
  • Not a historical movie.
    • Events depicted could happen in real life.
    • Not based on a true story.
  • Rated PG-13 or above.
    • R-rated.
  • Not...

The music...

  • Is available as part of a soundtrack.
  • is not on the Crowning Music Of Awesome pages, but the film is.
    • Composer has his own page/folder under the CMuoA category.
    • Composer is primarily known for film scores.
    • Composer is not...
      • John Williams.
      • Danny Elfman.
        • The composer is Hans Zimmer.
        • Zimmer composed the score; he wasn't just the executive music director.
  • Musical guesses:

Was it Touchstone? (the studio, that is)

No.

(By this time, given the chronology, the huge list of studios that didn't produce the film, and the fact that it's Hans Zimmer, you guys should be able to zero in on the film, or at least get very close to it.)

Hans Zimmer did a hell of a lot between 1991 and 1996...

I have a list of all the films he scored/composed and I have a pretty big list left.

Was he the composer? (as opposed to executive score producer)

Yes, he did. Something like thirty or so films. You can start by crossing out all the films produced by the studios I've mentioned, all the Rom Coms and based-on-a-true-story films, and such. That should narrow the field considerably.

Plus, the music itself is a hint, if you bothered to click on the link. Dies Irae is a pretty foreboding piece, after all.

In response to the edit: yes, he was.

Nope. (And yes, although The Rock doesn't fulfill all of the criteria, it is closer to the correct answer than most of the previous guesses.)

Hey, hey. You haven't guessed the song yet!

(Besides, as much as I admire the Coasties, I'm just a college student. Armchair Warrior, that's me.)

Would it be the theme song? Roll Tide, I believe.

It's not Roll Tide, although that's easily the most recognizable song from the soundtrack. Also, Youtube links will be required.

(You know my initial hint? If you have some basic knowledge about music, here's where it'll come in handy: as long as you could recognize the instruments in question and the Dies Irae...)

I wouldn't connect what I'm listening to to some sheet music successfully in a million years, and yes, I actually did play an instrument at one point.

My best remaining guess would be 1sq.

You got it.

1SQ from Crimson Tide. Hear those violins around 2:17 or so? That's the Dies Irae theme, used since the Medieval era to signify death or the Apocalypse—appropriately for a nuclear submarine and a potential WWIII scenario.

You have no idea how long I spent comparing the results of "Dies Irae Strings" and Crimson Tide music. to try to get that down.

Gimme a bit to think of which track to use.
