I can only hope it doesn’t went down the route of repeated world and boss concepts.
New Super Mario Bros. as a series caught flak for reusing too many ideas within a few years. They are great games individually, but as a series, it either needs improvement with genuine additions and shake-ups while retaining the basic but beloved gameplay, or leave it behind.
Fang “Nack” the Sniper coming back for real, possibly alongside Bark and Bean, is an awesome surprise!
Hello! :3People can complain about the reusage of Green Hill all they want...
But it's weird thinking that having simple, easy to churn out games means they'd do everything Nintendo would.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. They literally can...
But Sonic's not exactly bound by the same rules as Mario.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. This turning into New Sonic the Hedgehog would make my already high indifference jump to unbelievably extreme levels. I'll admit, unlike Sonic there was a time I actually liked the classic Mario games. But then when about 85% of the series ended up being just that... Yeah, calling them dull and monotonous would be way too nice. Thank goodness we now have stuff like Odyssey, Rabbids, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi (Granted though, the last 2 were remakes), 3D World + Bowser's Fury, etc.

No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!Sonic Superstars 2 will have the Deadly Six. But this time, they'll be beloved. Until the later games use them too damn much lol
Sonic Superstars 4 will have a Tails Superstars game where instead of Sonic, the fourth character is a Roller. Sally will be playable but she and Amy can't be in a coop run together. Sally would also have a power up unique only to her.
Sonic Superstars 3's gimmick will be collecting rings to fill the ring meter and go Super. It's the worst one.
Yes lol

I don't think 4 games counts as 85% of a series' output...
But we gotta exaggerate how bad it was.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. When people compare NSMB to the "3D" games...I have to question what it is that they're seeing.
Despite such over saturation, Mario has not exactly degraded in its visuals due to them existing. It became a crutch, but wasn't guaranteed in anything important.
Sonic has a higher risk of degradation because of its refusal to come up with original level themes after Sonic Generations.
But they don't seem to have such a problem right now with what they've shown of Super Stars at reveal.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Had Sonic 4 continued to be the consistently released 2D series, that reaction would be warranted.
Though 4 player co-op is at least something.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Honestly I think I'm just quietly excited about Classic Sonic both continuing and seemingly evolving in its own way. It looks like a far more novel exploration of platforming elements than Sonic 4, and having multiple characters right off the bat is encouraging.
Does make me wonder if getting Amy in Origins Plus was essentially a primer for what she's doing here, especially given the similarity in moveset.
Also between Robo Blast 2, Triple Trouble 16 bit, Sonic Galactic and now this? Fang/Nack fans are eating well.

I've had a sense that Sega still sees value in Classic as a sub-brand and a continuation of that is likely seen as a safer bet than another Advance or Rush style release. It is unfortunate that the divide between the two spheres of the franchise is still intact (and so defined by 2D vs. 3D) but it almost feels like an inevitability of development costs and general risk aversion by Sega these days.
Edit: One of the descriptions on the website suggests the new Ohshima designed character is an adversary:
Navigate gorgeous, never-before-seen environments solo or with up to 3 other players and stop Dr. Eggman, Fang, and a mysterious new adversary from converting the islands' giant animals into Badniks before it's too late!
So dealing with Eggman, Fang, and a new enemy? One might say Sonic and pals are dealing with quite the... Triple Trouble.

It's nice to see Sega finally moving the 2D games past Green Hill rehashes, but I need to see more gameplay footage before I make any judgements. Most of my issues with Sonic's modern 2D segments stem from clunky physics and blocky level design, and the trailer focused more on features and aesthetics than mechanics. That said, saving the technical stuff for later is probably a good call for an announcement/teaser trailer.
If they're trying to make a whole Classic Sonic brand, then promoting Amy to playable was arguably the best decision they ever made.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have subtle changes in body size between Classic and Modern. It's most visible in 3-D spaces, especially when Classic and Modern counterparts are standing next to each other for comparison. But Classic-style games are of course going to be 2-D.
But Amy's entire aesthetic changed dramatically between CD and Sonic Adventure. So you can instantly peg whether you're looking at the Classic- or Modern-style characters with one glance at Amy's look.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

SEGA could do with a NSMB type of series just to maintain some consistency...
Though they should only add DLC to the 3rd/4th one.
