Internet: Oh, another 2D Sonic game? It's gonna have Green Hill and Chemical Plant and other places we been to a billion times? LAME.
Iizuka: HAHAHAHA, NO.
Yeah, no Green Hill, no Chemical Plant. These will be brand new places. You're welcome.

Besides the 2D stuff in major 3D games.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Observations:
- Boosters, grind rails, and tubes, oh my! It would be a lot easier to see momentum mechanics if there weren't so many things blasting Sonic all over the place.
- The slower platforming portions seem alright; at the very least, they look more natural than they do in the modern games' 2D segments.
- I saw several instances where Sonic ran along the grind rails like normal terrain when he wasn't moving fast enough. Bug or feature?
- Yep, that's Fang all right. I have no strong feelings on him in particular. I'm not too fond of his helmeted (?) companion though. If this is their idea of a Bumbling Henchmen Duo, then I'm afraid Orbot and Cubot have them beat.
- This is definitely just a me thing, but I don't like the idea of each individual Chaos Emerald having its own associated power. New Powers as the Plot Demands is nothing new to Sonic, but it seems particularly clumsy here. Unless we're collecting a new set of Mineral MacGuffins, I don't see this as a "natural" extension of either Sonic's or the Emeralds' powers. I know Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog did it and I'm pretty certain Archie did it in days of yore, but this is the game 'verse.
All in all, Superstars looks fine, but it's not to my notoriously finicky taste.
Sonic running at top speed puts him in the grinding animation on the rail...
The Chaos Emeralds are suppose to grant wishes...it took them 10 years to introduce one ability that they have.
Now it's taken 22 years for them to actually do the thing they're suppose to do besides Super Sonic. I won't fault you for thinking it's being poorly implemented, but this is the type of thing they should've been doing a while ago.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Looking at the footage right now, it looks better than Sonic 4, but not really on Mania's level. Which I guess is still an improvement for Sonic Team, so I can't be too upset to be honest.
They clearly have a different design ethos for Classic Sonic than Whitehead's team, so I'm not gonna fault them for that.
Twinkle Park riff being in the first zone song is pretty good.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. That's Sonic 4 music...
And it'd make less sense being here than the level that music is from.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. It definitely looks like Sonic and co control really well. I like what I've seen about boss design for sure.
I guess my one wish at this point is for good level design and environmental story telling.
If the chaos emerald powers are too gimmicky I can just not use them so that's not even a concern for me.
Superstars looks great, but all my hype for playable Amy in it and Origins Plus is kinda petered out. She's pretty much just 'Sonic but with lightning shield'. Comparing it to all her unique gameplay styles in previous games, it just seems pretty damn dull.

I liked Amy's Advance gameplay really.
I get that would be complex to add here, but surely they could have done better than a double jump, the most overused and generic ability you can give a platformer character. Knuckles plays like Sonic but has really distinctive abilities (flying/gliding) and a shrewdly effective weakness (bad jumping).
Like even giving her the bubble shield bounce instead would have been more engaging and felt more in tone with her slam attack from the Advance games, then give her the peel out instead of the spin dash as both an Advance 2 and CD nod and to incentivise using the hammer more. Still simple but at least more inspired than just Sonic's Blast gameplay.
To be honest, I've always hated how similar the characters in the Classic games are. 1 playthrough feels almost no different from the others, so I keep questioning why I even bother playing all of them when I could just play as Sonic and stop afterwards, especially since he is the only one that gets access to the Super Sonic boss excluding Mania's stage select cheat. Then again, only 2 classic games even have a Super Sonic fight and one of them still gives me one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had in my life.
No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!

I have often viewed Metal Sonic to be more offense based and Mecha Sonic based more on taking hits so defense based. Metal Sonic being the sword to Mecha Sonic's shield.
