It's DLC in a game with no story relevance...
It's...the Lost World.
The Sonic Adventure one was just a random cameo.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I do! My siblings where obsessed with that game and desperately wanted a copy.
We eventually got it and nobody got too far. I think it kinda sucked.
I remember a review that said the character designs "Wouldn't look out of place in Sonic" but given sonic humans are less cartoons I feel it would and just lead to further questions.
You are not alone.Wow, I missed the Amy discourse.
My main thoughts on it is that removing Amy's crush on Sonic would be akin to making Minnie not Mickey's love interest.
i.e. you're just removing the very core idea the character was built around. I get people haven't been a fan of how that was handled through the mid-2000s, but the solution isn't to just gut it out.
That's not what happened. I don't think Frontiers says is saying Amy isn't in love with Sonic anymore. Its just expanding Amy's personality further; In my opinion, in a very natural way for her.
We didn't NEED her crush on Sonic to be the focus of her storyline in the game, because we already know that.

Now that Amy's gone from the games forever.
I would recommend reading the latest IDW(s).
Amy still exists in that and is the best character.

Not "Lost World has not story relevance", the DLC has none.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Yeah, it's weird.
I wish it was a little more concrete what she actually wanted.
Like just going around helping people is a pretty generic goal.
Helping people by spreading her love every where is just vague.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Pretty sure long-time Sega fans have been wanting Billy and others to pal around for a long time, hence why guest sega characters like Super Monkey Ball, Billy, and Nights tend get included as guests in Sonic-focused spin-offs, and why Archie did a whole crossover with Sonic and co interacting with Billy and Panzer Dragoon.
Sonic even appeared in Billy Hatcher. The synergy Sega and Sonic Team had between their franchises used to be a very attractive factor.
There are plenty of people who would love Billy to appear in a Sonic game. Billy is more of the unusable pie-in-the-sky character since his franchise didn't get a newer entry like Nights did.
The Amy video makes a snide comment saying that only IGN reviewers had a problen with Sonic's friends back in the day. IGN didn't make the Sonic cycle meme my friend.
Reminds of the time of someone saying that the only reason that 3d Sonic games received hate was because of Game Grumps playthroughs. Its pretty clearly someone who wasn't part of history trying to look back and contexualize what happened.

My opinion of Frontiers's characterizations for Amy and Tails is going to depend a lot on where they go from here. Knux, it should be noted, is the only one who really turns in a strong performance by getting to demonstrate a depth of knowledge and education he rarely shows in other games. They have him here talking expertly about the ancient cultures of Angel Island and drawing conclusions based on archaeological observations of the ruins' architecture, and that's a side of Knuckles that both a) makes perfect sense and yet b) he never gets to demonstrate.
In a vacuum, Knuckles is the only character here who feels like he's treading new ground.
But as far as the three of them and Sonic go, Frontiers has a clear objective in mind. Specifically, they're all growing up and moving forward in their lives. Knuckles wants to leave Angel Island and see the world. Tails wants to step out of Sonic's shadow and become his own person. Amy wants to "share love with the world" ie. meet other people and see new things. And Sonic, who's always been doing his thing, is excited and supportive of them. He's happy to see them go and looks forward to meeting the people they're going to become.
I swear, Roger Craig Smith is even pitching Sonic's voice a little deeper to further highlight that they're all growing up.
These characters end the game ready to step out of the things that defined their childhoods and start figuring out who they're going to be as adults. That's. Exciting. But.
Also.
Like. We've been here before. We've seen Amy leave her infatuation with Sonic behind and start developing her life outside of him. We've seen Tails come into his own and become a hero independent of Sonic. These are roads already trekked; It's just that the post-'06 freakout, mass firing of the entire cast, and torching of the storylines that had been ongoing caused Tails to regress to Sonic's Little Buddy and Amy to get fired with the rest for a while. So now they have to start over and do it again.
The game's even self-aware of that. Tails at one point asks Sonic if he's a burden and Sonic's like, "Uh, you remember how you used to be characterized as a strong, independent character for a while, right?" It's one of those weird conversations that feels more like the writer trying to talk directly to the fandom than an actual chat that the characters would have. One character going "Am I a bad character?" and the other providing a list of the character's Coolest Franchise Moments is not organic dialogue.
So. Like. It's cool that Frontiers ends by making that promise, but whether or not it works is going to depend on what the next games do with these characters. Right now, all we have are promises.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think its worth asking if Amy's boy-crazy personality liked among Sonic's targeted demographic? Amy feels like she's a representation of a boy's POV of the opposite sex. Sonic not wanting to do anything with Amy is supposed to resonate with young players not wanting hang around girls with their cooties and unrelatable interests. In that case, I don't know how much mileage you can get with that kind of characterization.
If Sega were more willing to use Blaze the cat I wouldn't be surprised if she became more popular than her. Amy's really only in the position she's in due to being grandfathered in by Sonic CD.

I mean, I feel like Amy was designed like that because they didn't want Sonic to have a traditional love interest. Instead, he'd have someone who had to follow him around. It's moreso supposed to represent his free-spirited nature.
SATAM/Archie's Sonic that had a family and ties to one place in particular couldn't really carry the same dynamic, which is why Sally's the primary love interest and Archie's attempts to include Amy there didn't work as well.

I mean, there have to date been two mainline Sonic games that have had NiGHTs levels with zero consequences whatsoever.
If your aim is to insert reference, it's not super difficult to do so in a series as light as Sonic is.
