Instant speed's been a part of Sonic's brand for as long as Super Sonic has. It's just that it used to be done via Spin Dash instead of Boost.

Yeah, and spin dash is always inferior to momentum, as it never puts you at your top speed. Good for getting up slopes, and a nice tool, but momentum was always more powerful than spindash.

To this day I question why Sega didn't just make the boost animation the spin dash.

Lost World had the right idea there.

Because they serve different functions; Boost is an instant, and continuous burst of speed that isn't really affected by terrain.

The spin dash needs to be charged, and is affected by the terrain.

It'd just be an aesthetic change, which doesn't really address the core differences between them.

Momentum doesn't work as a replacement for top speed if the maps are designed to interrupt Sonic every couple of feet.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.

The old maps interrupted Sonic frequently too. Until you memorize the level design, the fact is that an inconvenient rock in the path, a sudden drop, a jump you weren't prepared for, or one of those insidious backwards-facing springs is all it takes to cancel your momentum and force you to start again.

Sonic games aren't made to be speedrun on your very first time through the level.

You know, I have to wonder if Lost World's infinite Spin Dash was just a huge oversight that they just decided to keep since it's already in, a glitch, or an actual mechanic that they intentionally came up with to probably make up for the lack of a boost, although maybe that last part isn't the case because in the Wii U version Super Sonic actually boosts instead.

Regardless, so far the one I'm leaning the least towards is it being a glitch. It's in both versions, it's way too coincidental in my eyes.

As someone who did the S rank time trials for those games, it's 100% intentional game design, you even get a visual white flash (like a thin circle that gets larger (but just as thin) until it leaves the screen entirely) to indicate that you've activated the forever version of it.

Sonic games are meant to have you replay the level until you can do it in a flashy and fast way. I know for sure Green Hill 1 wasn't a 30 second level the first times I played it.

Yep. That's the consequence of playing a character whose reaction time and situational awareness is way better than any human's ever could be.

Canon Sonic is presumably doing S-Tier speedruns on his first try, no sweat. But it takes a lot of practice for the human player to simulate that.

Kind of hoping it's like Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) where it was less about speed and more about the platforming. There's a reason why Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) is my favorite in the 2D franchise.

Sonic 3 is more exploration based, but without sacrificing the speed.

The Sonic Stadium has footage of the animated intro to Superstars.

The new character is some hapless goober in a concealing helmet.

How disappointing.

I would like a Mecha Sonic boss battle but I am expecting a Metal Sonic boss battle, if there is a Sonic Robot boss battle.

I'd love for Mecha sonic to appear. But he steps on Metal's toes so much I can't see him appearing unless it's to some how differ him further from his shorter brother. Perhaps Mecha would have to drop the 'sonic' part of his gimmick to justify him appearing along side Metal in future classic appearances.

Mecha Sonic seems to battle the heros in combat in a single place. Where as Metal Sonic battles involves you racing him or having battles where Sonic keeps running automatically.

And Metal Sonic's posture and animation makes him come across as a lot more spiteful than Mecha who comes across as more stoic or detached. I like their differences; that's why I want them both to play a role in the franchise going forward. They just over lap in character concept a lot.

Sonic Stadium's also been posting a lot of gameplay footage too.
