A cape vs a Trenchcoat are very different.. different enough that the image could help getting the point across that its included in this especially with they are both completely different reasons as a trenchcoat is to blend in and a cape is to be flashy like its use in modern Knight in Shining Armor type in things aimed at girls aka Shōjo stuff.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Modern knight in shining armour really isn't this trope. Perhaps we should split those off if they have a different narrative reason. This trope is more about making a superhero look like a private detective and emphasize that he's just an average joe Badass Normal. I mean, this trope exists entirely to emphasize how mundane the crime fighter is.
What you're talking about is the direct opposite.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickYeah I was just saying how the Cape hat and mask are used in different things and the trope right now even states that its the complete opposite of trenchcoat hat and mask.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Perhaps we should split them into a different trope then. It makes the trope rather bipolar otherwise. Split by personality and role more than wardrobe since you could probably manage knight in shining armour in the right coat.

Zorro is the Ur-Example of it too, in the dashing flashy kind of way.
He's not. That's The Scarlet Pimpernel, but he's still very good. I think we should make a trope repair shop thread to split the two.

He's not, but he's the Trope Codifier for the masked hero in general, inspiring The Green Hornet, The Crimson Avenger and Batman.
Interesting sidenote, Zorro originally wore a completely different outfit, including a poncho. The memetic outfit was created for the film, then retroactively included in the written stories.

Oh >< feel like an idiot (his picture go brought up in the Cool Mask thread and saw the Cape Hat Mask and thought it was)

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Well I opened a repair shop. and for the record I am perfectly fine with [1]
◊ this one I just wanted all options of the trope presented.
I love the CA not only because he's a fairly obscure hero, but because that image is part one of one of the BEST gags of JLU.
Mr Terrific: I Found you some backup, they are on their way!
Green Arrow: Alright! You wanted to face Super Man, now you gotta deal with...
transporter activates. Speedy and Crimson Avenger appear
Green Arrow: disapointed ...The Crimson Avenger and my old sidekick.
Speedy: Ex-Partner.
Green Arrow: ...Speedy do we have to do this now?

I'm not a fan of the Crimson Avenger, simply because I think his coat looks too flashy with the red color.
