Even so, if it really is that lukewarm, then then the latest promotions and milestones wouldn't have happened, so don't try to downplay how this game is a welcome change of form for most fans.
"Cynicism is not realistic and tough. It's unrealistic and kind of cowardly because it means you don't have to try."I think saying the game's reception is both mostly positive and divisive may be both correct. The game's reception has been very positive, but any discussion about the game has a lot of people being rather down about aspects of the game but perhaps with ending positively about it being step forward for the series. I get the feeling the perspectives on Frontiers are colored heavily by the context of how it relates to the rest of the franchise. Frontiers has a certain effort and freshness to it that recent games had been lacking, and with it a promise that later Sonic games will continue to improve, so people are perhaps overly positive about it. On the other hand, I can imagine an alternate timeline where Sonic didn't have such a negative reputation and people loved the recent Sonic games, where Frontiers is perhaps a step down and people are overly negative about it.
When you leave the bubble of the Sonic fandom, the game has been seen as simply passable. Nothing offensive but nothing really groundbreaking either. Its mostly Sonic fans that are treating it as this masterpiece of a game because of how burned they were about Forces.
And even then, the positivity is built less on the actual game itself and more on what they expect from the future.
Like of course the game looks better if you only look at the people who are already Sonic fans to begin with and are already predisposed to liking the series. Once you actually go to general audiences though, it's a bit more complicated.
The very nature of Critical Dissonance means it's divisive. That's why consensus' exist
The very fact that people can debate its quality means it's divisive.
This isn't a case where the game got glowing reception, but has a few vocal haters.
The game got ok reception that mostly leans positive.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Well, I can't deny the game pandered heavily to existing fans, which would make sense that it would come at the expense of people who aren't already fans.
My musician pageWait, seriously? That's all it takes?
I can debate the quality of Avengers: Endgame until the cows come home. Guess that means the movie's divisive, and not at all a smash success near-universally hailed by a huge swathe of people.

When the same issues keep being mentioned by various people, yea I'd say that counts as problematic...

Yes and No? The MCU is literally the most popular media franchise on the planet as far as general consumers go, but its not like the quality is consistent across the board either because of it.
Endgame has its issues, but the movie is kind of specifically built on the 11 years of buildup from the previous movies.
I can flip this and just say you have low standards since you wanna go there.
I don't think it's entirely wrong to expect or want a franchise with as much of a legacy as Sonic to put out a high quality game as opposed to just getting an alright game with the expectation of a better one.

A problem is a problem. How much it hampers your enjoyment of the game will vary from person to person, but it doesn't make the problem go away either.
Hell, I (mostly) enjoyed Frontiers despite its issues. The reason I point out the problems is because I want them to be addressed and fixed so I can get a better game. That's the point of constructive criticism, it's meant to be constructive.
What I'm seeing here is that usual phenomenon when something that people like is criticized, even in good faith, it's taken as a personal attack.
Now granted, given that Sonic is practically a meme due to bad faith criticisms, I understand why some fans get pretty reactionary and defensive to any criticism, but still...
Despite how I usually sound, I do like Sonic and give it credit where its due. Really my biggest problem with Sonic is that it often doesn't live up to it's potential. Which gets aggravating after three decades tbh.
How is it any more bullshit than the "glass is half full" mindset?

I would be willing to settle for a Rouge game, which is more likely to be popular with the audience demographic of "People who are not me specifically".

If Sega makes ALL of these then MAYBE the franchise is finally saved.

Steam reviews aren't a very good metric. Users can only rate a game yes or no, there's no nuance. For all that tells you, a game could have 95% positive rating, but most of the people rating yes are only lukewarm on the game were only barely passes getting a yes.
