[up][up] I mean, Sega are a Japanese company at the end of the day, of course they're gonna prioritize their home turf over a foreign market, even if it was more popular in the foreign market.

Top 5 most sold games on the Switch and Ps 5, if I recall.

However, there has been criticism for the Japanese localization from Japanese fans.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.

What happened with the Japanese localization? Did they mess up the translation for the game?

They changed a lot of the characterizations around, citing as a supposed lack of subtlety in the English version, but in a way which arguably made some of the characters more two dimensional instead.

"Subtlety" apparently equals saying random words that are vaguely related to the situation with ellipses after them, to establish the character is thinking about those words without explaining what their thoughts are.

So new topic, why do you think Sonic has still been going strong despite all the low points in the franchise?

Like it has one of the most devoted and loud fan bases in Gaming for better and for worse.

Good things like Sonic Mania, managing to get Sonic’s movie design changed, all the fanart and fangames ETC

And I think all the bad shit this fanbase has cooked up needs no introduction.

Maybe a better topic would be how Sonic just manages to inspire such a devoted fanbase despite the low points.

Like Sonic Forces legit made me question why I like this franchise. But I’m still here playing the games and watching the cartoons.

I have no idea what power this franchise has over me.[lol]

[up] Sorry, but Omega will always be my favorite Killer Robot Robotic Psychopath.

Not the Sonic one….the Mega Man one who scares the shit out of me.

The one that’s the final culmination of Dr. Wily’s legacy. Got A LOT more done than Metal Sonic ever could. ie murdered (directly or indirectly) 75% of all sapient beings on earth. If it were today’s population, that would be 6 billion people he kills.

On another note, rivals do not have to be antagonists. Friendly Rival exists for a reason.

Shadow’s role as a rival would best be done via sometimes Aloof Ally sometimes Hero Antagonist. Either way, a conflict of ideals between two people with good intentions over Idealism vs Cynicism.

Amy’s perfect nemesis is a being dedicated to “Hate that Transcends Time.” Maybe have Metal Sonic regain his full sapience, develop an omnicidal hate for organics and life itself then get possessed by a primordial “Hate Demon”. Or just have a remnant of The End choose him as its willing vessal to sow death wherever he goes.

Cue Fugue for the Lord of Dark.

[up][up][up] This and Sega haven continously kept releasing content no matter how divisive the series has gotten.

Unlike other non-Nintendo Mascot platformers, Sega never took an extended break with Sonic; there's a new Sonic product every year, so the series never faded from the public zeitgeist compared to say, Crash or Spiro which are being carried by their nostalgic properties.

So for Sonic, its a combination of the series being appealing to children and the nostalgic memories the older fans have towards the series.

Its not different from Pokemon in that regard, which has a similar backing as Sonic...and arguably the same contentious reputation.

Sega demonstrated the value of exploring Sonic early on, and the knowledge of that in combination with the continual novelty of a speed oriented platformer, and and understanding of the potential the series has (both with its gameplay and overall lore) has kept people interested.

[up][up][up]It’s really… not a good look to see someone in a thread for a specific franchise say they like a character and respond by saying a character from a different franchise is the same but just better.

So, now that 2022 is nearly over, how do you think this year has been for Sonic? For me, I'm going to break down each product released for Sonic this year and my thoughts on each product.

Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Origins: I haven't played either of these games yet, but I'm glad that Frontiers is making a positive impact on the franchise at the moment.

Sonic Prime: I'm really enjoying this show so far! I really loved the multi universe aspect of the series and I'm really loving the animation and the action sequences. I also loved the development that Sonic is getting as a character. My only issues with this show so far is that I wished that they developed Sonic's friends from the original universe more so that we would have a good idea about who Sonic's friends are as characters. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the Chaos Council as I found them to be pretty annoying, especially the baby. But, I'm still really looking forward to the second season!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022): I really enjoyed this film! I loved the fact that Tails and Knuckles made their film debut and I really loved how Knuckles was being portrayed, especially with Idris Elba providing his voice. I also loved the fact that this movie is much more faithful to the games than the first movie was and it was great seeing how they took the Master Emerald and did interesting things with that concept. My only gripes with this movie is that the pacing was all over the place and I wished that Tails had a bit more to do in the movie besides fawning over Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW): I'm really loving Surge and Kit as characters and they were probably the most interesting antagonists for this series. Sure, there's the controversy regarding Sonic's characterization in the series, but I honestly believe that the stories are very well written and I can't wait to see more from this series!

Overall, I think that 2022 was a really good year for Sonic the Hedgehog and I hope that SEGA continues to improve on this franchise in the near future.

If anything, I'll say Sonic took a bit of a nosedive not with the licenced products, but with the games. Frontiers is fine, but both Colors Ultimate and Origins weren't the best to show to the gamer crowd, as they weren't perfect.

Many are just recommending fan games to play the original classis rather than Origins. Not a good look for Sonic Team.

Colors Ultimate was released in 2021, although the fact that I had to look it up to make sure doesn't reflect well on it. The gaming side of the franchise has only gotten Frontiers, two Porting Disappointments, and continuous mobile updates this decade. Not a good start to the new '20s. Considering how long dev cycles are nowadays, it'll have to coast on Frontiers' 2023 content and mobile stuff for a few years unless Sega pulls a spinoff game out of nowhere.

Something I will say for Origins is that casual/new fans will are in a better position to enjoy it than the hardcore crowd. Even with its flaws, I'd still sat its fairly good way for newcomers to try the classic titles.

[up] x7

Just noting stuff that scares me is all.

There’s cool elements in Metal’s design. Plenty of them in fact. I just get more unnerved by the guy in splattered gore colored armor who represents what happens if Khorne made a robot. And I enjoy him for it.

Besides, I suggested ideas to make Metal more relevant again along with make him a more Nightmare Fuel character.

Not a bad look at all.

Now to go back to building up and painting that G.U.N. inspired Imperial Guard army.

[up][up][up] This is what kind of annoys me about Sonic as a series; because as opposed to trying and find a balance between its different demographics, it will veer too far in either direction.

We'll either get a casual game that hardcore fans can't enjoy, or a game that only the most die hard of fans can appreciate...and even then, which diehards vary.

I need help with Frontiers.

I'm exploring the second island and am tasked with finding the yellow emerald. I found it, but don't know how to reach it. I saw a video, but I'm not sure where the starting point is.
