Incredibly condescending, but the altered lines themselves aren't too bad. They focus on different aspects than the English version does, and I can respect that.

Except for Eggman blowing off Sage's What Is This Feeling? moment. That's just pointlessly cruel on his part.

People not liking reading between the lines is a pretty common opinion...

It kind of comes with the territory of wanting explicit confirmation regardless of how clear a message is, which is way more common.

They it may be a knock at the writing anyway.

A lot of the changed Japanese lines, especially for Tails, are just him saying proper nouns with ellipses after them. That's not subtext, that's just annoying, it doesn't tell the audience any information except that Tails is thinking about those things.

Quick question, on the first Island, does anybody else keep finding the "hearts" that are supposed to unlock Amy's cutscenes, but the required number is 0?

Is this because of the difficulty slider or... is that going to change on later island?

In fact I've opened some of the Chaos Emerald spots with 0 keys. The only resource I seem to actually be using are the Portal Gears.

After Windii pointed out, I wish Eitaro Toyoda would have written the translation. She believes he did write the Egg Memos, which explain why they are quite faithful to the English text.

[up][up] The Memory Tokens and Vault Keys aren't consumed, successive conversations and Emerald Vaults just require you to have collected larger amounts of them total. This will become more apparent on the second island, where the totals get a lot higher. Even going out of your way to get Memory Tokens, you'll likely come across some you'll have to come back to later because you don't have enough.

Some of those altered lines radically change the context and content of a scene, and especially alter the characterization of the characters.

Gotta say, not a fan. And yet certain fans will still insist the japanese script is better even though that isn't even the original script.

Whether it's the original script or not doesn't speak of a script's quality at any point. The most important point is how the writing actually goes. Sometimes an edited script can be way better, or sometimes it can be way worse. And anywhere inbetween. It's an irrelevant reason.

Eggman, who has proven to have some standards for a long time now, going from that to suddenly being downright cruel, is a pretty big change and can easily be disheartening to fans. That's actually a good reason why someone may or may not hate the Japanese script. Especially if it fits their personal view of Eggman too. Some do like him being a cruel villain, while others like him being humane. It varies on person to person.

Finished Ares Island. I did like Sonic and Knuckles' vibe. Vitriolic Best Buds, or maybe even closer then that. Not used to the nickname "Knux" being used in game, I don't think it has before? On the topic of characterization, I got all the Egg Memos from the fishing (unless there's more you can only get on the third island?) and I like how Eggman gets to expound on his opinions on Amy, Knuckles, & and what he thinks of them aside from Sonic. It seems like he thinks they have an over-reliance on Sonic that holds them back from what they could fully be capable of. He even sounds nervous of how formidable Tails could be if he had the kind of confidence Sonic does. Which might just be meant to callback to their being counterparts in Adventure 2, but I like to believe it could go that way. I'm interested to see what Tails is like, and hope these characterizations continue into future games.

Wyvern fight was awesome. I'm sure there's complaints out there about the boss fights being too easy, but there's nothing wrong with the developers wanting to go for style over difficulty as a conscious choice.

I know it's too soon to ask, but did SEGA say anything about what their next Sonic game is going to be?

I suspect Sega is looking hard at the feedback and sales numbers to determine how much and which elements of Frontiers are worth followup on with a sequel.

There might be spin-off plans, but outside another modern remaster/port I think the next game is probably another mainline release.

I have a feeling that's the case too. SEGA is notorious for not making sequels to the Sonic the Hedgehog games (with the exceptions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 and Sonic Adventure 2).

In a 6-minute video, Sonic Youtuber Sonicsta discusses Amy's characterization in Frontiers and what it might mean for her future development, with potential for her to be more independent as a hero. Also warning for spoilers starting at 1:15.

On that note, I sincerely hope Frontiers' whole "we the supporting characters are going to forge out and have our own adventures" actually leads someplace, rather than just being another excuse to have Sonic alone again - which would be an unfortunate step backward for a game that otherwise did some good steps forward.

It's be a weird move to go all "Amy, Tails and Knuckles are leaving Sonic's shadow to do their own things!" if they only go out and do their own things offscreen. Give them - like - DLC or something.

A solid number of these fans don't won't get that, which is what @ultimatepheer was emphasizing. Most Anime scripts are geared towards Japanese audiences first, everyone else comes second. This subset of non-Japanese Sonic fans by now have convinced themselves that immersing into the Japanese script is the only valid experience to enjoying the franchise's latest drop. That even extends to whatever element is rooted to game precedent, like game cast over comic cast appearances or shonen over anything for example. It's why Pariah's latest video take on the franchise is what it was.

Sonic fans think by virtue of Sega of Japan that Ian's script is inferior to the translation and they're not above voicing that especially if the Japanese script would've came first.

Anyway, was Eggman always particularly cruel in the Japanese scripts? I know he had his cruel US moments(though that's like two cartoons, really. He kind of did that once in a while in Sonic X in the dub. I can't speak for the subs. But for the most part, he was quite humane). I remember at least one moment during Sonic Adventure 2's subs in that he didn't look at Sonic as a true rival when he was (apparently) dead during the Hero/Dark story, but he just pretended for a moment and then laughed in Japanese scripts, not really caring at all. I don't know if he's pretty similar in the rest of the JP scripts besides Frontiers as noted earlier.

[up]Comics!Eggman has always been cruel. IDW's is cruel, Fleetway's was cruel, Archie's was crueler than crueler. He pushed Dr.Light out a moving plane, that's how cruel he was.

Speaking of Ian Flynn, what is people's issue with him and his writing? Feels like every now and then I hear his writing being talked about in a negative light. The main thing is references but other than that, I'm starting to notice he's not exactly that appreciated.
