Kiyohiko's mind watched through his glassed eyes as the girl he vaguely remembered from somewhere said something to him. He couldn't understand what she said, but that was okay; his head inclined itself in a small nod, which appeared to be answer enough for her.

Not that it mattered anyway. What did? What would it have changed if his body hadn't responded? What would it change if the girl before him suddenly disappeared? What would it change if he, himself, were to simply vanish as well?

The boy was only barely aware of his own name and his own existence. All he knew was that nothing mattered. And it felt good.

I don't think Natsuhi's going to get anything useful out of Kiyohiko just tonight, I still want to have him spend some more time in his fugue.

Please be gentle with me.

"...Kiyohiko?" Natsuhi's voice began to rise in pitch, the concern in it changing to desperation. "Kiyohiko? Oh god. Kiyohiko, please talk to me!" But in spite of her pleas, the boy just stared at her, glassy-eyed.

I can't just leave him here like this. What should I do?

Taking his hand, Natsuhi tried to get him to stand up. He did. He seemed compliant enough. In fact, he seemed completely unconcerned about everything around him. Natsuhi began to lead him out of the restaurant. "Don't worry, Kiyohiko. I'll take care of you." The panic in her voice was gone now. Determination filled her. She didn't even care that Kiyohiko probably couldn't understand anything she was saying. "Her wish was for me, but I think that more than anyone else, you were the one she loved. I'm not going to let what she did be for nothing. Come on, Kiyohiko. Let's get you home."

Puppeteering Natsuhi like you wouldn't freaking believe, but I wanted to get this over with.

Natsuhi took Kiyohiko's hand and walked him back to the Takumi estate. This was no simple task, as the household was almost on the opposite side of the entire ward, and the walk took a little over an hour at Kiyohiko's (or what remained of him) sluggish pace. It was getting hard to see by the time the two arrived at the mansion's gate: Natsuhi had to fumble a bit before finding the buzzer on the wall.

A young man in a deep charcoal business suit opened the gate nearly instantly. "Yes, how may I he— young master?!"

Natsuhi jumped back as the man dashed out of the gate and grabbed Kiyohiko by his shoulders. It's not like she'd intended to hide his condition, but she certainly hadn't expected them to notice it this soon. The man gave Kiyohiko a quick once-over and then turned his head towards Natsuhi. "Miss, what happened?"

Natsuhi took a deep breath. She'd worried if she could deliver her rehearsed story in a convinvingly shaken manner, but when she begun, she realized that she still was shaken.

"There was an accident, he wasn't hurt, but... a friend of his died... he's been like that ever since."

The young man frowned — out of concern, rather than doubt, she hoped.

"Did you two talk to the police already? Did they just let him go like this?"

Though Natsuhi flinched, she'd already prepared herself for this question. "N-no... I thought I had to get him home, away from there as fast as possible."

The man sighed and let go of Kiyohiko's shoulders, turning completely towards Natsuhi. He still kept one eye on the boy to ensure he wouldn't topple all of a sudden. "I see. Thank you for your trouble, miss", he bowed deeply. "We'll take care of him; however, it would be best if you went to speak with the police right away."

The man turned and put his arm around Kiyohiko's shoulders, slowly guiding him inside the mansion. Just under the arch of the gate, he made to turn around and call to Natsuhi: "Oh, and might I have your name, miss? The Master and Mistress might wish to express their gratitude at a—"

but Natsuhi was already gone, running away as quickly and silently as possible. Once Kiyohiko's parents found out that neither the media nor the police knew anything about this "accident", they'd want to interrogate her. And Natsuhi wanted to leave them as few clues as possible.

Please be gentle with me.

Fortunately, the diner was not too far from where Natsuhi lived, so she was able to stop there quickly to retrieve her bike without going too far out of her way. Still, she had to walk almost all the way across the ward again, so it was quite late by the time she got back, although she somehow managed to make it in before the 9:00 curfew her parents had set. She was very glad about that, as she was completely exhausted from going back and forth over the entire ward on foot.

But in spite of how physically exhausted she was, her mind wouldn't stay quiet. She kept picturing Kiyohiko's blank, zombie-like expression. Will he be okay by himself? Somehow, I don't think his father will be able to understand. He loves his son, but it's a distant love. And, she kept picturing her sister's face, a face she'd never see again. Not coming back. Not coming back. 'I'll vanish forever. They'll think I've gone missing.' She did what she had to. She saved me and fought for us all. No regrets, right? Right?

...not coming back. She's gone forever.

Natsuhi spent the entire night in a restless state, half-awake, half asleep, confused and terrified by strange waking dreams.

Natsumi lay still in her bed. She had spent the entire afternoon punching buttons on her phone. She had probably left an hour's worth of messages on Akira's voice mail. When she gave up hope of Akira answering, she had moved onto texting. She had sent dozens of messages, trying anything and everything that could possibly get Akira to respond.

Nothing.

She barely even heard the kitchen door slam.

"What the hell happened in here!?"

Torako shoved Natsumi's door open.

"Are you alright? There's broken glass and blood all over the kitchen."

"I'm fine." Natsumi's voice was muffled by her pillow.

"You obviously aren't." Torako sat on the edge of the bed and put a hand on her sister's shoulder. "Is this about that girl you met at school? It's okay. I'm not going to make fun of you. Is it about her?"

Natsumi swallowed.

No point in trying to hide it anymore.

She nodded slowly.

"What happened?"

Natsumi was silent.

"Come on." Torako gave her a gentle shake. "It's not good if you keep it bottled up like this..."

The words stuck in Natsumi's throat as she forced them out.

"She...she said she doesn't want to see me anymore."

"Do you know why?"

"I..I think so."

"Why do you think?"

Because she doesn't want me around when she's fighting witches after we saw our friends get killed. And if she realized that I ruined the chance of fixing anything by killing that thing...

"I..don't want to talk about it."

"Alright." Torako leaned over and gave her sister an awkward hug. "If you want to talk or anything, I'll be in the kitchen, okay?"

Natsumi nodded sullenly as Torako quietly shut the door.

What am I supposed to do?

Oh man gonna puppeteer Saya for a little bit hope you don't mind Savvy

It had been over an hour, but Shizuka's phone didn't receive any more calls or texts. Still, she waited at the dining table, her eyes continuing to peer over at the front door.

S-she'll be home soon. I k-know she will... j-just... any second...

"Shizuka-chan."

"Y-yes...?" Shizuka's weary gaze turned to face the sound of the voice. Saya, now dressed to turn in for the night, looked at her surrogate daughter with a concerned look on her face.

"Maybe you should turn in for the night." She gave the trembling girl a comforting smile to help ease her. "Some sleep might help you feel better."

Shizuka shook her head. "N-No, it's a-alright... I-it's not like I h-have anything important to d-do tomorrow... B-besides... I w-want to be h-here... and s-see A-Akira-sempai for myself w-when she comes home... S-So I... know that she's safe..."

Saya let out a brief sigh but then patted Shizuka on the head before taking a seat across from her. "Alright. But, I'll stay here and wait with you, okay?"

Akira's phone kept ringing. Erratically, unpredictably, but there was always another call. Akira ignored them all, hating herself for doing so, knowing what Natsumi was feeling. She felt the same way. If I have to chase her away to save her life, I'll do it, she thought, swallowing hard. Aside from the quiet reverberations of her footsteps, no sound interrupted her thoughts; everybody but the habitual night-dwellers were at home, asleep in their beds. Akira wanted to break down the doors to every house in the city and scream at them. Didn't they know two girls had died today, for no reason at all? Why didn't they know? And they would never know.

Akira turned the key softly in the door and stepped into the shoeroom. Unexpected brightness, the glazed-glass lamp over the table, rounded the corner, and Akira's eyes widened as she realized she had forgotten to dismiss her outfit. She changed back into her casual clothes, the grey light solidifying around her finger seconds before Shizuka dashed around the corner and grabbed her in a hug. "A-Akira-sempai," she murmured, burying her face in Akira's shoulder. "I-I'm glad you're alright..."

Saya, standing a few feet back from the two, gave Akira a smile that was equal parts relief, concern and question - the sort that could be put off for now, not forever. That wasn't a conversation Akira was looking forward to. "Hi, Shizuka-chan, Mom," she said, smiling tiredly. "I'm sorry I'm back so late... I took a bit of a walk. There was... there was an accident," she said quietly, putting her arms around Shizuka as she spoke to her mother. "Two... two of our friends were killed." She closed her eyes, feeling them start to sting. "They..."

Saya enfolded both of the girls in a surprisingly forceful hug, resting her head on theirs. "I'm sorry, you two," she said quietly. "I won't tell you it's okay, and I won't say it gets easier to think about... but you're here, and you're safe. Call me selfish, but that's what's important to me." Saya wasn't a particularly strong woman, but her arms were iron bands around her daughters, and Akira finally allowed the tension in her to disappear. Her knees gave out, and she slumped into Shizuka's embrace, asleep.

I'll wake her back up when it's time for their heart-to-heart, Star, worry not.

It's been fun.

"A-Ah."

As Akira slumped into her body, Shizuka's heart jumped for a moment and she pulled her face back just a bit to look at her. Then, she breathed a sigh of relief at Akira's shut eyes and slow, steady breath - her senior had simply fallen asleep.

"Akira-sempai..."

Shizuka laid her head back on Akira's shoulder as she tightened her embrace just a bit more.

That's right... Even though I wanted Sempai to comfort me while I was suffering... she's suffering too... I shouldn't be selfish... I... should be there to comfort her too...

Kei was sat on her bed, knees pulled tight against her chest. She'd seen what the other girls had done to the creature, and what they'd said.

Did I... Did I really make the right choice?

She looked at her Soul Gem in her hands, which glowed with the same soft yellow light that it always did when it wasn't sensing anything.

"Yup. That tasted purple."

As night wraps itself around Imaizumi ward, a young girl sits silently on top of a skyscraper, studying the city around her.

There are some things she takes particular note of — subtle, small things, mostly. Things she is not accustomed to. She wonders what sort of girls she will meet here. Wonders if she can help them against what's coming. She hopes so. She's tired of killing and death. So tired that it's like a great rusted ball of iron inside her, weighing her down. But there's something else inside her, too, something even greater than that weight, counteracting it. She looks out over the vast city alight in the dark, and knows that she is closer than ever to finding what she's looking for.

Hello, world, she thinks, and she leaps off the building.

With the help of Saya, Shizuka managed to carefully move Akira upstairs and tuck her into her own bed. After wishing her mother good night, Shizuka headed for her own room.

Minutes passed, but she couldn't fall asleep as easily as her sempai had. Staring up at the ceiling for just a moment, Shizuka got back up and gathered her blanket and pillows before quietly entering Akira's room, trying not to disturb her.

"D-don't worry," she whispered, not expecting a response back. "I-I'll sleep on the floor tonight..."

"It's okay," Akira whispered back as Shizuka arranged her things on the floor. Startled, the quiet girl looked over at Akira; she looked tired, but she was awake, and her gaze was alert and steady. "I'm sorry I worried you," she said, propping herself up on her elbows. "I just... I had to say some terrible things to Natsumi-chan," she continued, looking very interested in the patterning on the edge of her blanket. "And I didn't... really feel like coming straight home after that..."

It's been fun.

"W-why?" Once Shizuka had laid out all her things, she sat down at the foot of Akira's bed. "What did you tell h-her...?"

"I..." Akira looked away, unwilling to meet Shizuka's eyes. "I told her... that I didn't want to be around her anymore, and that I would ignore her if she tried to talk to me in school... she called me so many times while I was out, but I didn't answer her..." As she spoke, Akira contracted into a ball, pulling her knees up to her chest and pressing her lips to her knees. She had yet to put her glasses back on, and her eyes looked distant and empty without the lenses. "I already want to apologize, but I can't! If I'm... with her, she'll be in danger. She'll die, just like Nanami!" she hissed, fingers digging viciously into her stockings. "Shizuka-chan..."

Emo!Akira! Woo!

It's been fun.

"I-It's alright..."

Cautiously, Shizuka wrapped her arms around Akira and held her in a gentle, almost timid embrace. Shizuka worried that Akira would be able to tell she was scared about not being able to comfort her.

"I-I understand. I-If she's safe, t-then... I-I'd do the same..."

As Shizuka tried to help her sempai, a thought wondered into her head.

Isn't this what I wanted?

I... didn't want A-Akira-sempai to ignore me for Natsumi-san... a-and now... she won't...

For a moment, Shizuka looked away from Akira's empty eyes as her hug tightened just a bit more.

W-why... did I have to think that...

"I-it'll be o-okay, Akira-sempai... s-somehow..."

For a moment, it seemed like Akira would turn in to Shizuka's embrace; but she didn't. "Thanks, Shizuka-chan," she murmured, putting a hand on Shizuka's. "I... thanks." She didn't say anything else, but Shizuka could tell she hadn't gone back to sleep. She sat, still and quiet, looking at nothing at all.

Why is Akira coming out so emo? Honestly. I guess this is how she wants to be, though...

It's been fun.

Shizuka said nothing for a few moments, quietly holding onto Akira as she gathered her thoughts. Then, she pulled back a bit, keeping her hands on Akira's shoulders.

"A-Akira-sempai. I... I think that..."

Shizuka struggled a bit, but she managed to face herself towards Akira's eyes.

"N-Natsumi-san would be safer... if you stayed by her side."

Akira stiffened up, but she turned her head to look at Shizuka. "I met Natsumi-chan in first grade," she said quietly. "She didn't sit near me, but I knew who she was - in a general sense, anyway. We were never really friends; we didn't even have friends in common." She took a breath. "For eight years, nothing ever happened to any of us. And now, in the four days since I made that stupid wish, she's been attacked - her sister was nearly killed... all because she got involved with me."

Causation fail!
