A common theory is that Amy and Tekno from Sonic the Comic both bi and are in a relationship. In the 'Exit Sonic' story in Sonic The Comic Online that was written by one of the writers of the original comic they are raising a kid together.
Mighty's father Blockhead Bill from Sonic The Comic is hinted to be in a relationship with his Business partner Society Max. The comic writer Nigel Kitching did think that were in a homosexual relationship.

"May your heart be your guiding key"To be frank, straight or not, almost every pairing imaginable could narratively work for the Sonic cast. It's probably way too late for Sega to commit to a ship because then it opens the floodgates to... God knows what.
Well, that or they'd have to reconcile with Sally Acorn being Sonic's ideal better half and their headquarters facing the same fate as the Kyoto Animation studio.
No, I'm not exaggerating.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryI see Sonic characters like I see TMNT characters. Their personalities are broad enough where different interpretations are inevitable and should be encouraged.
Every writer has their own ideas on how these characters should behave based on the broad traits they have.
Some fans (and I'm specifically gonna call Pariah out on this) see Sonic like series like One Piece, and think it's an ongoing story with an expanding narrative and I'm like "naw".
I 100% agree with this take. Mario is in the same boat, there's no hard continuity from game to game, they're all mostly standalone stories.

Short answer: Thinking as a writer, I look at Romance as just another tool to use that helps create more dramatic and story driven scenarios that also gives characters more depth. Depth that I think the Sonic cast could use without sacrificing the nature of Sonic stories themselves.
But because the fan base is the way it is, I legitimately believe Sega has a genuine fear of the shipping community thanks to Sat AM/Archie publicizing the Son Ally pairing. If diehard anime fans are willing to burn down entire studios, harass creators and voice actors over the most contrived reasoning, I wouldn't put it past certain Sonic fans taking similar routes.
They're already challenging Ian Flynn, issuing death threats at him and each other. And with a lot of them already anime diehards to begin with, Sega ignoring romance outright is probably their safest bet.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryI'm pretty sure it caught on fire.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I wonder if Sonic the Hedgehog Bible and Stay Sonic has Sonic and Sally in a relationship. Since it is the first appearance of some characters in Sonic Media the characters are named Sally Acorn, Johnny Lightfoot, Chirps, Tux, Joe Sushi, Porker Lewis and Flicky the Bluebird.

"May your heart be your guiding key"It's amazing everyone remembers Sally years after she was locked in the vault.
It doesn't sound that long, but six years is how long it took for Archie to become a meme.
With every day that passes, everyone remembers it less for what it brought to the table and more as some weird relic.

I think I recall the Sat AM Freedom Fighters being written into the Bible in one of it's revisions. Like for one example Sir Antoine was meant to be an Englishman with a French last name.
That or I'm confusing it with a script. Sonic Retro has a batch of scans for it on their site and forum space.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryIs this the promo we're talking about?
It shows off some early concept art for what eventually became the SATAM Sonic, and it looked quite different.
Yep, that's the one. Lord knows how this would've looked. I can see it doing much more slapstick but since Adventures was a thing the show runners probably wanted something tonally opposite.
If I were forced to choose between Adventures and the Sat AM we got, I'd probably run with this early concept to capitalize on the funny and the serious.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryThere's a video going over the history of the two shows and why they were made the way they were.
Fixed it.

That's not a video.
I don't think we're ever going to get an Official Couple in the current Sonicverse, unless it's like, the train conductor and his wife in Murder. The most we'll get is heavy hinting. Tangle/Whisper might as well be canon but we're as likely to get a confirmation on that as Sonic/Amy or Knuckles/Rouge or any other popular ship.

The same guys just added a video for the Underground series. While most of the info told here isn't anything I've already read about, the one thing that stood out to me the most was the promo ad they showed in the middle of the episode.
I don't have fond memories of watching this, because it was always so frustrating trying to catch it on broadcast in the morning and I never figured out why. Turns out, they were broadcasting this show at friggin' six in the morning. On weekdays. Who in their right minds thought that was a good idea? Literally no kid was up that early on a school day just for Sonic the Hedgehog.
It was only later after actually watching the series in college did I learn that it was pretty bottom tier as a Sonic toon, which made it all the more frustrating after finally getting a hold on it after all these elusive years.
