It's moreso the labeling is odd(cause Sonic 06 doesn't have Boost XD). That's kind of what confused me. But as I said, I get what you mean. I wasn't aware Generations put it that way(though Modern more sense to me wording-wise). Well, no matter~

Speaking of Boost, I forget if Advance had it. I know Rush does. I feel like the Advance trilogy had a gimmick akin to Boost, but Rush was the first one with the actual mechanic(with Unleashed or Rush Adventure being the second. I forget which was released first of the two).

Generations is also consistent with its handheld counterpart, tbf

Given said handheld put the Egg Emperor in the Modern era (though I think they called it the DS era? Which if true, is just doubly wrong).

Of course, Generations 3DS should've been all about the handheld games anyways, but the past is the past.

[up][up][up]Most of the Cyberspace stages were ports. I'm asking if there were any ports anyone wanted that weren't included.

[up][up]Advance 2 and 3 debuted the boost mechanic with "Boost Mode" a predecessor to what we now commonly refer to as "boost", but it didn't deal damage or anything. It was specifically a speed boost caused by certain triggers. Rush debuted what we commonly consider the true "Boost".

[up]That's why my question was what would you have done if you could pick the levels. I'll put my selections here, since the page rolled over:

  • Console
    • Classic Era:
      • Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1, obligatory)
      • Casino Night (Sonic 2)
      • Hydro City (S3&K)
    • Adventure Era:
      • Emerald Coast (Adventure 1)
      • City Escape (Adventure 2)
      • Egg Fleet (Heroes)
    • Boost Era:
      • Crisis City (06)
      • Dragon Road (Unleashed)
      • Starlight Carnival (Colors)
  • Handheld
    • Classic Era:
      • Green Hill (Sonic 1, obligatory)
      • Crystal Egg (Sonic 2 8-bit)
      • Tidal Plant (Triple Trouble)
    • Adventure ("Advance") Era:
      • Ice Mountain (Advance)
      • Music Plant (Advance 2)
      • Chaos Angel Cyber Track (Advance 3)
    • Boost Era:
      • Altitude Limit (Rush)
      • Haunted Ship (Rush Adventure)
      • Asteroid Coaster (Colors)

Yeah, Advance's boost was... weird. At least, Advance 2's was.

It was basically: if you managed to run unimpeded for a certain amount of time, you get a huge burst of speed that usually gets you killed because you can't plan for it and the screen is bad at scrolling to keep up that lasted until something slowed you down. It was more or less there for speedrunning (no pun intended), I think.

Generations did group 06 together with Unleashed and Colors. I guess it's less Boost era and more HD era (let's ignore that Colors technically wasn't HD).

Assuming we're adding one stage per game and not more stages from already represented games.

  • CD - Well they already partially made Stardust Speedway with the Metal Sonic fight, so might as well do that. They could even play with it by having Classic Sonic's stage be the past version, Modern Sonic's is the present version, and of course the Metal Sonic fight is the bad future version.
  • Sonic 3 - If we separated it from Sonic & Knuckles, so the Sky Sanctuary just represents the latter, for the former I'll go with Ice Cap just so there's a snow stage. You could even play with it by having Modern Sonic's stage be like Adventure 1's Ice Cap.
  • Knuckles' Chaotix - All the levels in this game are pretty unmemorable. Maybe Amazing Arena so they could mess with the light and dark gimmick. Or maybe Techno Tower if they wanted to play with the verticality.
  • Shadow - Doing an ARK level seems appropriate since we've already go assets made for the Shadow boss fight. The alternative of course is one of the Black Comet levels.
  • Secret Rings - Sand Oasis.
  • Black Knight - Camelot Castle seems like the most obvious, but I would go with Dragon's Lair with the dragon as a part of the stage (kind of like the truck in City Escape).

I think what Generation really needed was a completely original stage to represent itself. Maybe something that goes with the ruins and clock gears thing going on around the entrance to the Time Eater fight.

I like your ideas for adding games not mentioned. And also for a Generations' exclusive stage. It would probably also be colored a bit like the Time Eater and final boss stage itself, since otherwise it would've been mostly brown bricks, and that would be a bit of a let down from some of the earlier stages.

For me, choosing different stages for the games already in Generations, it was really hard choosing the stages for Adventure through Unleashed. A lot of the most iconic stages use similar themes. That's actually what prompted me to think about this question years ago, since it has bugged me for a while that Generations' last six stages went "urban night, urban day, green hill equivalent with water, (admittedly epic choice), urban day, green hill equivalent". It left out a lot of interesting stages, even some I couldn't include like Metal Harbor or Final Rush. But I didn't include either of those because Starlight Carnival handles both "giant flotilla" and "space level" on its own, and would be a nice way to cap off the game. Though I do worry if Starlight Carnival runs redundant with Egg Fleet. But how could you not have Egg Fleet?

I decided to replace Chaos Angel in the handheld version with Cyber Track. I prefer Chaos Angel's atmosphere and music, but putting Chaos Angel and Altitude Limit back to back seems cruel.

It'd be interesting to see a Generations with levels from the spin-offs. Get a Toxic Cave from Spinball, a Radiant Emerald from Sonic R, Dark Desert from Riders, and maybe an amalgamation stage from Sega Sonic.

Here's my ideas if we got one stage from every handheld game in Generations. Talking about the console version, since choosing stages for the handheld version of Generations would be different.

  • Sonic 1 (GG) - One of the stages that aren't in the console version seems appropriate, so I'd go with Sky Base. Seems more interesting than Bridge Zone or Jungle Zone.
  • Sonic 2 (GG) - I feel like the obvious choice is Sky High so as to play with the hang glider gimmick. Though it would be interesting to see a modern take on Crystal Egg for the visuals.
  • Chaos - Nothing in this game really jumps out at me. They all cover themes that other games already have more memorable stages for. Maybe Sleeping Egg?
  • Triple Trouble - Sunset Park. It doesn't overlap too much with other levels, and it has a neat boss that could be made a part of the stage.
  • Blast - Er, well... We don't have a lava stage covered yet so, Red Volcano?
  • Pocket Adventure - Aerobase. All the levels in this game are based on Sonic 2 levels, so it's kind of like choosing a second Sonic 2 level.
  • Advance - Egg Rocket/Cosmic Angel, because it's the most annoying level in the game and therefore the one I remember the most.
  • Advance 2 - Music Plant. Its unique theme makes it the most memorable level.
  • Advance 3 - I don't particularly care for any level in this game, so I'll chose Cyber Track since I don't have a similar level picked out yet.
  • Rush - Well, the handheld version of Generations used Water Palace, but if I had the choice I'd go with Night Carnival.
  • Rush Adventure - Haunted Ship.
  • Rivals - None of the stages in this game are great, so Death Yard because it has the best music.
  • Rivals 2 - Blue Coast, even though it's similar to Seaside Hill just because it gives an excuse to use Race to Win.
  • Colors (DS) - Asteroid Coaster.

And while we're at it, Sonic 4 Episode I was out too and could use a stage. The only one from that game I particularly remember enough to nominate is Lost Labyrinth.

And we want to go into spin-offs, then the racing game seem the easiest to take from. I don't think there's any point in having stages from Drift considering how non-existent the level design is in those games, but R and Riders could easily have stages.

  • R - Any one of the stages could be cool, but I'll choose Radiant Emerald for the weirdest and least overlap with other stage themes.
  • Riders - It would be yet another city level, but I think it's gotta be Metal City.
  • Zero Gravity - Not sure. Maybe Gigan Rocks.

Also, if adding new stages means also getting to add new bosses, then the final boss of Zero Gravity would be pretty cool.

...Does Sonic Battle have really anything besides a neat boss that could work? Cause the game doesn't really have any stage choices either. Though it might have some unique-ish areas that aren't just basically a smaller version of a specific stage? Maybe?

Giving Sonic Battle a level would be really pushing it. The arenas in Battle tend to be small and generic, just things like a beach, or some warehouse, or a few stone blocks on some grass. The most memorable ones are probably Amy's Room and Club Rouge, but you can't really make a full platformer level out of them. The best you could probably do with Battle without forcing it is an Emerl boss fight.

Ultimate Emerl could certainly be an interesting penultimate boss. Namely cause it has a ton of uniquely powerful moves. Wouldn't work as the final boss since that'd be someone new. Could also rescue Gemerl later too in return?

Yeah, I don't think there's much you can do outside of creating a level entirely based upon one of theirs. Though a composite level based upon the various arenas isn't completely impossible, but it's still massively different. Even if you include all the huge overworld and rework those pieces. ...Which makes sense. They're battle arenas. I could see them being used well as a Boss Arena or some kind of mini-game, though. Or maybe use one of the previous mini-games you could unlock? Bringing one back could be fun(I only remember the Minesweeper and the Racing one based upon Shadow's highway-type levels).

Club Rouge is where my mind immediately goes to for Sonic Battle, though I don't think that game should have a stage, maybe the spinoffs would have a minigame each. However, Sonic Battle also gives the rare opportunity to use a scientist's lab that isn't Eggman's, with Tails' Lab.

Other minigames:

  • Spinball - obvious
  • Mean Bean Machine - obvious
  • Tails Adventure/Sky Patrol - Fly and Get (from Sonic Battle)
  • Knuckles Chaotix - ? Maybe tug of war, or a minigame about the tandem rings
  • Battle - Soniclash
  • R/Rivals - versus race mode
  • Runners Adventure or Speed Battle - survival race mode
  • Shadow - shooting gallery
  • Secret Rings - ?
  • Black Knight - ?

What I would do is drop the number of additional acts and up the number of stages to maybe five or six stages. Maybe even more. The first game was super short.

So something like - if we go for six per era, without repeating stage choices from the first game:

Classic:

  • Sonic 1: Star Light Zone
  • Sonic 2: Mystic Cave
  • Sonic 3&K: Ice Cap
  • Sonic CD: Wacky Workbench (and I will stand on that hill. A Modern Wacky Workbench that composites in elements from Crazy Gadget would be awesome) or Collision Chaos.
  • Two Spinoffs:
    • Sonic 3D Blast: Rusty Ruin
    • Sonic Triple Trouble: Sunset Park

At least two bosses (1 for Classic, 1 for Modern) per era, and a Rival. I'm angling Rivals so that they don't favor one or the other gameplay style like the first game.

Classic Boss: Egg Tilter / Egg Catcher / Robotnik's Ship (Spinball) / Basically All The Pinball Bosses Of The Franchise All In One.

Modern Boss: Egg Crusher (seeing a Modern take on a boss whose threat is methodically removing your space and trying to crush you would be very interesting. Plus, the first final boss in the series)

Rival: Modern Sonic vs Super Mecha Sonic (empowered by Master Emerald)

Adventure Era

  • Sonic Adventure 1: Sky Deck (incorporating elements of the other Egg Carrier stages)
  • Adventure 2: Pyramid Cave
  • Heroes: Hang Castle
  • 06: Kingdom Valley
  • Two Spinoffs:
    • Sonic Rush: Dead Line
    • Sonic and the Secret Rings: Pirate Storm or Elevated Ruin

Classic Boss: Egg Viper

Modern Boss: Biolizard

Rival: Jet (both Modern and Classic have battles with the same idea - a straight up race across a stage tailor made for the challenge, rather than a fight)

Modern Era:

  • Sonic Unleashed: My bias is showing, but Savannah Citadel (though I will say the only reason I don't pick Dragon Road is cause I'm picking Sky Road / Dragon Dance for Lost World)
  • Sonic Colors: Aquarium Park or Starlight Carnival (I'm still disappointed they picked the least interesting stage from Colors in Generations)
  • Sonic Lost World: Sky Road / Dragon Dance
  • Sonic Forces: Luminous Forest
  • Sonic Frontiers: A little tricky, because of the differences in gameplay style. Cyberspace is such a nebulous concept in the game that it's not a good "stage" pick. Imo the best possible Frontiers stage is a very long boss only stage where the entire stage is the Colossus Climb to the top of one of Frontiers' bosses - like, several minutes of scaling a huge version of Gigantos.
  • Spinoff:
    • Mania: Mirage Saloon, though let's face it - it's gonna be Studiopolis regardless.

Classic Boss: Egg Nega Wisp

Modern Boss: Zavok (Giant)

Rival: Classic Sonic vs Infinite - a multi-stage boss who summons copies of bosses from across the era. Adds some elements of Heavy Magician.

Also, again, the stages listed wouldn't necessarily be in that order. I like the idea of the Classic & Modern stages being scrambled around and spacing the bosses around, and the Frontiers level that's a big Colossus Climb boss in the form of a level would be the final thing before the final boss.

If one was to do a stage from Frontiers, I think Chaos Island would be the best. Not only does it have a couple of interesting puzzles, it's also got a great variety of locales (the hot spring, the lava flow and pit, the downed Egg Robo, grinding between outlying islands, etc). But the big appeal is that two of the Guardians, SQUID and FORTRESS, make for interesting stage parts themselves, with the midboss battle against KNIGHT/SQUID even being a mini level. Plus, SQUID is the meme Guardian, so it's gotta show up somewhere.

Despite that, SUMO is my favorite Guardian. I actually hated SQUID at first because the first couple of times I encountered it, it was hard to get on, and easy to fall off at the start, basically leading to a miniboss I couldn't actually do a full fight with, that just made it impossible to save every now and then.

Oh, getting the third trip up ASURA was also annoying.

Sonic Chronicles was screwed regardless. Bioware's management didn't care about the game and had it rushed out so they finish the deal selling the company to EA. Once that happened and EA owned Bioware it's unlikely a sequel would have ever come out even without the Penders shit happening.

Does anyone remember, sometime after the first gameplay footage for Frontiers was revealed, there was supposed to be something about following the seagulls to secrets or optimized routes or something. I know I'm not imagining it, but maybe that concept was dropped during development. The map doesn't really need anything else as is.

Today I realized that Sonic actually had a pretty evil laugh before RCS came along.

The ones from 06 are especially funny. Elise is giggling in the background, so it's apparently some sweet heartwarming scene where the two of them are having fun together, and Sonic's just straight up maniacally cackling for some reason.
