They don't own that...but they've never had trouble paying for the rights to use music from those games.

Beat all the bosses of Sonic Frontiers, all of whom are notoriously bad damage sponges and time sinks, in a row in just over six minutes?
I'm aware I'm a bit unique among players in that I found the bosses of this game to be straight up unbearable, such that the idea of willingly doing a boss rush of this game makes me cringe, but even so I think the thought of doing them all over and over again while somehow whittling them down to a six minute playtime takes this DLC would take anyone far past an occasionally poorly conceived slog and into unfulfilling busywork.
This isn't the first time I've thought "what were they thinking?" here, but it's definitely the most I've thought "what were they thinking?"

Brad Buxer was mentioned (though not by name) last page.
His and Michael Jackson's involvement in Sonic 3 is pretty well chronicled, to the extent that people are willing to disclose.
As far as MJ goes, the general consensus is this: he was definitely involved, and had an extensive history working with SEGA that stretched for years onwards. He wasn't a lead composer, though. And any contributions he did or didn't make don't have his name attached, by his choice at least, and potentially by SEGA's. Potential reasons given are his dissatisfaction with the sound quality, or his legal battles at the time. In any case, after his death, the story trended at various points. Additionally, Sonic 3 started seeing a lot fewer ports, and more ports with changed soundtracks, after Jackson's death. Coincidentally, the Estate of Michael Jackson, which manages his property, has been a bit of a minefield when it comes to who can say what about what.
As for the DLC, I didn't get the chance to keep playing it today. But I will say that the decision to not have Knuckles and Tails climb and fly freely under their own power isn't a choice I'd have made. As far as the difficulty goes, I figure at this point the devs should've earned enough goodwill with this game that fans can hope that'll be adjusted soon given the feedback. But if something's not fundamentally broken but is just hard, well... I'm not gonna say "git gud", but I will say that's not exactly a big problem.

Despite the ranting I don't exactly mind the problems with the difficulty either, mostly because Frontiers reminds me a lot of Unleashed.
Like Unleashed it's a "first try" game, and it shows - especially in the difficultly. They're still getting used to how the heck the new gameplay system works and how it make it satisfyingly challenging.
Much like Unleashed, this leads to a lot of stuff that isn't really hard so much as frustratingly designed: where don't work as simply as they are apparently intended to leading to challenges not as doable as intended, or difficulty tricks that are easy to implement but obnoxious to the player, or simply big experiments for difficulty that seem okay on paper but don't really work in execution.
But that's what this game is for. Much like the games that came after Unleashed, I'm expecting future games using the Frontiers' format to be more refined and have a better understanding of what they and the players can do with the gameplay.
Well, Tails not being able to fly freely on his own power is pretty much moot when you combine the Cyclone with the infinity cyloop to get unlimited boost.
All said, I think tower 4 was the low point, a fundamentally bad idea with weird jumps between air currents and tiny rails.
My musician pageI am the only one who felt bad for Supreme?
It trapped the End for eons, became its puppet which clearly caused him pain, and unfortunately Sonic had to destroy it to destroy The End. Especially as we know of its pilot sacrificing itself to seal that moon to begin with.
At least in the base ending, Sage did a Heroic Sacrifice with it. Here, he is just straight up destroyed by Sonic.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.Tails is able to fly on his own, just not for long. You know, like usual.
Yeah, Supreme just gets all the business. Guess THE END was vindictive.
Although, there's a very interesting difference between the base game ending and Another Story ending. Super Sonic busting through THE END'S physical form via Supreme left it healthy enough to try and self destruct as a viable tactic. Whereas Cyber Super Sonic being shot through it clearly did WAY MORE damage and neutered that tactic.
From Character Perception Evolution: Sonic Colors: Sonic's more comedic characterization in the English script was once widely embraced by the fanbase, seen as perfectly fitting in with the game's Denser and Wackier tone, harkening back to how he was portrayed in English language media in The '90s and generally giving him an opportunity to spout funny one liners. By the release of Sonic Forces, many fans had gotten sick of this characterization, feeling that he'd been turned into a rude Jerkass and a walking parody of himself whose banter amounted to little more than crude name calling. Not helping matters was how badly it clashed with the more dramatic elements of the game's story, which gave the impression that he wasn't taking things seriously.
I deleted this as it's misuse as written. CPE is not just them becoming more or less popular in later works, but their popularity in their original/prior works being re-evaluated. I believe it is the case his Colors portrayal has become less popular given the reception to the remake, but want to double check/am not sure how to put it (or maybe "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny is the better fit?).
Can someone explain how I'm supposed to sever the link between The End and Supreme? It'll probably be blindingly obvious in hindsight, but it seems like none of my moves do anything.
My musician page![]()
"Seinfeld" Is Unfunny is a better pick. The characterization has always been controversial, due to being a Pontac work. And it's not like Pontac didn't took the criticism, as Sonic's personality is different in Lost World (where he is shown as vulnerable and serious when the situation is not on his control).
If anything, people are applying the Forces criticism to Colors, when you can't even blame Pontac here entirely. The script wasn't his, it was a Sega of Japan script that made Sonic an Invincible Hero that didn't take anything seriously.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.Oh baller!

I think you fly near the tube and use special moves on it, at around the point where it connects to SUPREME.

The Protomen enhanced my life.
*5: I've generally avoided added anything like that to YMMV pages in general, because it's worth noting that the backlash against Colors is very much a Vocal Minority thing.
The idea that Colors was once lauded but is now widely panned is, well, false. It's still widely well regarded and hasn't really lost much of its luster with the wider player base, but there's a specific portion of the fanbase that believes it was a step backward.
Edited by KnownUnknown on Sep 30th 2023 at 1:58:58 AM
I'm familiar with Sonictubers who hold that thought. Chaomix, Emi Jones, Characters In Depth, they have made it clear of their dislike of Colors, and as the first two are popular Sonictubers, they have an effect on the community.
However, this Vocal Minority refers to 2000's Sonic fans, which as unlikely it is to believe, aren't the whole community. Hell, Emi Jones main argument is a defense for Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game.
It's the same with IDW critics. The most vocal of them tend to be, believe it or not, Eggman fanboys mad at Flynn for the "Eggman never plans" thing. However, their passionate defense of the Pontac era is still that of a Vocal Minority.
It's very difficult to tell what the general opinion of Sonic fans are, due to how biased the critics and fans are of the series.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back. The most complaints I've heard from people who played Sonic Colors was that the gameplay was good, but the story was bad. I think most people's issues with the Sonic games in the 2010s (besides the bad gameplays) was that the stories weren't that well written compared to the Adventure Era. It wouldn't be until Sonic Frontiers that the stories started improving a bit.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Unpleasable Fanbase. Literally just that. Everyone has their opinion and is dissatisfied with everything that doesn't live up to nostalgia, and yet most can't define what they actually liked about that nostalgia.
Literally just ask what a "Sonic Adventure 3" would be, besides "a 3D game with a Chao Garden", and watch how much answers vary. Especially since the two Adventure games had variance between them.
Ok, negatives 1st. I would've gone over them last due to the sheer number of them, but after experiencing the final boss I don't feel it deserves all this negativity from me to cap it off.
The difficulty. Holy shit the difficulty. They really took the complaints about the base game being too easy to heart. And in turn they ended up going way too far in the other direction. Most of the platforming you need to do is too precise for how the controls in this game are, and since tails doesn't have a Homing Attack you're gonna need to be extra precise with him if you want to bounce off springs and the like. Then there's the infamous towers you have to scale as Sonic. Now I only did it on Easy so I had the balloons to Homing Attack, but even then I still found myself falling off a couple times and with there being nothing to carry you back up like there was on Rhea Island, yeah.
Then there were the trials. Who in Solaris' name thought these were ok? With them resetting Sonic's stats that means all those upgrades you got in the main game were for nothing. Literally the only trials that seemed fair were the 3rd and 4th one. The enemies in the dragon trial are way too fast, and they put their shields up way too frequently, the snake trial is the pure definition of a test of patience, and the final one has to be by far the worst boss rush I've ever done in my life.
Next up is Cyberspace. Now I only did 1 Cyberspace stage, but I see it as a warning of things to come. There were no checkpoints (and it was pretty damn long), you can count the amount of rings you find on one hand, the S Rank time looks even more ridiculous than 1-2, to the point I question how much the Spindash would even help, and if you want to tackle all of the challenges one at a time you have to exit Cyberspace, then immediately jump back in. Remember, in the main game if you succeeded at one of the challenges it would save it immediately after you beat the level, even if you press to redo the stage. Here that's not the case. You have to go complete the mission, finish the level, exit out, enter again, work on another of the missions until you succeed, fish the level, exit out, enter back in again again. And do remember that while there is no loading screen after pressing retry, there is one after interacting with the portal. What is this, Sonic 06's town missions?
Knuckles is a complete travesty. You know something went wrong when his infinite jump glitch is preferable to gliding for traversal. The windup for the glide is just annoying, turning is a complete nightmare, and the wall running is no better than it was with Sonic. I can't believe I'm sayng this, but he may be almost just as bad, if not even worse, as his 06 iteration.
Tails isn't as bad, but I'd be hard pressed to even call him on par with Sonic. It mainly has to do with his lack of a homing attack which would've been real useful for when he would need to use bouncepads.
You are heavily limited when starting as each character. Literally the only things they can do without upgrades are their unique aerial actions and a Homing Attack in Amy and Knuckles' case, they don't even start out with a melee attack.
The guardians? ... Ugh, I only intentionally ran into very few of them and... Well, I'd rather not talk about it.
Now that I got all that out of my system, time for praise.
To my (and possibly everyone's) complete surprise, Amy is freaking amazing. She has a really high jump, and her somersault makes her go even higher, a triple jump, and an incredible glide. And that's without the spindash. I'm telling you after purchasing the Cyloop, make the Spindash your priority. There's nothing more fun then triple jump gliding after a spindash and watching Amy cover so much distance.
Despite my feelings on Tails, there's one thing I did enjoy about him. The Cyclone. Make an infinity sign with the Cyloop after getting max rings, and you've pretty much trivialized all platforming in the game.
Now the big one, the revamped final boss.
Do I think it's better than HD Dark Gaia? ... Eh, I did it on Easy with a maxed out Sonic. I may need to fight it on Hard before I can 100% say. Although the extreme vagueness kinda deducts some points from it. How is anyone supposed to know you need to target the tube to stop The End's healing? And even if you do manage to figure that out, there's another problem involving just that. You can only target the tube after attacking the head at least once. Not only that, at one point you have to Cyloop the sword that pops out of them. Neat callback to Knight aside, I didn't even know how to get the sword out of them in the 1st place. At one point I just Cylooped their chest and suddenly cutscene. Would've been great if the other characters could actually give hints on what to do. That said... Yeah, this was infinitely better than the main game's finale and while I will need to fight him on Hard, or at the very least without upgrades (Thankfully, I still have my file from before the Knihgt battle for that. Unfortunately, that means I'll also have to go through the whole DLC again), to figure out how I truly feel, for now I think I can say it's top 5, if not 3, material.
Despite the many, many, MANY headaches on the path getting there it was worth it for that finale and I'm glad I didn't resort to just quitting and watching the rest on Youtube.

No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!Yeah, no matter what I do, the game won't acknowledge the tube as a valid target for attacks.
My musician page
Hit the head first to knock it off balance, then go for the tube. Cylooping the chest might also work.
So...Amy can't run on walls?

Speaking of musical legal troubles, does Sega still not have access to the Sonic 1 & Sonic 2 compositions or was that problem resolved?
