Holy hell, is it too late to suggest we just ignore Pariah by this point? He's taken this self proclaimed Sonic Expert title too seriously.
He might make an interesting point or give a valuable take every once in a while but he's unapologetically one of the most obnoxious game purist of the fan base that I've ever seen. That video is already flawed starting with the title.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryI don't think anyone needs to be told to ignore the dude, the people updating this thread with his videos are already interested...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. On that note, I won't be posting his videos anymore if its going to upset people. So ![]()
don't worry about it, I got the message.
I didn't post it with the intention of talking about how much we don't like the user or his opinions and I'm not going to foster that subject either.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I like Pariah. His takes are overall solid. However, the Amy video gave me a really sour mood because...
I don't want more character discourses. No more. Ever since Characters In Depth and obsessed millenials on Twitter and Tumblr started doing those all I get is a migraine. I'll avoid this video for the same reason, as... Ok, Sonic is Japanese because he was created by the Japanese. Which means we should write him under Japanese tropes only the East can write or extreme weebs.
Fine. I'll just await the Colors reviews and ignore everything else.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back. You're never going to escape Sonic character discourse unless you just leave the internet.
I only posted the video cuz I liked the actual topics it discussed. But I can understand just not wanting to be bothered with it for a peace of mind.
I just hope people ya know...listen to some of these videos as opposed to just having a knee-jerk reaction to the title.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I mean I'm not(always) trying to shoot people down for their opinions. I've wanted to say something about Pariah for a long time. It's just after reading this corner of the web for months, everything I've wanted to say has already been said, I figured I wouldn't even see something like this anywhere within these boards. He published a video regarding Sonic Prime and it was filled with so many lies and warped understanding regarding other western adaptions. Noticing that it was nowhere to be found in the Sonic Prime thread indicated to me that folks here caught on to that as well. lol
I honestly didn't mean that to be an outburst, I'm just irked by two things: he didn't make this video sooner and I didn't have the opportunity to delete it off my recommendation feed months after it was published.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic Visionary![]()
I mean, its fine. I figured someone was gonna get tired of hearing about him eventually and there are probably others here who are sick of his videos too that just don't speak up out of respect.
I don't wanna put anyone on the spot like that, so I think its best if we don't post his videos anymore.
I do think its important to understand why you have such a visceral reaction to him. Do you just fundamentally disagree with him or you just don't like his tone or some combination of?

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. But the video title is flawed though. We've already went over Sonic's history, intent behind the creation of the franchise, the hero himself and many of the characters and stories that the entire SEGA corp infused into it.
Just because Sonic came off as a Dragonball ripoff doesn't mean he's forever meant to be a Dragonball ripoff, let alone subjugated to pure Japanese influence just because.
EDIT:
It's mainly two things: My taste in entertainment has a complicated relationship with Anime/Manga and understanding canon doesn't need to be the end-all, be-all.(I'm leaving that for another rant) You mentioned at some point about game purists being fine so long as they're not obnoxious. Thing is, Pariah and fans like him think they can dumpster dive through Sonic Retro better than anyone else. And won't shut up about it, especially when things like Mobius or Sally Acorn are within listening range.
Game purists like Pariah have demonstrated over and over that they don't possess the capacity to see the bigger picture and that deviation is necessary(healthy, even!) to the creative process. The recent Twitter picture stories are an excellent example of that. They're fun and they're entertaining. What's not fun and entertaining is surrendering to a staunch group of know-nothings badgering you over which character is canon to the Japanese overlords.

Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryThat would be "internal" since the reaction came from someone here...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Here's an animatic of the lines Sonic, Shadow, and Silver give while fighting Solaris (phase 2):
I like it. I'd say even the mannerisms fit. Shame it's so short.
One Strip! One Strip!Even if I didn't have a fundamental disagreement on Pariah's viewpoint, I find his attempt to paint one of the most beloved and iconic gaming franchises exclusive to the values of one culture/global region over another as disingenuous and distasteful, especially knowing SEGA's history and knowing devs are now tasked with paying closer attention to the temperament of the fanbase.
The dude's a weeb. Not every damn thing needs to be a shonen.
EDIT:
Wow
I'm two minutes into this video and Pariah has just confirmed everything that I've been saying. I can't even hate-watch this knowing that it's 40 plus minutes long of him going "hear me out, bro."
I'm seriously not gonna hear this man out. lol this is just too silly to consider.
EDIT x2:
lol apparently "silly" is too kind, this is just downright painful. It's been close to an hour after hitting play and I can't even get past three minutes without wanting to chuck my laptop out the window while cackling like Mark Hamill on a good day.
Bro I can't. this video is just painfully dumb. who listens to this guy.

Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryAdmitably Sonic being "fundamentally Japanese" is a funny thing to say considering how much he's been written by western writers.
I think the strongest point against that is that Sonic has very few manga, most of them fairly short in length while his western comic series are plentiful and still ongoing.
Huh makes me wonder how popular the comics are in Japan.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I don't recall the Archie or Fleetway series ever getting translated to the Japanese audience so it's nearly impossible to tell. I think @Rabbitearsblog asked something like this earlier and it concluded that IDW is pretty well received in Japan. What we don't really know is how different the translations are to Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley's English scripts. Because Kishotenketsu is a thing, it's likely the script was repurposed for Japanese "sensibilities" similar to how Frontiers was released to the world.
Certified, self-appointed Sonic VisionaryI can agree with his points, and I can understand where he's coming from.
But I don't agree with his ultimate conclusion - Sonic might have been written from a Japanese perspective, but that's a trait regarding how stories in general are told, not how the franchise's core essence work.
Sonic was always intended to be popular in both the US and in Japan, and So J weren't too thrilled about it only taking off in the US (and Europe).
I think you can maintain the Sonic style from a Japanese or English perspective, the important thing is to maintain the core of what this franchise is all about.

It should be noted that while the series was intended to be popular in the US, it wasn't created with Western sensibilities in mind and is in fact built on many Japanese concepts.
And yes, there is a difference between something being created for the US versus something being built on sensibilities for a specific region too.
So I feel like it's less an opinion and more of a statement of fact; Sonic was in fact built on many Japanese concepts and characterization traits that just did not translate well to an American soil. Hence the "Americanization" of the series in the 90's.
Sonic not being very popular in Japan is irrelevant to that point.
EDIT: I feel like this particular point gets such a massive pushback is because the American version of Sonic is ultimately what got the series popular to begin with and its what many people understand the series as.
By the time the more heavy Japanese influence for the franchise became more prominent, it had been a decade and it didn't help that the games themselves were questionable of quality.
Sonic isn't the only who had this issue; there was real big "anti-Japanese" sentiment going on in the mid 2000's and people hating "Anime shit".

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.

Disagree with the central premise to begin with given I think Sonic achieved a TMNT like malleable presence in his idenity so early that he's not fundamentally anything, but I suspect the video will be enjoyable.
