That's from the Japanese script only.
Part of it is that for the West 06's notorious release came out at such a bad time, that its basically enshrined it in the popular gaming culture as an ET like massive failure. Neither are in fact the worst games ever by any stretch, but 06's near memetic status as a disaster for the franchise likely had SOA (and especially the social media teams) feeling like the only thing they could do was be self-deprecating about it.
Moreover, while the game itself has had some rehabilitation for its ambitions within hardcore and/or younger gaming circles, it's still just seen as that one really awful Sonic game by casuals/non-fans. Even the merits of Project 06 and how it might demonstrate the real potential of the title are things that rarely go beyond the fandom itself.

Tbh I actually think a story actually exploring shadows relationship with his Archnemesis Dad could be kinda interesting. Like actually seeing the two interact would be nice.

sonic 06 is special in the gaming community as it was a failure of a name brand series and not a one off so both fans and non-fans look at it as some gauge of a bad game even though other games as of now can easily take the crown.
Between becoming familiar with Superman 64 and Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing around 2005, and Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly preceding Sonic 06 by a few years and being FAR more guilty of the issues that 06 has yet not having a comparable reputation, I just feel like 06's reputation was throughly overblown. The only difference was that it was a Game Cube/X Box underbaked platformer doing that on the 360 and PS 3.
The fandom was up in arms a year before with the Shadow game, and not for the tired memes of today. Hell, in mid-2005, the fandom was convinced that Heroes was the nadir of the franchise, that anybody who liked it was trolling, and that Adventure 3 would solve stuff.
And hell, Adventure 2's review scores in Game Spot, comparing the DC and GC version, with SIX MONTHS of difference, are weird as hell.
But yeah, the mid-00s were quite toxic in general.
It's that whole thing of infamy spreading so far and so quick that the original context is not only lost, but the actual piece of media isn't even experienced after a point because people simply know it's awful. What it embodies becomes more important than the product itself.
It's the same with the Atari ET game. In the grand scheme and when actually played, it's not a completely awful release; terribly unintuitive and a waste of license sure, but the era pumped out worse. It just so happened to be the game that broke the camel's back when it came to Atari flooding the market with too much product in general that it became infamous as being emblematic of that company's mistakes. Same with 06 being seen as symbolic of already existing issues within the franchise and a culmination of the IP being mishandled.
Whether that's an accurate assessment is secondary to it being very easily accepted and spread within an internet age that was always looking for attractive narratives and punching bags.

I just hope that Shadow's gonna be more than just a reskin with slight differences. I believe I saw him using Chaos Control, let us utilize all his chaos powers. Just make sure they're actually functional this time.
Didn't the website blurb say "using all of Shadows powers to prove he's the Ultimate Lifeform" or something like that?
Isn't Mephiles Sonic's arch-enemy given how his whole plot was 'kill Sonic'?
The Protomen enhanced my life.
Shadow was the one who trapped him in the scepter, and the one whose form he copied.
Sonic was an obstacle and little else comparatively.
Yeah, all Mephiles really needed from Sonic was to have him die so Elise can cry and unleash Iblis. Otherwise they have about as much of a personal connection as one does to a fly.

"That we continue to persist at all is a testament to our faith in one another."Sonic and Mephiles never interact...
You can't be an arch-nemesis if the main character doesn't even know you exist.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Sonic does very slightly know that Mephiles exists. After Crisis City, Sonic Tails and Knuckles manage to peek on Mephiles sending Silver and Blaze to the past.
But they have no context for who he is, just noting that he looks like Shadow. And... Yeah. I think that's the only time Sonic is even slightly aware of Mephiles.

Sonic Unleashed status.
Eggmanland is hard. Fucking hard. Eggman may be a loser in the long run, but this level it's possibly the only time in the series he ever threatened the player due to how fucking difficult this place is. I lost 20 (plus a lot of in-level lives) in this place and got a game over.
Jesus Christ.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.On the bright side, you got some banger music in Eggmanland!
"That we continue to persist at all is a testament to our faith in one another."Believe me, you think Eggmanland itself is hard? Would you believe me if I told there it has Hot Dog missions? Yeah, even for a huge HD Unleashed fan like myself, I would never go through that. Eggmanland is already possibly the hardest part of any Sonic game before pre patch TFH, imagine having to go through all of that without dying. Multiple times.
No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!
