I can hear it now.

The End (English Version): Little Rodent. Do you not understand that you crash against eternity itself? Long have I existed, and when you are dead and gone, I will still be. Because I am. Now you will know what it means to be an insignificant ant against a tidal wave. Now will you know despair before you meet oblivion.

Meanwhile, in Japan...

The End (Japanese Version): Bitch. Y'all gonna get rekt!

[lol]

The main difference between THE END's speech is that in Japanese, it's a lot more straightforward and less poetic.
I have no idea how you came to that opinion. The End's Japanese speech sounds a lot more chuuni and trying-to-be-philosophical. Its English speech is basically just it ranting about how Sonic is a loser who can't win.

It was acknowledged that Kishimoto opted for the Japanese script to be more or less catered to his native audience and that it's condescendingly believed that English storytelling is "simpler."(read: inferior)

There's probably already translations of everything in Japanese Frontiers, but since it's boring to just take one of those I made my own translation of The End's speech for comparison.

The English version.

Mortal, you have served your purpose.
Now face your End.
I am the all consuming void.
What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss?
Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me, all brought to nothing.
All the teeming chaos of creation?
Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. I saw your mind as you ran through my prison. You have fought machines and gods. They were mighty. They were finite. I am Infinite. I am nothing.
You struggle as so many have done before.
You will be consumed like all those before you.
I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance Stupidity? I was contained once. Once. Is that why?
My captors bent time and space. My captors built a whole reality to contain me. My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines.
And you? You glitter; you fly above me like a gnat.
I am inevitable, I cannot be denied.
You strike this incarnation with all your might.
It changes nothing.
You are not brave; you are not victorious.
No matter what form I take. The End comes for you all!

The Japanese version.

I am the orchestrator of the universe's laws; its arbiter.
My light is judgement. I am the one who will dissolve all back to primordial dust.
Nothing can escape the infinite light.
Answer me, tiny life.
It is because of my orchestration and arbitration that all life equally attains tranquility.
Even now, many lives are resting in peace due to my guidance.
Is it your expanded sense of self that makes you choose your path?
The search for the reason why one lives, is this what is known as will?
The harder life grips onto its will, the thousands more hardships rain down upon them.
Behold the many lives that turn away from the challenges set before them.
All life outside myself are existences unable to overcome their own fragile hearts.
Unable to realize their own ignorance as they believe themselves the only life without error.
Nothing exists in this universe that is immutable and absolute.
Faced with anguish and absurdity, the only future that awaits is to lose one's self to insanity.
When judgement is ruled, reality makes its appearance.
What was desired? What was made certain? What was asked? What was pondered? What was achieved?
This planet will forever be sealed away.
My orchestration is the judgement known as fate; that which will be ruled onto all that exists in this universe.
From antiquity, all lifeforms in possession of will were destined to come to this conclusion. There exists not even blame for your foolish actions.
Listen well to the dark chirping that lurks within your heartbeats.
Life stagnates and awaits to be guided to its twilight.
Even so, you choose to continue forward. That choice strains against reason.
Stop these meaningless actions at once. This is the final warning.
That's right, this was decided since the beginning.
This has repeated beyond count.
I see. Does your reason exist in this universe?
Can you devote your existence to that will that guides life forward?
Something is occuring. Something beyond laws and time.
Is this the brink of a new evolution?
Perhaps... The universe... Life is...

Alright, since I've copied the Japanese dialogue when Windii translated it, my opinion of The End in Japanese is: this entity speaks too much, and I can barely understand what is trying to say with its poetry, shoving the theme of the game.

By comparison, I feel the English version is simpler, straight to the point, and understandable.

I want to approve of the Japanese version, as I have done with other entries, but I just don't understand The End's rambling. I have to re-read it to properly get what The End is saying.

@Sonic RPGS:

I think it helps nowadays that traditional RPGS that are all about speed and managing your party's speed (or time management) vs the enemy's speed/time btw moves vs your own are increasingly popular these days.

That system where turn order is - like - one big timer and every move you make manipulates that timer would be interesting for Sonic, I think, especially if there's some kind of positioning mechanic involved as well.

[up][up][up] Oh my God, that is Chuuni as fuck lmao. That's a speech straight out of a Persona game lmao. Or every JRPG final boss ever.

So in conclusion...

English: Basically one long Badass Boast about how powerful it is.

Japanese: Talking about the futility of your actions and how all will return to nothingness.

That is mentioned, briefly, on trs trope page:

"The Japanese version has THE END outline its motivations more, as its goals are explicitly stated to bring peace to a chaotic universe and functioning more as a force of nature akin to Galactus. It even has a Graceful Loser attitude as it realizes what hope and life mean."

It's there any other Western example I can think of? I do remember comparing it with Galactus once.

That comparison to me comes off as the clearest case in the differences between western writing(ie: seen in Hollywood/TV) and eastern writing(ie: seen in Anime). The latter example falls under the Kishotenketsu approach that values long winded exposition dumps and monologues versus Ian's script just getting to the point.

This is essentially the biggest reason why I can't enjoy Anime anymore, I want good scriptwriting dammit.

Holy crap I can see the differences. Between them the JP version definitely feels like something you'd expect from a JRPG...which tbh is too much for a Sonic game. The English version is more of a statement of how death is the final destination for all and something that cannot be escaped.

There's a lot of irony how people wanted Sonic to "go back to being Anime" and then dislike the traits that are distinctly Anime.

[up][up][up] Oh my god, I remember loving and binging on Kill La Kill before I studied screenwriting in college. Then once I came back to finish the series I just... couldn't. I had three episodes left and it felt like a slog. It was so eye opening how different watching Anime is compared to binging on a live action series on cable TV.

Ian also compared THE END to The Angels from Evangelion, though he also claims that any parallels the game may have to Evangelion likely don't go beyond this.

[up][up] That's not the point.

Being long winded and overly prose is like...a trademark of Japanese video games and products in general.

So I'm just amused how Sonic finally embraces that and now are now "no, I don't want it, American writing please" after we just had a whole decade of "American writing".

I understand the complaint, it's just amusing to me simply because it just tells me that nobody is ever going to be completely satisfied with Sonic no matter what it does, for better or worse.
