Dunsten Checks In- because what's better to review than a movie with an orangutan? A movie with an Orangutan, George from Seinfield and the Not!Claw from My Best Friends Wedding.

The Critic. Full stop. And maybe a general "The Disney Afternoon" episode.

But both those were good!

[up] Why does this always happen? People were freaking out aaages ago when he said he was going to do Follow That Bird and they still do it. He. Doesn't. Hate. Everything.

[up]Then why is it that nearly all of the movies he reviews are bad?

emeriin Since: Jan, 2001
#30: Mar 3rd 2011 at 11:01:49 AM

There's Guilty Pleasure stuff, So Bad, It's Good movies, tributes, Old vs. New, stuff he's liked but can still make fun of and originally he was going to say The Secret Of NIHM 2 wasn't all that bad until Rob convinced him to go epic ending. A tribute to Disney Afternoon sounds perfectly enjoyable.

[up][up]Because it's how he got his start and fans expect it of him?

He's still done some positive (or neutral) tribute episodes, like Nickelodeon, Gargoyles, and Animaniacs.

Groovy.

Considering how much he seems to just hate Matthew Broderick on principle, I'd like to see him do an Old Versus New of one of his best movies - The Producers.

Matthew Broderick doesn't emote? "MY BLANKET! MY BLUE BLANKET!" "I'm wet, and I'm in pain, and I'M STILL HYSTERICAL!"

And I still don't get why people seem to hate Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Can we get a lock for this thread? Doug will never read this thread, and he has an entire forum for requests at tgwtg.com

If this thread is supposed to be hypothetical "I'd like him to review this, even though he never will", then a better thread title is necessary.

...well, I don't think anyone was expecting Doug to read this. It doesn't need to have a just for fun justification in the title.

I'd like him to review more TV shows. It seems that he's only focusing on films these days. Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills might be too similar to Power Rangers, but I'd like to see him take a shot at it anyway.

TV shows are much more work, because there's more of stuff to watch. Remember that he only has a week to write, film and edit each episode.

If I could request anything from the NC, it would be The Mouse and His Child. Pure Nightmare Fuel that thoroughly traumatized me as a child (the thought of that wind-up toy lost at the bottom of the sea still gives me the chills).

Oh man. I have so many kneejerk reactions to this thread.

Oddly I second Ultimatum's suggestion of reviewing The Black Cauldron, if only in part due to its "notoriety" as one of Disney's biggest flops. (For the record I don't recall watching it in its entirety as a kid, though I am aware of its origins e.g. it being made during the time Disney tried capitalizing on the "movies based on Fantasy novels" trend at the time.)

On a related note, it would be pretty cool if the Critic did more reviews of some of the lesser-profile Disney Animated Canon films, like Oliver And Company or The Great Mouse Detective. Heck, there are enough of them out there that maybe he can do a Disney reviews month, which would also be a good opportunity for a Disney Afternoon retrospective.

@Gr3mlinify: As one of maybe three people in the world who adored Atlantis: The Lost Empire enough to rank in my Top 5 DAC films, I personally take offense at that comparison. (Besides, I hear it's more apt to compare it to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind... or 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea tongue)

As for my personal wish list of things for the Critic to review (just for kicks and giggles):

  • The Chipmunk Adventure
  • the live-action Richie Rich movie (BTW, I wonder whatever happened to Jonathan Hyde? He also starred in Jumanji and he seemed to be everywhere back in the nineties.)
  • some of Jim Carrey's better-known films, like The Mask or Ace Ventura
  • Mrs Doubtfire
  • he mentioned not being a huge fan of the Flintstones in his review of the live-action movie, so I'm curious about his thoughts on other classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons as well. I would sell my liver for an Old Vs. New devoted to Scooby Doo or Jonny Quest, but I'm not holding my breath.

The Brave Little Toaster. Not to trash, since I actually think it's a pretty well put together film, it's just filled with Nightmare Fuel and it would be fun to see his reactions to how messed up it is.

Clifford. Not the big red dog, but the 1994 (actually 1991) movie with Martin Short and Charles Grodin. If he thought the pranks in Little Monsters were sadistic,,

@ Mr. AHR

Technically his review of Gordy and the Other Animated Titanic movies were reviews that focused on the fact that they were rip-offs (and they sucked). If he can do Old vs. New and Rip-off reviews, than why not review comparisons?

@ North Raider,

I love Atlantis too, but I kept feeling like there were some odd similarities between it and Avatar. So many people saw Avatar as a rip off of Fern Gully, but I think that if it ripped off any one movie, it would have been Atlantis. Despite it having a small cult following, it is not well known in most circles. Perfect for someone to steal and idea from (if that were the case). Considering that Cameron reportedly started Avatar's more serious pre-production circa 2001/2002, this would surprise me even less.

Besides, this thread isn't a serious request thread (is it?), IIRC its just a place to throw some ideas around.

Chill guys tongue

Clifford sounds tailor made for Critic. I’ve never seen it but the movie is supposed to be pure pain. If he thought North was bad...

Even better, Clifford has a small role by fred savage's brother Ben. i can see the critic going "cant a Savage be in a GOOD movie for a change?"<shot of randy savage in spider-man>"He's not even related to them!"

[up][up][up] Oh phew, and here I thought you were accusing Atlantis of ripping off Avatar tongue

I'm probably just splitting hairs at this point, but I never saw anything to compare between those two except maybe in terms of the Broad Strokes carryover of the White Man's Burden theme and minor cinematography stuff like the lighting and color palettes used, and even those I find highly tenuous connections. It's probably just a YMMV issue: in my mind I always imagined some much more suspicious similarities existing between Treasure Planet and Titan A.E. since they're both MacGuffin-driven space opera/Coming-of-Age hybrids.

Honestly, if NC made a whole episode which focuses on mocking Avatar, I'd probably find whoever gave him the idea and kick them in the teeth.

Remember his Video Game Confessions episode on Duke Nukem which had nothing to do with Duke Nukem and was instead just another excuse to take a potshot at Avatar?

*grumblegrumble* And people keep telling me that Avatar is NOT UNPOPULAR.

I actually liked Avatar and thought it was ok for what it was. I don't hate it or anything.

@North Raider Wow, Treasure Planet and Titan A.E. that's a pretty good comparison. I'm sure that someone, somewhere is claiming it has something to do with some Bluth-Disney conspiracy.
